It’s a 3-day and 5-day record for Illumination, beating Minions’ $115.7M 3-day and Despicable Me 2‘s 5-day of $143M. Among Easter 3-day openers, it’s third behind Batman v. Superman ($181M) and Furious 7 ($161.2M). https://deadline.com/2023/04/box-office-super-mario-bros-movie-air-amazon-ben-affleck-1235318951/ Truly lol at how big this thing is
  2. I noticed that Friday evening currently looks like a ghost town for Suicide Squad around the Seattle area: one of the big AMCs currently has 55 tickets sold for Dolby at 7:00, 19 for IMAX 8:00, and only 11 for a standard 7:30 show.
  3. How To Train Your Dragon 3 opened during Lego Movie 2's third weekend. Sonic's biggest competition for families is Call of the Wild, a movie that'll be lucky to make high teens for its OW.
  4. Variety is saying $9M for Parasite: https://variety.com/2020/film/news/box-office-sonic-the-hedgehog-jim-carrey-photograph-fantasy-island-1203504286/ (at the bottom) Sure hope that holds because it'd be a tremendous number.
  5. Just stopping by to say Bong Joon-Ho winning Best Director is probably the best moment I've ever seen at the Oscars, and what a phenomenal speech on top of that.

  7. Ooof. I know these are trying times for the Star Wars brand but there's more likely to be a shock $600M grosser next year than none for the whole decade.
  8. Doctor Sleep is similarly looking pretty dead here in Seattle, and I would thought this would be a place for it would do well. Starting to think it'll struggle to hit $20M for the weekend.
  9. So this is kind of wild. Anyone who used BOM in the last decade probably remembers the Sean Salsbury; it turns he has a blog that he linked in a Variety article about this BOM redesign: https://www.seancast.com/movies/boxofficemojo-redesign-2019/
