February was quite uneventful but at least this led to some nice legs for most of the releases. However, March is starting with a bang, thanks to Dune: Part Two and we have at least 2 other films that should do decent bussiness till the end of the month. Dune: Part Two had a great opening more than tripling the OW of the first when we include the previews as well. Most probably, it won't have the same 5x multiplier but a multiplier in the 4x range is not impossible given the barren state in the upcoming weeks. For now, I'd put the final range as 100k-125k admissions but let's see how it holds in it's second weekend. All of the February releases pretty much bombed - only 1 of them has passed the 20k admissions as of this moment (Argylle), 1 local movie should pass the mark next week and Madame Webb will likely pass it as well in the next few weeks. Overall, a terrible month but an expected one since there wasn't anything that interesting in theaters anyway. Thanks to the slow month, all of the December and January hits managed some incredible holds in the last month which helped a lot with their totals. Wonka just spent it's 12th week in the top 10 with another increase and will pass the 75k admissions mark. If it doesn't disappear when Kung Fu Panda 4 releases on the 15th it has a shot at 80k admissions as well which was totally unexpected after it's OW. It should manage a total of nearly 8x which is amazing even for a release that opened just before the holidays. Migration managed to pass the 60k admissions mark and should end up with a similar final total as Across the Spider-Verse. Overall, a decent performance but it should have aimed for more given the great release schedule. The Beekeeper will pas the 60k admissions mark as well in the coming days. A great performance and another proof that Statham is a star around these parts of the world. Anyone But You got the best of Valentine's Day and will manage to pass the 50k admissions mark by next week. A truly amazing performance with a final multiplier near 7x. Finally, Poor Things will pass the 30k admissions mark in the next few weeks. A great performance for an arthouse film. Next week will see the releases of the second part of the latest French adaptation of The Three Musketeers, Imaginary and The Zone of Interest (only in handful of cinemas). Outside of Imaginary, none of them has any chance to pass the 5k admissions mark so Dune will continue it's reign.

The first weekend of the year where the top 10 didn't manage to pass 30k admissions so the lack of interesting options finally caught up. I don't see anything remarkable happening in February outside of Madame Web and the Bob Marley: One Love doing decent but not spectacular numbers. There are also a few local movies that open in the next few weeks so hopefully at least one of them attracts some of the audience. Otherwise, we're waiting for Dune: Part Two to spice things up. Argylle took the first place with a so-so opening. It didn't even manage to pass the 10k admissions so a total north of 30k admissions will depend on the legs. For the moment I'm sceptical about it's chances but let's see how it holds next week. The Beekeper had it's first noticeable drop. Neverthelss, a total above 50k admissions is a given but 60k admissions seems too hard now. Anyone But You is still holding remarkably well and 40k admissions are now guaranteed. Based on it's hold around Valentine's Day we may see it even pass the 50k admissions mark. Poor Things is going strong and it's already passed the 20k admissions mark. It remains to be seen if it'll have enough statying power to pass 30k admissions as well. Wonka and Migration continue to thrive even with a new children's movie taking some of the audience this weekend. There is another low-tier animation opening next week but Wonka still seems likely to finish near 70k admissions and Migration around 60k admissions. Miller's Girl had an OK hold in it's second weekend and should pass the 10k admissions mark. Given the expectations it's a decent performance. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom finally collapsed this weekend. However, it's now over 100k admissions and in the next few days will pass Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to reach the 6th place in admissions for 2023. A respectable performance given the circumstances and the top comic-book movie of 2023 in the market - and by a significant margin. Fast Charlie debuted outside of the top 10 with a terrible opening just above 1k admissions. It'll probably end up below 5k admissions which is quite unfortunate since it seems like a decent film. This weekend will see the releases of Anatomy of a Fall, the re-release of Dune: Part One, a low-tier animated movie and a local movie. The Palme d'Or winner will probably open around the 1k admissions mark, the re-release of Dune should end up below the 5k admissions mark so one of the other 2 should take the weekend since Argylle placed the bar quite low.
  3. With this premise they'll always limit the overseas audience but it would be a totally different film if it was set up somewhere else. And being America-focused doesn't alway mean that it'll bomb outside of the USA. I mean, American Sniper grossed nearly 200M overseas and it screams USA. It also ended around the 30k admissions mark here - a total I believe is possible for Civil War if the audience doesn't reject it as a whole.

The Beekeper expectedly keeps the first place for the third weekend in a row with another great hold. It's now only 1k admissions below the total (by the third week) of Statham's last January opening - Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, but with a lot better third weekend than it. Unless it suddenly collapses, it should at least match that film's final total of 57k admissions so 60k admissions is now a real possibility. Anyone But You had another great hold and it now makes 40k admissions almost a given. Based on it's hold until Valentine's Day we may see it even pass the 50k admissions mark. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with an exceptional hold and is back in the top 3. It should pass the 100k admissions mark comfortably and land somewhere around 110k admissions. A respectable performance given the circumstances and the top comic-book movie of 2023 in the market - and by a significant margin. Poor Things held great in it's sophomore frame (despite the large number of previews and already burned demad). A total above 20k admissions is a lock and if it can keep holding this well we may start talking about 30k admissions. Miller's Girl had a pretty respectable opening when compared to the disastrous one in it's home market. A total above 10k admissions is likely which is OK for this type of film and the lack of any marketing. Ferrari again with the worst drop in the top 10 and now the 50k admissions mark seems like a mirage. Still, a total above 40k admissions is quite good. Wonka and Migration thrive with no competition on the children's front. There are few low-tier animations opening in February which may cut into their late legs but Wonka still seems likely to finish near 70k admissions and Migration around 60k admissions. Outside of the top 10, Oppenheimer had a re-release and through it managed to pass Fast X for the second place in admissions for 2023. Now Barbenheimer holds the top 2 spots and having 2 non-franchise entries at the top hasn't happened since 2010 so this is quite remarkable. This weekend will see the releases of Argylle, Fast Charlie (a new Pierce Brosnan film with shockingly great reviews) and a low-tier animated movie. Argylle should comfortably win the weekend and end Statham's reign with an opening north of 10k admissions. The ex-Bond should be able to pass the 5k admissions while the low-tier animation will probably end up below the mark. Hopefully, the holdovers will see great holds again to continue the good trend this year.
  5. As I promised earlier this month, I'll share my predictions for 2024. A short recap of how I fared in 2023 - I'm flagging in green the ones that I had in the correct admissions range and in red the ones that couldn't pass the previous range or got over the next range (a really bad prediction). The rest I'll count as passable but not that great: 200k Admissions Possibilities: 1 out of 3 Fast X - ended at 203k admissions The Super Mario Bros. Movie - ended at 130k admissions Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - it should end up around 108k admissions 100k Admissions Possibilities: 1 out of 14; 4 out of 14 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - ended up at 58k admissions The Little Mermaid - ended up at 72k admissions Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - ended up at 38k admissions The Flash - ended up at 20k admissions Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - ended up at 102k admissions Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - ended up at 65k admissions The Marvels - ended up at 20k admissions The Meg 2: The Trench - ended up at 82k admissions Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - ended up at 60k admissions PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie - ended up at 88k admissions Dune: Part Two - moved to 2024 The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - should end up around 76k admissions Trolls 3 - ended up at 46k admissions Migration - should end up around 60k admissions 50k Admissions Possibilities: 6 out of 21; 8 out of 21 Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre - ended up at 57k admissions but had already opened when I did the predictions Plane - ended up at 22k admissions Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - ended up at 35k admissions Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - ended up at 38k admissions 65 - ended up at 10k admissions Shazam! Fury of the Gods - ended up at 18k admissions John Wick: Chapter 4 - ended up at 61k admissions Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - ended up at 62k admissions Elemental - ended up at 77k admissions Barbie - ended up at 212k admissions Oppenheimer - should end up around 204k admissions Gran Turismo - ended up at 37k admissions Blue Beetle - ended up at 18k admissions The Equalizer 3 - ended up at 29k admissions The Nun 2 - ended up at 81k admissions A Haunting in Venice - ended up at 45k admissions The Expendables 4 - ended up at 15k admissions Kraven the Hunter - moved to 2024 The Exorcist: Believer - ended up at 29k admissions Wish - should end up around 54k admissions Wonka - should end up around 70k admissions I'm not happy with the above so I'm going to change the format a bit for this year: 200k+ admissions: Despicable Me 4 - this should be a no-brainer. The last one did 185k admissions, the 2 Minions movies are both around the 250k admissions mark and outside of Harold and the Purple Crayon it has no real competition for 2 full summer months. Unless something blows up like Barbenheimer the only other ones I see with a chance here are Gladiator, Inside Out , Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. If none of them makes it, we may see the first year (outside of COVID) since 2018 without a 200k+ admissions hit. 150-200k admissions: Mufasa: The Lion King - the first one is the 7th most attended film in the last 30 years with nearly 300k admissions. I do expect for this to drop but it should be the main Christmas release together with Sonic so I doubt it'll miss the mark. 100-150k admissions: Dune: Part Two - the first one ended up with 54k admissions during COVID and simulatenous HBO MAX release. I really believe this one will double it since it'll be the first really big film of the year and original had amazing legs. Bad Boys 4 - assuming this one releases on time, it has a high chance to end up here. Both of the last 2 movies ended up around 130k admissions and this one doesn't have any direct competition for a month. Inside Out 2 - the original is the most attended PIXAR film here with around 130k admissions and is highly regarded by most people as one of their best ones. I believe this should surpass the first one and if it wasn't for the yellow guys I'd have put it in the range above but Despicable Me should affect it given the release schedule. Deadpool 3 - this is a bit tricky since the second one dropped quite a bit from the original (130k to 90k admissions) despite the good reception. At the same time, none of the X-Men films went above Deadpool 2. However, this does seem like the biggest MARVEL movie since No Way Home so I expect for it to play more like a major MCU team up and up near the 150k admissions mark or even above. Joker: Folie à Deux - the original was a big hit ending up around 130k admissions. This one adds up Lady Gaga and her last 2 films did amazingly for their genre so expect for this one to be able to not fall that much from the first one and still pass the 100k admissions mark. Gladiator 2 - the original was one of the most attended movies of it's time (over 180k admissions) and Ridley Scott is still quite popular (both of House of Gucci and Napoleon ended up above 80k admissions). I believe this has a chance to even win the year if things turn right. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - the last one ended up around 130k admissions and the first one would also have come near that if it wasn't for COVID. This also has one of the best release dates in the year so it should match the second part. As possible surprise hits here I see Twisters and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Nothing else gives me vibes as a contender. 50-100k admissions: The Beekeper - this one is already in release and will definitely pass the 50k admissions mark Kung Fu Panda 4 - the last two films ended up at 80k and 90k admissions. It really is the only major animated release till Garfield so it should at least match them. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - there shouldn't be much discussion on this since it'll be the only big spectacle film, outside of Dune, until the summer. The Garfield Movie - I believe that the current release date isn't great since it only has 3 weeks before Inside Out 2 comes out. IF is opening the week before and that one will also take away some of it's audience. I'm really baffled why it's not opening in April or August given the barren state of both months. Nevertheless, Garfiled is quite popular and the animation looks cute so it should end up above 50k admissions. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga - a tricky one since Fury Road did pass the mark but it needed pretty strong legs to do so. However, I do believe it'll open bigger than it which should compensate the worse legs and should be able to end up with a higher total. Twisters - this is just a hunch for now but this seems to have great chance to perform really well. It's one of the few movies on the list that are not the 4th+ entry in a franchise and the original is played regularly on TV so I think this may get near the 100k admissions mark. Alien: Romulus - Covenant did end up around 40k admissions but this one has a great release date so I have faith that it'll be able to put the franchise back in the 50-100k admissions range Beetlejuice 2 - this is a long shot without any actual footage but the original is highly regarded so a total north of 50k admissions seems quite possible Venom 3 - the franchise is on a decline but it's still popular enough to prevent an implosion and going below 50k admissions The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim - all of the Middle-Earth films are giant hits here, the last 4 all did over 200k admissions. However, this will be animated so I don't expect for it to match them (at least until I see some actual footage) but for the moment it's safe to say it should at least match Across the Spider-Verse and get into the 50-100k range. As possible surprises here I see Argylle, Ballerina, Borderlands and Smile 2. Also Mickey 17 but I'm not sure when this will release. 30-50k admissions: Ferrari - this one is already in release and will end up in the 40k admissions range Anyone But You - this one is already in release and should end up with at least 40k admissions Argylle - this seems to be the major February release so it's highly unlikely for it to miss the mark Civil War - the trailer is pretty effective and outside of the April releases it seems like the most likely to gain some traction here Challengers - same as for Civil War, the trailer is pretty effective and April's state is quite bad. On top of that, Zendaya is quite popular even here so this has a chance to end up above the 30k admissions mark. The Fall Guy - it looks fun and there must be a few comedy breakouts and for the moment this seems like a likey candidate Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - all of the new films ended up in the 30k range and I don't expect for this to change here IF - the release date is pretty bad but the local distributor does seem to be going all-in on targeting children since this will be dubbed (same as Paddington, Wonka and the Disney Live-Action adaptations) so it should pass the 30k admissions mark Ballerina - I may be overpredicting this one since Atomic Blonde couldn't even pass 20k admissions. However, the John Wick franchise gained a lot of popularity since then and this should have Keanu in it, as far as I know. Therefore, I do believe it should be able to come near the 50k admissions mark. Borderlands - a total guess but the games are popular so this should be able to pass at least 30k admissions Transformers One - if the animation style is appealing this seems like a sure thing Smile 2 - first one was a WOM hit with a 10x multiplier and ended up around 60k admissions. This one has the major horror October release so a total around 50k admissions seems likely As possible additions here I see Bob Marley: One Love, Madame Web, A Quiet Place: Day One, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Kraven the Hunter, The Wild Robot, Saw XI, Smile 2 and Wicked: Part One.

The Beekeper expectedly keeps the first place with a pretty decent hold. It's starting to catch up with Statham's last January opening - Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, and given the lack of competition this upcoming weekend it has a real chance to also end up above the 50k admissions mark. Anyone But You had the best hold in the top 10 so hopefully we'll see a long run, similar to the one in the USA. It's hard to predict this one but for the moment a total above 30k admissions should be guaranteed. Let's see next weekend's hold to see if 50k admissions or more is on the horizon. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with another decent hold. It should pass the 100k admissions mark comfortably and land somewhere around 105k-110k admissions. A respectable performance given the circumstances and the top comic-book movie of 2023 in the market - and by a significant margin. Poor Things had the best debut for a Lanthimos film here and a pretty good one for the type of film it is. When we add up the preview it's already near the 10k admission mark so it should be able to pass 20k admissions at the least. Ferrari seems to be starting to lose ground and had the worst drop in the top 10. If it can stabilize next weekend the 50k admissions mark is still achievable but a lot harder than it seemed last week. Wonka keeps chugging along with another great hold. There are few low-tier animations opening in February which may cut into it's late legs. Nevertheless, a total near 70k admissions is nothing to frown upon. Migration is nearing the end of it's run and should end up around 55k admissions. An decent performance if it wasn't the only major animated movie during the holidays. Night Swim will most probably end up below the 20k admissions mark but the expecations were low, anyway. This weekend will see the releases Miller's Girl, Dogman (the new Luc Besson film) and a Romanian comedy sequel (the first one wasn't released here). I don't see any of them opening above 5k admissions but the Romanian movie looks really stupid so it could surprise us. I believe that The Beekeper should keep the first place unless Anyone But You is nearly flat again.

Above you can find all top 10 weekend charts from December till now. The end of the year was quite less eventfull than the 2-punch combo of Avatar and Puss in Boots. Nothing blew up either to great success or as big bomb but January is quite dead from now on so hopefully we some nice late legs for most releases. I'll do a more thorough review of the most notable releases for 2023 and some predictions for 2024 in the next few days. However, I'll post below my thoughts on the current releases. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom expectedly led the month and should pass 100k admissions in the next few weeks. However, given the barren market and total lack of competition it should have been able to get closer to the first one. Of course, there was much controversy surrounding the film and it's the end of the DCEU so the performance here is not that bad when this is taken into consideration. It will have a better retention rate than Deadpool 2 (another successfull CBM here) and that one didn't have all the bad press. Wonka is doing pretty good and unless it collapses it can even catch up with the first Paddington movie and end up near 80k admissions. Since the start of the holidays it's been holding up exceptionally well so let's see where it'll end up. And this is good news for Dune 2 which I believe will be a big hit, at least here. Migration is the biggest disappointment of the major holiday releases. It'll pass Sing 2, but that was released when COVID was still a thing, to not become the worst performing Illumination release here since Despicable Me 2 blew up and put them on the map here. It was the major animated movie for the holidays and it'll end up far below the 100k admissions mark. It should end up in the 60k-70k admissions range which is not bad but not that great given the circumstances. Other than the big 3 December releases, The Boy and the Heron had a nice run and it'll end up just below 18k admissions. This proves that there is a target audience in the market for such films so hopefully we'll see more major releases this year. As for the 2024 releases, Ferrari is doing quite well and a total north of 50k admissions seems likely. Michael Mann is quite popular here (even Blackhat ended with a total north of 30k admissions) so this isn't that big of a surprise but it's still a good success story to start the year. Night Swim had an OK opening and should end up just below 20k admissions. The Beekeper proves that Jason Statham has a lot of pull in the market. A total north of 50k admissions is possible for this one as well if it has some staying power. Anyone But You had a pretty good opening as well. Let's see if it can pull a run similar to Ticket to Paradise since it seems to be quite leggy in a lot of markets. This will mean 50k admissions for it as well but for now let's stick with 30k admissions based on some decent legs. This weekend will see the release of Poor Things and a local movie. The local movie should bomb and the latest Yorgos Lantimos film will probably end up below 5k admissions. This means that Statham should remain in top for the time being. P.S. All the relevant charts on the first page have been updated.
  8. Unfortunately, Japanese films are either released on festivals or not at all. I only have information for two films from the last few years and the latest One Piece was also released but the BO was never publicly reported. However, The Boy and the Heron is up for a wide release on December 8th but I doubt it'll gross much more than Suzume. Here are all the top charts during that time. In short, the autumn releases were pretty uneventful with a few exceptions I'll go trough down below. Overall, we're nearing the end of the year and the December slate is pretty weak so most probably the top 3 is save. 2023 - Top 20: # Title Admissions # Title Gross 1 Barbie 212 756 1 Fast X 2 801 623 BGN 2 Fast X 203 562 2 Oppenheimer 2 519 883 BGN 3 Oppenheimer 202 492 3 Barbie 2 356 751 BGN 4 Super Mario Bros. A 45 276 20 Hunger Games, The: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes 575 052 BGN PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie is the top autumn performer. It did well but it'll fall below it's predecessor in admissions which is a tad disappointing. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will remain the only animation over 100k admission for the year which doesn't bode well for the genre but the slate wasn't that strong to begin with. It'll fall below the 50k admissions mark which is not good for such a big release. It did have the best November WDAS opening since the pandemic but this doesn't say much. It should have been able to match Moana to be considered a success and unless it develops amazing legs, a total below 50k admissions is expected. It seems that the genre is becoming trendier here so hopefully we'll see more breakouts in the future. The Nun 2 managed to surpass it's predecessor in both admissions and gross which is quite impressive given that the first part was one of the biggest horror hits here so the bar was set quite high. Unfortunately it fell short of both 100k admission and 1M BGN but still a great performance. It had a truly outstanding opening weekend - based on my data, it's the best OW for the genre. The legs were quite bad but it'll still end up with a pretty nice total - around 65k admissions and 750k BGN. Almost all of the other horror films also did quite well given the expectations. Saw X became the top entry in the long-running franchise in both admissions and gross. The Exorcist almost reached 30k admissions and the other two low-key entries also managed to pass the 10k admissions mark. Overall, a really stellar performance for the genre and I expect for Thanksgiving to also land somewhere around 20k admissions - it opens wide this Friday. It had a not so great hold in it's sophomore frame but it should still be able to pass at least 60k admissions and not be the lowest entry here. There isn't that much competition until Christmas so it may stabilize. Of course, it could have done better but it's still a respectable total in this climat - Oppenheimer is the outlier, not the standard. The only pure Sci-Fi autumn release - The Creator, didn't manage to gather that much interest and ended up just below the 30k admissions mark. After it's great OW, the latest Agatha Christie adaptation - A Haunting in Venice, had really bad holds but it managed to get near to the previous entry. Most probably, the OW was quite inflated due to National Cinema Day and the general audience did not have that much interest to see the film on the big screen when normal pricing came to be. It'll end up below the 20k admission mark - a target which was only missed by The Incredible Hulk in 2008 from the whole MCU. The OW was bad and the legs from there are truly horrendous. We have: The Equalizer 3, which got nearer the 30k admissions mark but a bit below its predecessors. After Everything almost the reached the 30k admissions mark but didn't have enough gas in the tank in the end. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 managed to pass the 20k admissions mark. The Expendables 4 landed near 15k admissions mark as the wors performer of the bunch. The upcoming weekend has 1 known entry - Thanksgiving, and a few low-tier releases. This weekend it had some limited previews and nearly passed 1k admissions so I hope it can at least pass the 5k admission mark in it's wide opening. Other than that, Napoleon should rule the BO at least till Wonka releases in the middle of December. As far as I can see it, the possible December successes are: Thanksgiving to pass 30k admissions - a low chance but the genre is in a rising trend. Wonka to pass the 50k admissions mark - the first Paddington did it and there really isn't much competitions so it's possible. Otherwise, passing 30k admissions is sort of a win given the performance of other musicals here. Aquaman to pass the 100k admissions mark - the first one did over 150k admissions so this one should manage at least 100k to be considered a success. Migration to pass the 75k admissions mark - it's the only big animation during the holiday so this is a must. Even Sing 2 did 50k admissions during the pandemic so anything below 75k will be bad. It's still holding exceptionally well (6.56x multiplier till now) and next weekend it should pass the 200k admissions mark - only the 35th movie to do this in the past 25 years. In gross it's even more impressive since it's in the top 15 of all-time. For the year it should be able to pass Fast X for the second place in admissions with a smal chance to pass Barbier as well if it's kept on screens long enough. In gross it should remain in second place unless Aquaman does Endgame type of bussiness. It's already above the 200k admissions mark and it's the top 30 of the past 23 years - it'll end up near Endgame in the end which goes to show how successfull it's been here. In gross it's a bit below Oppenheimer in the all-time charts standing at 17th place. For the year it's in the first place in admissions and should remain on this position since I'm not seeing anything else above the 200k mark, except mayber Aquaman if everyhing works in it's favor. Overall, an astounding performance from both movies that I don't believe anyone could've predicted. Meg 2: The Trench was the biggest August release here. This past weekend it finally passed it's predecessor admissions while it passed it in gross a few weeks before that. It managed to not be overshadowed by the Barbenheimer domination and created a path of it's own. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is the next big August release. It has done pretty well and will end up behind the first Megan Fox movie but far better than the second one. A total above 60k admissions is guaranteed so it should be considered a success here. The battle for the biggest DC Comics bomb of the year has been quite fierce and Blue Beetle is doing it's best not end up as the worst performer here. It needs to be taken into consideration, that on paper this movie never had any chance to come year the other two DC release so the fact it's going to end up near both is quite tragic for the state of the franchise. I still Expect for Aquaman to double the combined totals of all 3 so hopefully DC can end the year on a high note. Unless it totally collapses this upcoming weekend, which I don't expect since there isn't any real competition, it can make a run for the 100k admissions mark which should be a first for a pure horror movie. The long-going action franchise has seen a large drop with the last part but it was famously available on all torrent sites long before the premiere. This one should be opening above 10k admissions to be considered a success. I'm not sure if the previews for PAW Patrol will be reported but I believe there is chance for it to be able to win the weekend with just them. The first movie was released during the pandemic and was able to pass the 100k admissions mark so I feel that this one may explode with something like 30-40k admission for the actual opening next weekend. Otherwise, the holdovers should see decent drops in gross due to the lower ticket prices last weekend. Additionally, yesterday was a National Holiday so we may see better holds all around. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated.

The first part opened around 15k admissions and I have a feeling this one should at least match it. The battle for the top spot will be quite interesting between Barbie, Oppenheimer and the big shark but I believe that Nolan will remain on top with another great hold. P.S. The last month was quite underwhelming at the local box office but thanks to Barbenheimer some much needed life was given to it. We just had one of the most attended weekends as a whole in the last 20 years and both films totally blew all expectations. As I mentioned in my last review of the box office here the general audience will still go to the cinema but they'll do it for an event. The combined attendance of the two openers is the best OW since COVID started moving just ahead the debut of Fast X (without the previews, of course). Almost all of the remaining premiers in the last month debuted well below expectations but I'll get to them in a bit. 2023 - Top 20: # Title Admissions # Title Gross 1 Fast X 203 369 1 Fast X 2 800 407 BGN 2 Super Mario Bros. It remains to be seen how frontloaded the premiere was but due to huge total attendance I expect that there will be a lot of spillover for the next few weeks and it should reach at least a 4x multiplier. If everything goes well it can also reach a 5x multiplier, which is what I would have expected if it didn't open almost 4 times greater than my prediction a few weeks ago. For now, I'll put the final range as 150-200k admissions and 1.8M-2.3M BGN. Oppenheimer had the second most attended debut not on number one - as far as I could see only Sherlock Homes managed to outdo it but that was on Christmas (the most lucrative release season). If we're talking about pure gross it defintely had the best debut not at first place. It also blew every other Nolan OW out of the water - in both attendance and gross. It may be frontloaded due to whole Barbenheimer trend but since it's summer and it's a Nolan movie it has a high chance to go well beyond a 5x multiplier. For now, I'll put the final range as 130-170k admissions and 1.8M-2.3M BGN. It had the worst known debut in the franchise when talking about admissions and it should end up as the second or thirf least attended film in the series. Right now, it's looking at a final total around 60k admissions and 900k BGN - a significant underperfomance but this seems to be the trend for long-running franchises this summer. 13. Yep, but Disney+ is not dubbed or subtitled here and there is no official distributor for Disney when it comes to home media. So the cinema is pretty much the only way to watch the dubbed version of their latest animations. The dubbed pirated versions rarely appear in less than 6 months after the original release. Nevertheless, Turning Red did better than expected. Having such a cute character on the posters definitely helped as well since it started with a pretty good opening.

Last weekend was one of the worst I remember outside of COVID times. Nothing of interest opened and still everything dropped like a rock. It seems that there are a few factors for the disastrous result - the sunny weather, the fact that going to the cinema is now a luxury and of course the main thing here is that nothing took the interest of the general audience. Avatar: The Way of Water proved that people are still open to going to the cinema but they'll only go in droves for an event. From the start of year till now only 3 films got past 100k admissions and only 9 got past 50k admissions. This is really bad for the market and it shows that moviegoind habbits have changed a lot. Even the 2 films on top did worse than expected - Fast X will end up 15k admissions above the previous entry despite it being released during COVID and Super Mario should have gotten at least 150k admissions. 2023 - Top 10: # Title Admissions 1 Fast X 199 561 2 Super Mario Bros. July's lineup is stronger on paper and Indy is yet to come so hopefully the box office picks up. Now to the individual performances. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is doing pretty bad since it'll probably end up as the lowest in attendance in the franchise. It's losing a lot screens now so I don't see how it'll go past 40k admissions. Still, it most probably won't pass 20k admissions which isn't good. Ateroid City bombed but it was expected. At least it's good that these type of movies can get a wide release from time to time. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was doing pretty well until the disastrous weekend we just had. Unless it recovers in spectacular fashion it'll end up around 60k admissions. Nevertheless, it should end up as the second biggest June release since I really don't see a chance for Indy to go below that mark. It was rainy in most of the country during the weekend and it seems this helped the family movies. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had a pretty good opening - it doubled the previous movie in gross and nearly doubled it in admissions as well. Hopefully, it can hold well in the next few weeks despite the upcoming competition. For now, I'd say it reaches around a 4x multiplier so a total around 60k admissions and 800k BGN is the goal. It still has good midweek gains so 200k admissions are still on the horizon but 3M BGN seems like a dream now. It's midweek gains were also quite good with the help of Children's Day on June 1st. It's 2 week multiplier is better than Aladdin's remake so it's holding really well. Assuming it can keep the good holds a final total around 90k admissions and 1M BGN may be on the cards which will be a nice total despite the controversy but still far behind the other 90s remakes. Nothing special is happening with the rest of the top 10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie should fall a bit short from 60k and 130k admissions respectively. The upcoming weekend has 1 new wide entry - Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. It should be able to pass 10k admissions so a new number 1 is pretty much a lock. The franchise is steeply decreasing here after the 4th entry but maybe this one can buck the trend and stabilize a bit. Otherwise, if the weater turns out to be rainy again then the family movies should see some nice holds which should help Across the Spider-Verse and The Little Mermaid. We rarely have big breakouts in June so the next few weeks shouldn't see anything out of this world. Hopefully, The Flash surprises us but if not I don't anything passing 20k admissions in its opening until Indiana Jones at the end of the month. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated.

Fast X had a terrible drop after the great opening. It still achieved the 10th biggest second weekend in gross but a 60% drop here is much worse than in the USA. However, it had a pretty nice weekly gain so the total is alright for now. If it can stabilize in the next few weeks it should still reach 200k admissions but 3M BGN may be missed. In reality the race swap for Ariel definitely played a role here since it should have been opening with at least 30k admissions - the animation is quite popular here, around the same level as the other 90s hits. If it can manage standard legs for the brand, it should reach 70k admissions and 800k BGN which will be a so-so performance. While this was totally expected for the latter, the Robert De Niro movie should have trippled this opening since his movies are always doing pretty good here. No idea why this bombed so hard. Nothing special is happening with the rest of the top 10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie won't be able to catch a break after being destroyed by Fast X so they most likely won't reach 60k and 130k admissions respectively. The upcoming weekend has 2 new wide entries - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Boogeyman. I really hope that Spidey can breakout since the first one was amazing. However, it didn't gross much here so anything above 15k admissions for the second part should be considered pretty good. The Boogeyman has effective trailers so perhaps it can match Evil Dead Rise and opend around 10k admissions. Fast X should manage a third week on top unless it has another bad drop and The Little Mermaid should be above the new horror movie to save some face. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated.

This should lead in final total around 200k admissions and 3M BGN but we'll need to see it's hold next week to have a better perspective. Anyway, I don't see it missing Furious 7 gross so it should beat it and become the highest grosser of the franchise. However, it has no chance to beat it in admissions but it should beat F9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 plummeted in the face of the Fast family. It may stabilize and reach 60k admissions but it'll be hard after such a big drop. It's quite unfortunate since the film has great WOM here. Hypnotic held decently and should end up around 15k admissions. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also had an OK hold and still has a chance to flirt with 130k admissions. Book Club: The Next Chapter had the best drop in the top 10, which was expected since it doesn't share almost any audience with Fast X. Still, it's a terrible performance when compared to the original and should end up below 10k admissions. The rest of the top 10 is pretty much dead so nothing to see there. The upcoming weekend has 3 new wide entries - The Little Mermaind, About My Father and Knights of the Zodiac. The Little Mermaid is a total wild card here - to me it's perfectly reasonable for it to bomb with an opening below 10k admissions or to blow up with at an opening above 30k admissions. The race change for Ariel is a big talking point here so I'm leaning on the bombing side but hopefully my fellow countrymen surprise me and this can get to the usual standards for these useless Live-Action remakes. About My Father should land somewhere in the 5k-10k range and Knights of the Zodiac will most likely bomb below 5k admissions. Fast X should keep the top spot unless The Little Mermaid surprises. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated.

Overall, we saw some nice holds and even increases after the disastrous weekend before. The openers were nothing special but Fast X should make things rather interesting next week. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had a great drop after last week's underperformance. It's already passed Quantumania and unless it collapses in the wake of Fast X it should be able to at least pass Vol. 2 in admissions. It shouldn't have any difficulties in passing both of the previous installments in gross due to the huge inflation. For the moment, I'd say it can reach 70k admissions and 1M BGN but let's see it's hold next week. It should end up around 15k admission since I expect it to collapse in the face of Fast X. The Super Mario Bros. Now it should definetly pass 1.5M BGN and become the highest grossing video-game adaptation here (see charts below). However, due to inflation the gross is the same. The first part opened during the summer so this one should definitely end up with a multiplier much below 7x so it's unlikely for it do much more than 5k admissions. The Pope's Exorcist should end up around 20k admissions. Love Again bombed here as well. It should end up below 5k admissions. Mafia Mamma should end up around 23k admissions. Evil Dead Rise is losing steam so most likely it'll end up a bit below the 30k admissions mark. John Wick 4 is nearing the end of it's run but should be able to reach 82k admissions. The upcoming weekend has two new wide entries - Fast X and Boonie Bears: Back to Earth. F9 opened with just about 50k admissions while COVID restrictions were still on so this should at least match that to be considered a success. However, the previous installment also had little competition so it managed some decent legs. Therefore, this one should open bigger to match it's admissions unless it has incredible WOM. Overall it was far from the best weekend to go to the movies since it was quite sunny and was one of the biggest local holidays. Hopefully, next weekend we'll see some rebounds since it seems to be raining and nothing major opens before Fast X. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuted on top but with a mediocre opening. Including the previews it managed to beat the previous installments in gross but Vol. 2 still has the most attended opening. Unfortunately, even if it has great WOM I doubt it can have a multiplier better than 4x which means around 60k admssions and 1M BGN is the absolute ceiling for it. While the gross end up OK due to inflated ticket prices the admissions number is nothing special. Below you can find charts for the franchise and the MCU as a whole. Movie tumbled as well as the rest of the top 10 (excluding Mafia Mamma). If it rebouds it can get around 120k admissions and 1.4M BGN which will be quite good but below my intitial expectations for it. The Pope's Exorcist should end up around 20k admissions and 225k BGN. Mafia Mamma had the best hold this weekend so it seems to be experiencing amazin WOM. It should definitely pass 20k admissions and 250k BGN. Evil Dead Rise still can reach 30k admissions and 350k BGN if it rebounds a bit. John Wick 4 lost the premium screens again and tumbled as well. However, it should end up around 82k admissions and 1.1M BGN - twice as much as part 3 (in gross). The upcoming weekend has three new wide entries - Hypnotic, Love Again and Book Club: The Next Chapter. It's the calm before the storm since Fast X should be pretty big. If Guardians doesn't hold that well or the new Ben Afflec thriller overperforms we may have a new leader. At the moment, I believe the comic-book movie should keep the top spot with a pretty good drop to compensate the not so great opening. The other two openeners should be below 5k admissions. P.S. Overall we saw some nice holds for the holdovers and both openers underperformed. The Super Mario Bros. Movie keeps holding steady but nothing extraordinary when compared to the worlwide trends. It has finally passed 100k admissions which is a nice achievement and should keep the yearly crown until Fast X opens later this month. It's the only major kids movie until The Little Mermaid so it should have strong holds in the coming weeks and end up around 130k admission and 1.5M BGN. The Pope's Exorcist opened below Evil Dead Rise which I did not expect, to be honest. It should end up somewhere around 15-20k admissions and 200-250k BGN. Evil Dead Rise had an OK drop given the direct competition and should end up over 30k admissions and 350k BGN which will be a nice total for it. Mafia Mamma had an amazing hold and now has a real chance to end up above 20k admissions and 300k BGN. John Wick 4 with the second best hold in the top 10 which is helped a lot by the return to IMAX. It managed to pass 1M BGN and should end up around 82k admissions and 1.1M BGN - twice as much as part 3 (in gross). Murda Boyz (a production from a local rap group) had a disastrous second weekend but this was expected due to fan rush. It should end up around 15k admissions and 200k BGN which is 10 times more of what I expected given the trailer. Beautiful Disaster held OK and should land somewhere around 25k admissions and 275k BGN. Chalga - the latest local sensation, managed an increase this weekend which helped it go above the 100k admissions. This week it lost the yearly crown in gross to Mario and next week the plumber will top it in admissions as well. However, the total is nothing short of amazing so the producers should be quite happy. Suzume held OK and should manage to pass 5k admissions which is quite good for an anime here. The upcoming weekend has two new wide entries - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and Chalice of Blood, The (Verimalja). The next entry in the MCU will defintely end Super Mario's reign at the top of the charts. However, it remains to be seen if it'll manage a descent debut. I expect it to land somewhere in the 20-30k admissions zone, which will be in line with mid-tier MCU films here. The other opener should end up below the 5k admissions mark. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated in the first few posts.
  21. Anime movies rarely have a proper release here so based on the data I have there wasn't a release for any of the above. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero ended up with 3.8k admissions and 40k BGN last year and One Piece Film: Red had a release last December but no official data came up. When it comes to live-action adaptations, Detective Pikachu managed 44k admissions and 420k BGN back in 2019. Alita fared a bit better with 61k admissions and 710k BGN. Otherwise, Pokemon was quite popular in the early 2000s but the movies were only released on DVD/VHS. Yu-Gi-Oh and Beyblade had their share of popularity in the years after but that's pretty much it with the general population. Some of the Studio Ghibli films are also well known (e.g. Spirited Away, Totoro, Princess Mononoke) but again they were released on home media or played on TV.

Overall almost all of the openers overperformed and Mario held pretty well so the weekend ended up on the bright side. The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a pretty good drop after the Easter deflated weekend. It also had another big midweek so it managed to pass 1M BGN and next week it should pass 100k admission as well. It seems to be stabilizing now so I'm hopeful that it can end up around 130k admission and 1.5M BGN. Evil Dead Rise had a great debut for a horror movie and should end up around 25-30k admissions and 300-400k BGN which will be a nice total for it. The first of the two new local movies - Murda Boyz (a production from a local rap group) totally surprised me with passing 5k admissions in its opening. It looks utterly abominable based on the trailer but this rarely matters here so unless it's fully fan-driven it should end up around 15-20k admissions and 300k BGN. Mafia Mamma - the new Toni Collette/Monica Bellucci movie, had a nice opening as well. I see a final total around 15-20k admissions and 300k BGN for it as well. Beautiful Disaster held well and should land somewhere around 25-30k admissions and 300-350k BGN. John Wick 4 had an bad drop given the deflated Easter weekend but had a pretty good midweek. Next week it'll pass 1M BGN and should end up around 80k admissions and 1.1M BGN - twice as much as part 3 (in gross). Suzume is a nice surprise since it's quite niche but managed to pass 2k admissions. It'll still land below 10k admissions but maybe in the next few year the anime genre may have a larger following here. The second new local movie - The Art of Falling Down, opened a bit below my low expectations but it should have better legs and may end up around 10k admissions which is fine for an indie local movie. Dungeons & Dragons is losing a lot of screens but now has a 4x multiplier which is great given the March bloodbath. It should end up just below 40k admissions and 500k BGN. Chalga - the latest local sensation,is now fading out butl should be able to pass the 100k admission mark before it's out of theaters. The upcoming weekend has two new entries - The Pope's Exorcist and a low-tier European animation. Russell Crowe is quite popular here so I expect The Pope's Exorcist to at least match Evil Dead Rise's opening. The other opener should end up around 5k admission or so. Super Mario will need a pretty good drop to hold the top spot unless the Crowe's fans don't show up. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated in the first few posts.

Overall, it was a terrible weekend for moviegoing and this is expected for a sunny weekend on Easter. Hopefully, we'll see some niced holds this upcoming weekend to compensate for the awful drops. The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a somewaht decent hold for a family movie - the rest of the genre practically disapppeared this weekend. It also had a pretty big week, thanks to the Spring Break. However, unless it start holding really well it may not reach my initial prediction of around 125k-150k admissions and 1.5M BGN-1.8M BGN. It's hold in the next few day will give us a better picture where it's heading. Beautiful Disaster had an OK opening. I expect a final total around 15k-20k admissions and 200k-250k BGN. John Wick 4 had an OK drop given the circumstances and it made decent progress during the week. I expect a final total around 80k admissions and 1.1M BGN. Dungeons & Dragons is continuing to show some staying power and is nearing a 4x multiplier. However, it seems to be losing most of its showtimess to the new releases so I don't think it'll have enough gas in the tank to pass 40k admissions and 500k BGN. Chalga - the latest local sensation, had a terrible drop but it lost a ton of showtimes. It still should be able to pass the 100k admission mark before it's out of theaters. Air held OK and should pass 10k admission in the end. Renfield bombed pretty bad which I didn't expect, to be honest. It should land below 10k admissions which is awful for a Nic Cage movie here. Air had an unremarkable opening but it was never expected for it to be anything else. It should land around 10k admissions which is expected for such a movie. The upcoming weekend has five new entries and even if Mario dropped pretty hard I still expect for it to keep the first place. Evil Dead Rise looks to be the top performer and should hopefully pass 5k admissions. The other Hollywood release is Mafia Mamma which should be below 5k admissions, same as the 2 new local movies and Suzume. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated in the first few posts.

Overall, we had two pretty good weekends for the box office. This upcoming weekend is Orthodox Easter so holds during the weekend can be great if the weather is bad but we'll need to wait to see. The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a great opening this weekend but it's a bit below my expectations and in comparison to most of Europe. It was the biggest one for the year and second biggest for an animated movie since the start of the pandemic - only behind Minions 2. However, this week is Spring Break and schools are out so hopefully this results in a bigger than expected total by the end of the holidays. On top of that April is pretty empty so it should have some staying power. Unless it shows some amazing legs, it should land somewhere around 125k-150k admissions and 1.5M BGN - 1.8M BGN which should probably allow it to take the yearly crown as the biggest animation. John Wick 4 had a good offical opening after the week of previews and an OK hold in it's second weekend. It's already the highest grosser of the franchise and after the holidays it should be the most attended one as well. I expect a final total around 80k admissions and 1M BGN. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum 14 039 136 547 лв. 58 571 547 243 лв. John Wick: Chapter 4 17 808 241 326 лв. 52 450 704 203 лв. Chalga - the latest local sensation, has topped 1M BGN in gross and it seems that it should be able to pass 100k admissions as well after the nice holds the last 2 weeks. A remarkable performance for what seems to be a truly terrible film but the local tastes are something else. After the awful opening weekend Dungeons & Dragons is showing some staying power and already reached a 3x multiplier. Based on it's performance during the holidays it may end up around 40k admissions and 500k BGN which will be an OK result after the small debut. Air had an unremarkable opening but it was never expected for it to be anything else. It should land around 10k admissions which is expected for such a movie. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is keeping in line with its terrible performance here. It won't be able to pass 20k admissions which is absolutely atrocious for a big budget Comic-Book movie. Creed III managed to pass 60k admissions and 725k BGN and won't go much higher since it's out of top 10 next week. Scream VI will land around 35k admissions and 400k BGN which is great for the franchise. After leaving the top 10 The Way of Water managed to sneak back in one last time before the end of its run. It has officiallly passed 475k admissions and Avatar's original run. The upcoming weekend has three new entries and we'll definitely not see a new movie on top - probably Super Mario will be on top until Guardans of the Galaxy opens next month. All three openers should land somewhere between 5k-10k admissions. We have Renfield, Beautiful Disaster and a low-tier European animation. Nicolas Cage is quite popular here so at the moment I give the edge to the Dracula movie but Beautiful Disaster seems to be by the same team that is behind the After franchise which is popular here so it has a chance to outgross it. P.S. All the relevant charts have been updated in the first few posts.
  25. To be honest, I believe Avatar as a franchise sort of reached the maximum potential of the market. The two films are the only ones in this millenium to go over 400k admissions and the market isn't really growing in admissions for the last 10 years or so. The population is also decreasing so even if Avatar 3 manages to pass 400k admissions again it'll be a huge success.
