The first quarter of 2013 has come to a close, and March is projected to have rung up an estimated $826 million at the box office (official number to be updated Monday evening). That figure represents a noticeable 34 percent increase over February's dismal $616.4 million haul. Year-to-year, March was down 12.3 percent from 2012's record $942.4 million haul for the month.

The good news is that last month saw several films deliver where they needed to. Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful led the charge with a strong $198.3 million in its first four weeks of release, followed by The Croods with $88.6 million after two weekends in release. G.I. Joe: Retaliation certainly contributed to March's bottom line thanks to its estimated first four-day tally of $51.7 million coming at the tail end of the month. And of course, FilmDistrict's sleeper hitOlympus Has Fallen shouldn't be forgotten either as it has banked $54.7 million so far.

The lack of appealing movies is the big reason for the drop in comparison with last year.

The 2nd least attended 1st quarter in the new century? Yikes.

Hopefully this trend is bucked come Summer.

Given that line up, and no THG-like flow over, we're in for a pretty dismal April.

The lack of appealing movies is the big reason for the drop in comparison with last year.

And the lack of direct big-name action competition is a big reason why GIJoe opened so well overseas.

For a similar reason, I expect Oblivion to open quite nicely too. It's the first big-budget-looking sci-fi movie of the year.

Not too bad. March wasn't doldrums like January and February. April looks dull, but I think 42 and P&G can surprise, Oblivion is whatever. I do think summer will really turn up. May-August looks great and should at least propel back in 2012's range. We obviously couldn't beat March 12 because of THG, 21JS, and Lorax, but I think summer 13 can still pull it out over summer 12 even with TA and TDKR.
