Indeed. Its performance helped elevate 2014 to be one of the biggest years in a long time, but the fact that it represented almost 30% of the Imported Films earnings over the year is troubling.

Imported Films (mostly Hollywood) have been really struggling in Japan (since 2006), with 2012 and 2013 being their worst years ever at the modern day box-office. Even with Frozen, Imported Films still had their 4th weakest year since 2000 (ahead of 2011, 2012, 2013).

Here are some comparison lists to see how 2014 stacked up against every year since 2000 (with the top overall year below each list):

Frozen market share:

12,54% in admissions

12,36% in gross

Without this performance probably there would be a decrease.

Yeah. Let's say Frozen "only" made 12b yen, which would still be the #1 movie of 2014 by far. Then there would be a decrease in gross.

Wow, BH6 already has over an 11x multiplier which would put it third best of last year and has a very good of making more $ than any movie last year not named Frozen.

Only Star Wars VII and Cinderella could beat it this year I think.

I don't see SW7 doing anywhere near what SW3 did in Japan.

btw we were talking abt Japan in the POTC5 thread & whether it may drop from POTC 4 considerably

any thoughts??

loI Im aware its way 2 early to talk about a 2017 movie :D

~Will Big Hero 6 reach $80 million?  The $20 million needed to reach this milestone is quite a wearisome number but seeing as it is holding quite well, it seems possible.  I'll keep my prediction at $75 million and hope it reaches beyond $80 million, better to underestimate than to be disappointed.

~Yo-Kai won't be doing huge numbers anymore and will have an adversarial time passing $65 million if it keeps this up, leaving room for more great Big Hero 6 and Annie performance.

~ Annie... I did not particular have a penchant for this film but nonetheless, Japanese people seem to love musicals so it could probably do $10 million or more.

Let's not forget that BH6 and YKW made between them almost 8.4b in 2014 which was a massive boost at the end of the year. It wasn't all just Frozen. BH6 will probably be the biggest movie of 2015, but only technically, unless nothing makes more than about 4.5b for the rest of the year.

10 (--) ¥30 million ($260,000), 0, ¥30 million ($260,000), Midnight Restaurant (Toei) NEW

>Big Hero 6 will win its 5th-consecutive weekend, and likely hit ¥7.5 billion ($64 million) on Sunday.

>Joker Game and Exodus: Gods and Kings will be competing for 2nd place, but it should go to Joker Game. Exodus had a pretty low Friday take, and its ticket sales so far today aren't suggesting it'll reach ¥200 million. Hopefully both films can manage a debut above the mark, though.

>Maestro! isn't looking too good and might even miss the Top 5... which would be quite disappointing. Maybe it'll turn out to be more of an afternoon/evening film.

>Arpeggio of Blue Steel is only playing on 31 screens, but these anime films generally have a fanbase strong enough to push them in the Top 10 anyway.

>And finally, Midnight Restaurant may not debut in the Top 10, but it should only require about ¥30 million to do it... If it doesn't, then Ressha Sentai ToQger vs. Kyoryuger: The Movie will enjoy a third week in the Top 10.

However, with Sunday being the 1st (40% of tickets nationwide), a lot could still happen over the weekend. I'm thinking Maestro! in particular will outpace its Saturday by a wide margin and potentially come in higher.
