Will Chennai Express make a 300 crore? :o

300 crore will be achieved this weekend itself.

Domestically, it will be at 166-167 crore nett which eqautes to 230 crore gross. Overseas, it will be at approx 80 crore. So the total will be 310 crore.

Chennai Express has a decent shot at 200 crore nett in India.

Its first week was 145 crore.

Second week looks to be in 32-35 crore range.

With 60% drops from here, it will cross 200 crore. In any case, it is locked to beat ETT for the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time.

'3 Idiots' grossed 205 crore nett. If Chennai Express holds well, it may challenge that. (Sources that are claiming 150 crore+ week right now will somehow inflate the numbers to push it over 3 Idiots, so don't believe them).

In any case Chennai Express has no chance to beat '3 Idiots' in terms of gross. Taxes were higher 4 years ago, so 205 crore nett of 3 Idiots equates to around 300 crore gross. Chennai Express will need around 220 crore nett to beat that.

So will Dhoom 3 have a chance to outgross CE?

So will Dhoom 3 have a chance to outgross CE?

Dhoom 3 is almost a lock to outgross CE and even '3 Idiots'. It might be the first ever 250-crore grosser or maybe even 300-crore grosser!

'Krrish 3' should also be able to beat CE.

CE has been performing way way beyond anyone expected. Most thought it would get to 150Cr max in lifetime collections. Just shows that a huge star, an entertaining movie and the right release date can go a long way.

Dhoom 3 will probably beat CE, but I have my doubts about Krrish 3 doing it.

Again, the list given above probably does not reflect things accurately, but it is a good guide to have.

To this day, I can't believe how huge Gadar was, especially when the only thing anyone remembers from that movie is Sunny Deol and a hand-pump. (action starts at 3:00)

Thanks, I found this article on BOI.com about biggest blockbusters of all-time in India.

1. SHOLAY (1975) - Simply the most watched and loved film of Hindi cinema by a distance. Dominated theatres for 25 years with umpteen re-runs. Business in re-runs was on many occasions higher than newly released films of the time.

2. Mughal E Azam (1960) - Smashed all records when first released and the amazing re- run with its colour version (2004) gives it number two position.

3. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)/Gadar Ek Prem Katha (2001) - Tough to split the two, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun basically changed film business while Gadar is the most watched film of the modern era (post Hum Aapke Hain Kaun) . Basically these films are the biggest blockbusters of the modern era.

5. Mother India (1957) - The first film to smash records by a margin. Business is similar to Mughal E Azam but impact of that film in 2004 re-run gives it edge.

6. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)/Three Idiots (2009) - Tough to split the two, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was a huge follow up a year after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and a 15 year (still going) run at one cinema in Mumbai. Three Idiots was the first true mega blockbuster since business became dominated by multiplexes. Another similarity between the two is that though they were the second biggest hits of their respective decades they were liked more by the classes than Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Gadar so therefore have a better media perception than those legendary box office blockbusters.

Great list, I've seen all of them except Mother India.  :D

Thanks but Gadar is a lot lower in their list compared BOI.com.

Edit:Their gross total is only 94.25 crores compared to 130 crores for BOI. I'm wondering why the big difference? Also, they don't have any movies before 1970's on their adjusted list.
