Benchmarks are hard to live up to. The new standard for a May blockbuster--and in many respects, *any* kind of blockbuster--was birthed last year whenMarvel's The Avengers broke a litany of box office barriers. 2013's lucrative summer season is approaching with an industry and its fans skeptical that this May can't measure up to last year's performance.

They're wrong.

Before we begin to tell you why, keep one thing in mind: quality is ultimately king. If audiences aren't happy with the product they're given, they won't keep showing up after big opening weekends. They'll opt to catch up on Redbox titles and Netflix queues, or simply forego movies completely to enjoy the seasonal air. Exhibitors are acutely aware of that fact because it's a bigger disadvantage for them than it is for the studios. Last May, post-Avengers, was also a prime example of that stark reality.

So, let's revise the original wording: this year's market *can* measure up. The next question is "will it?"

I agree Shawn.. May 2013 will beat 2012

It'll probably be the only month 2013 will manage to gross more than 2012.

May 2012 was weak sans TA. IM3 and F6 should be enough to make the difference. STiD over MiB3, then you got TH3 and Epic for the kill.

Unless Cameron offers SMELL-O-VISION with AVATAR 2, It's not doing more than 400M Plus ..  And YES, I'll bet AVATAR 2 doesn't do more than at best 425M Domestic ... You need to check into rehab if you think TA2 isn't going to make a dent in AVATAR 2's box office

I'll be honest with you, I see Avatar 2 doing half of what the first did. Seriously, I think these sequels will start off below $400M and then just drop further.
