My weekly exercise in optimism is due: Power Rangers at $1.72M, or 38.9% drop. -
Estimates for Lionsgate's P&A budget for Power Rangers are all over the place, but one was as low as $30M. Considering it only needed to advertise in the US and UK, that's not an entirely unfeasible number. If so, then depending on how US-heavy that number is, Lionsgate's day-of-release negative cost could be as little as $32.5M. In that case, not only is it already profitable, but as of Saturday it has already made a 10% return. LG is probably going to be satisfied with the investment, whether they're able to make a sequel or not.

It's going to be a while. Even if/when China's box office eclipses the US (currently $6.6G vs $10.7G, respectively), that won't change the fact that five of the six major movie studios are American companies. The US is such a cushy place for rich people, especially compared to China, that it's going to be a while before they start catering primarily to the Chinese market.

Based on those weekend estimates, my current projection for Power Rangers' next weekend is $3.72M, which would be a 40.2% drop. I mean, come on, it can't drop 60% every weekend, can it? -
It's worth noting that the Super Sentai movies released in Japan are essentially feature-length episodes of the show. The actors, costumes, and special effects are lifted wholesale from the show, with maybe a handful of extra spectacle due to a slightly higher budget. They're more comparable to Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie than the first movie or the current one.

Ouch at that PR number. I'm now predicting a $5.76M weekend, which is a 59.7% drop, close to the 60.5% real drop of the second weekend. Ouch ouch ouch. In spite of all that, LG's financing strategies mean that they're already making a profit. They covered three-quarters of production and American marketing costs before the movie even released, so to get a (presumably) satisfactory 10% return on investment, the studio only needs to get about $45.5M. If my projection is correct, by the end of the weekend they'll end up with $42.3M plus whatever little they get from the UK. Except the base isn't nearly big enough to pull in $70M+ on its own. It clearly appealed to somebody.
