ITALY (Botteghino): 'Kung Fu Panda 4' stronger than predecessor

Recommended Posts

Weekend: the boxoffice is hurted by summer weather (and lacking of interesting newcomers) for the 2nd week in a row. New opener Mad Max Fury Road gross € 1.004.564 with 137.848 tickets sold, which is sufficent to reach top spot. Seing the daily numbers I think it's lucky if will end at 2,5M. Italian fantasy (and Cannes competitor) Tale of Tales is #2 (but #1 for tickets sold) and Age of Ultron #3. The Disney/Marvel did 498K€ in its 4th weekend for a total of € 15.932.986 and 2.203.270 admissions. It will end around 16,5M€ and 2,25M tickets sold. Comparisons with other installation of Marvel franchise are controversial: AoU is up in admission vs TA but down vs Iron Man 3, while is down in euro vs TA but up vs IM3. So in any case, we can put it "in line with most reasonable expectation" even if, speaking of Disney movies, AoU (as other Marvel blockbusters) is, in term of number of moviegoers, well behind to classic fairytales like Alice (-35%) or Frozen (-30%) and also a no-so-high budget movie like Cinderella (-10%).
FF7 ends its run with a very good € 18.604.117 / 2.683.276 adm, while Run All Night is near to 1M€ after 3 week.

YouTube Italia is now ten years old and shows the all-time top ten of the most viewed italian videos. Two of these coming from cinema: the italian trailer of Fifty Shades of Grey and, obviously, the italian version of Let it Go movie sequence.

Weekend predictions: for the third week in a row the boxoffice seems to be lacking of interesting news, Youth (La Giovinezza), last work of the Oscar winner director Sorrentino, opens day and date with its (successful) Cannes premiere and should win the weekend. The movie shows also a stellar international cast (Caine, Keitel, Weisz, Fonda). Other new competitors are Disney's Tomorrowland and the horror The Lazarus Effect, but both did very bad on Thursday, and I don't think that they can be able to do significantly better in next days.
More interesting things coming from the Home Video market: Frozen is going to spend its 60th consecutive week in top ten for phisical sales. Speaking of DVD only, it has collected 27 weeks at #1 and 48 weeks in top three. These insane numbers are hard to explain only with the success of the movie: most likely are the other titles that sell only in first and maybe in second week of release, and after their sales tend to zero. Other, there was a successful sing-a-long rerelease in November, some strong cross-promotion with local media and discounts in online retailer.

Jurassic World big summer OD: 1M€, 137k ADM and a far better movie than FF7 and Age of Ultron.

I love both Fast and Jurassic, but I don't think that World is going to top FF7

Great OD!

Friday numbers for JW are very impressive: it's June, the weather is hot and yesterday evening over 7M people were watching on tv the European Cup match Croatia-Italy.  Also, it more than double the other 9 movies in top ten combined. Great WOM (over 70% on Twitter cinema tags) and probable long summer legs (see Maleficent last year) put JW in highlight for finally break the 20M or 3M adm milestone which, among the Hollywood blockbusters, is lacking since 2012, even if the average ticket price (7,33€) isn't so good and suggest a very low 3D share (usual ticket price are: 9/10€ 3D - 7/7,5€ 2D - 5/5,5€ children/students/over 65 year old/fidelity card).
