  1. I don't think that's a factor at all...I think we're seeing a Marvel film released during summer vacation for the first time and it's naturally going to be more front-loaded than other releases. Also, moviegoers had a much more steady diet of import films this summer than in previous years...Skyscraper, The Meg, Mamma Mia, Shoplifters all got releases in July.
  2. Anyone have a count on number of revenue sharing films (分账片) that have been imported so far this year?
  3. Asian American tastes and interests are way different than Native Chinese. This film has about as much relevance in China as Mr. Billionaire does in the US.
  4. Skyscraper extended til 9.20 https://www.yugaopian.cn/bbs/topic/22403
  5. Biggest single day gross for an original movie in China, imported or domestic. Biggest single day in any one market for non-sequel, non-remake, non-cinematic universe installment... WOW!
  6. Doubtful...it's scheduled to end right as the blackout period begins.
  7. It’s called Animal World. Nothing to do with Orwell’s book.
  8. Smart move to take advantage of slow weekend and weak slate overall in theaters now...
  9. I, Tonya TBD prob through the Arthouse Alliance http://news.mtime.com/2018/06/05/1581191.html
  10. Star Wars is still in the title, folks. It was just relegated to after the colon this time. Rogue One - 星球大战外传:侠盗一号 Solo - 游侠索罗:星球大战外传
  11. Chances for Sicario 2 release? @Gavin Feng Seeing promotional things up on Mtime...
  12. Violence and profanity aside, the jokes in Deadpool come a mile a minute and are very cultural specific. The bulk of the film would be completely lost in translation. It’s a very smart decision not to release there.
  13. Not to belabor my point (but actually to belabor my point), Variety called it "Knight-Errant" Solo way before "Ranger" was coined by @Gavin Feng http://variety.com/2018/film/news/han-solo-day-and-date-china-theatrical-release-1202798624/ And Patrick Frater is one of the few guys who reports on CBO in English and actually knows Chinese...
  14. The Meg is a co-production. It's considered a domestic film and doesn't count towards the quota.
  15. "Ranger" is only used by the English language internet and is in reference to Gavin's original tweet...not anything official. Douban and Maoyan both use the official English language title, Solo: A Star Wars Story. @POTUS knows me well, already sent :-) I'm a student of the language and culture so I get pissed easily when things are translated poorly and misunderstandings occur. Feel free to ignore it.
  16. Why does it need a translation? Just use its official English name here or just "Solo" It appears that it ricocheted around the internet from a tweet http://www.jedinews.co.uk/film-music-tv/articles/solo-star-wars-story-changes-name-china-ranger-solo/ by none other than our pengyou @Gavin Feng and while I love the guy, I don't think he intended to officially coin its English name, nor does he have the English authority to do so (no offense, Gavin...I really still do love you). I realize this is all an uphill battle and doesn't matter in the big scheme of things, but we're all sitting here criticizing Disney for its title while in actuality the term 游侠 isn't half bad for Solo's character.
  17. Can we collectively stop calling this “Ranger” Solo? How did that even start? The Chinese 游侠 connotes a chivalrous wanderer who defends the weak, a kind of “knight-errant”. It also has the implied meaning of a scoundrel or rascal.
  18. The action/disaster genre starring Dwayne The Rock Johnson? You best believe it.
  19. Maoyan predicting ALOT less. 64.5M Fri (+23%), 100M Sat (+55%), 74M Sun (-26%). 239M total (-81% last weekend). Any chance you’re really overshooting the weekend?
  20. General box office reporting in China contains both 综合 (with fees) and 分账 (without). It’s only in English that reporting failed to understand the changes.
  21. If y’all are gonna get super technical about exchange rates and how it looks in Disney’s books, why not go all the way? The official gross that Disney will eventually report (and should be reported elsewhere) will exclude the ticketing fees that aren’t calculated in their revenue share at all. That means opening weekend was ¥1.19309B = $187.6M.
  22. Not true at all in china. Studios are completely blind and reliant on the same sources we follow here. It took Hollywood and China years to agree on a third party audit and that was essentially a one time thing.
