So you agree it's a political movie. As did the other people in my screening.

Naturally.  So you hated it and everyone else did too.  Got it.

Has anyone been following the title controversy? This is hilarious!

Thread title should be changed to "The film formerly known as The Butler"

I can't figure out what WB is playing at by pursuing it. Like anyone was going to mix up some silent film (but not even a whole film, a short!) from 1916 with 2013 Oscar bait starring Oprah? Secretly I'm sure Uncle Harvey loves the free publicity and being able to paint himself as the victim for once.

Why now, though? I mean, it's not like Weinstein is new to the game, his antics have been notorious for years and he's gotten on many people's nerves. It's like WB just saw an opportunity and ran with it.

What a joke.  Aren't there a ton of films that have the same name?  Why should this one have to change?

I was about to say they're probably jealous because they can't create films that sweep Oscars but they had Argo, lol.

The MPAA has an official Title Registration Bureau and the major studios work with it. Supposedly when all those other movies before had shared titles (like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Crash and Notorious and on and on), the studios had made behind the scenes deals and negotiated things in exchange for the favor of allowing the "newer" movie to have the same title as the older one.  In this case it seems The Weinstein Company and WB didn't come to an agreement first and WB is really pressing the point. But even Hollywood insiders seem to think this is a petty BS move on WB's part.

I can't help but to view this film as a condescending satire of black history in general. Then again I'm the one guy who views Forest Gump as a cynical allegory about democracy.

Now some I can understand-like Bad Company was originally titled Black Sheep but of course there was a Chris Farley film with that title.

One that was confusing was "Man of the House" When people saw the title quite a few thought it was the film from 1995.

Who were Henry the VIII and the Duke of Earl? Unsure-but they must of been great to have songs about them.

It's simple: WB wants financial and/or business concessions in return for allowing TWC to use the title. Weinstein's lawyer pointed that out in the lawsuit they filed.

Have you seen the film, or are you making that assumption based on what you've read about it?

WB's lost Nolan's Batman and Harry Potter. Tolkien saga will be over in a year and a half. Man of Steel is very successful, but not exactly leggy.

Eh, maybe it's not that surprising WB is trying to squeeze some cash out of this.

You didn't know that WB owned the rights to the name "The Butler" :P

Update: Weinstein went on CBS This Morning (along with assorted lawyers and a senator part of MPAA) and got interviewed by Gayle King, you know, Oprah's BFF who's one of the regular anchors, to talk about the dispute. Uncle Harvey says WB told him they would drop the claim for the title if TWC gives WB rights to The Hobbit, which WB denies, while accusing him of playing the publicity game like he always does.

I would've suggested this would perform on a really low level like limited films Fruitvale Station, Way Way Back etc.But I noticed its going wide.
