Good Egyptian Movies

Recommended Posts

What are some good Egyptian movies about ancient Egypt and the pyramids.

Do you mean made by an Egyptian film maker / studio?

Than I'd look into the histiry of this film festival (out of my dates for... thread):

37th Cairo International Film Festival aka CIFF November? Cairo, Egypt (Golden Pyramid)

It is the only international competitive feature film festival recognized by the FIAPF in the Arab world and Africa, as well as the oldest in this category.

Or did you mean in general?

= all release years, as in out of the beginning of film making too? There are some probably forgotten by the GA films that got restored in high quality that might present a unique for today ways to present the antique Egyptian way of life you might find interesting.

I think I could dig up an ~ hour long (+/-) documentary about the restauration of one of those movies, if you are interested in that too, including a link to the restaurators who sell it themselfs for reasons explained in said documetary

Is it more to see how e.g. the pyramids did change via the times of tourism... or via non-documatary movies?

That is the movie I meant with the restauration

Ernst Lubitsch' Das Weib des Pharao (Th Loves of...), a silent movie:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013741/

They had quite some worl to do to get the even then censored parts together...

Most famous probably. It was even filmed partly in Egypt

Cleopatra (1963)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056937/

Some other Cleopatra version exist also

Land of the Pharaohs (1955) by Howard Hawks was filmed also at least in part in Egypt. If I remember it right it had one of the biggest casts ever

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048283/

A film here was called Sinuhe .... I can remember too, but I think it had another English title, was also out of that time period.

The Ten Commandments (1956)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049833/

There are also other movies with the same theme / title, but those I haven't seen. Guessing they involve/show too at least parts of ancient Egyptian cultre

Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1528100/

A TV-movie out of the 'Bible' series I only know about as a few actors I like played in it:

Joseph (1995)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113483/

How far you want to call them good movies about Egyptian movies I do not know as they are not that accurate, some rather cliche ladden IMHO.

Building the Great Pyramid (BBC) might interest you as it is a documentary about... building the Pyramids (see title)

Ridiculously there's aren't many that deal with Ancient Egypt and most that do deal with either Cleopatra, Moses or Mummies.  Of those Ten Commandments (1956) and Cleopatra (1963) or the 1930's Claudette Colbert one are probably the best

Of those that don't deal with Cleo, Moses or Mummies -  The Egyptian and  Land of the Pharaohs from the 1950s

If it's historical accuracy you're looking for I'd also recommend documentaries.

Edit: I see Terrestrial named most of the same movies -The Egyptian is the English title of Sinuhe.  Michael Curtiz directed.
