Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

How can there be 2 formulas. I wish rentrak start reporting numbers in india.

Boxofficeindia is not a trustworthy source.

Actually Rentrak has started collecting data and reporting in India.

Gross: Nett + Entertainment Tax

Entertainment tax varies from state to state (generally 25 to 30% of the total ticket cost is Entertainment tax)

Amazing this wont come close to FF7 total. Who would have thought that few months ago?

+1

Screen count was huge for FF7. 2300 screen count is unusually high for a hollywood movie in India. AOU seems to be in about half the number of screens.

But even with half of FF7's screen count, the first day collections seem to be about 90% of FF7's first day collections. So, AOU is doing phenomenally well given the screen count.

There are totally 11 film industries in India representing 11 different languages.Hollywood films get dub only into 3 languages Hindi,Telugu,Tamil (only in single screens).Majority of multiplexes will screen in English only.

Hindi means bollywood, always reports collections in nett share.

Telugu means tollywood, always reports collections in share or distributor share.

Tamil means kollywood, always report gross

Gross, Nett share or Net collections and Share or Distributor share are same every across the world.

Gross means number of tickets sold * ticket price.

Nett share = Gross - Entertainment Tax from government

This taxes vary from state to state and also depends on whether they are straight release or dubbed. For example Kollywood or Tamil cinema is tax free most of the times for their filmsand dubbed/other language films whether be it Hindi or Telugu or English has to pay a 30% of entertainment tax.Tollywood or Telugu cinema charges 12.5% entertainment taxes for their films  and dubbed/other language films whether be it Hindi or Tamil or English has to pay a 20% of entertainment tax.Uttar pradesh charges highest entertainment tax @60% for all the films.West Bengal charges entertainment tax of 30% for all the films. It goes on like this from state to state.

So,you cannot roughly deduct 10% or 20% or 30% or like that to get nett share from gross in India.

So,never ever bother about nett share, they are mostly inaccurate, only go for gross for the films especially releasing all over India.

Distributor share or share = Nett tax - theatre rentals

Nett share is left in the hands of a theatre owners. They reduce their rentals and give the amount to the distributors when released via a distributor/studio or to the producer when he released himself.

Theatre rentals are also charged in n number of ways varying from multiplex to single screens and state to state.

That guy Taran Adarsh doesnot even mention whether it is gross or nett share many times like above tweet in the post

Avengers AOU  is doing outstanding at boxoffice and will definitely do atleast 18million usd  in India

Bollywood box office is bleeding big time this year.

There have been 2 clean hits (Badlapur and Dum Laga Ke Haisha), and 2 semi-hits (NH10 and Baby)

Bollywood desperately needs a big hit, FF7 and now AoU are out grossing the top bollywood films of the year.

Next 5 weeks look pretty good in terms of potential

- Gabbar is back should get the OD and OW record for 2015

- Piku and Kuch Kuch Locha Hai will cater separately to Multiplexes and single screens

- Bombay Velvet can be big and get the 2015 OW record

- Welcome to Karachi looks like a mass entertainer

- Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a movie I am really looking forward to (loved the first part)

Then a 2-3 week break before "Dil Dhadakne Do"
