Sunshine, Light, and Joy

This is a post that I've been thinking about for awhile. Recently, I opened up the discussion to other members of the staff to get their feelings on the matter, and their opinions generally matched mine, which is this:

Within the last year or so, there's been a steady increase of negative posts in movie threads. We've always had some heated discussions for some movies, but recently things have not only gotten more histrionic in those threads (generally speaking, the CBM ones), but they've started to spread to other franchises and other movies as well. I'm not talking about out-and-out trolling, I'm talking about members feeling they have to consistently shit on a movie (or studio, or star) simply because they aren't interested in the current project or projects. With every piece of news about a movie, it's now a virtual guarantee that there's a flood of people rushing to say they think it sucks, they don't like the current trailer/tv spot/actor/actress/director/concept. And I get it -- we all have movies we don't like, movies which we think are bad ideas, industry people that just don't appeal to us. But there's a fine line between expressing your opinion about this and doing it so often, with such consistency, that the collective emphasis of all of it basically brings down the entire thread and thus the entire forum.

There's no easy answer to this. We don't want to crush freedom of expression here. But at the same time, the spirit of this forum is for people to have fun talking about the movies they love and the box-office runs they love.

To have fun.

And while it may be fun -- in a sense -- to personally vent about a movie, or to vent at people who dare to enjoy something you don't, it doesn't bring fun to our community. In fact, it generally drags down the overall fun for everyone else. We've had people repeatedly mention to us over the last several months or so that in some cases they don't even bother going into some threads -- even for movies they're curious about! -- because they just don't want to deal with the overall mess those threads contain. And frankly, that matches the personal opinion of most of the staff as well.

So this post is both a request and a warning.

The request: Next time you feel like taking a dump on a movie (or a topic) for the dozenth time, take a moment to consider whether it's really worth it. People probably already have a good idea of what your attitude about the project is. Maybe just put your posting energy into a movie that you enjoy and love or are excited about.

The warning: The staff is going to be taking a closer look at some of these threads and we'll be more active with temp thread-bans if we think it'll help the overall vibe of the forum. I'd rather we don't have to, but it's not going to constrain any of you too much if you aren't allowed to post about a movie you supposedly don't care about anyway.

Remember the words of Bill and Ted: "Be Excellent to Each Other".

They're just movies, guys. It's about having fun.

Damn. This is a big event movie, what is Deadline doing?

Oh well, thank you.

For previews I mean. Generally people are saying 40 give or take for the weekend

Finished watching this movie at IMAX.

Was pretty much disappointed.  Good acting but the story wasn't as good and the first half the movie was boring and slow.  Felt like hour and a half of slow.  Some few good action scenes.  Ridley Scott says he is making a interquel as he called it explaining what happened before Covenant and after Prometheus, I would kill him myself!  At least make the next sequel after Covenant!

Spoiler

Just got back. It really is Prometheus 2. Dumb characters and really bad decision making. One early twist makes you think the movie might be interesting, but it still manages to be dumb.

Eh.

(Non-spoiler very brief four sentence reaction to the movie above)

Saw it. Was excited for it. Expected an Alien movie. Got "Prometheus 2.0" instead.

Most disappointing release of the year so far. Ridley Scott is out of touch with the franchise that he gave a spark of life to. Let it die.

Just got out give this like a 6.5/10 had some great sequences but the whole film just felt really blah to me and left far more questions then it answered. I think it is time for Scott to hand the franchise over to someone else.

critics seem to like it. Top critics rating is 84%.  Interesting there seems to be a divide on this forum and on RT this time

I liked it for the "boring" stuff others don't like.   It's the questions and theories about the engineers I'm into now.   But the studio needs a body count and jump scares so of course that will dominate the run time.   Too bad, I wish they would let Ridley make a "boring" movie....but it is Fox after all.

What about Alien vs Predator? And let's not forget AVP2.

If I were you, I wouldn't have tried to inflict so much misery on others by reminding them of those two movies.

By the way, watched this and was really let down. Terrible pacing, boring, and the xenomorphs aren't scary at all. Heck, that thing from Life is much more threatening than the xenos are in this movie. 5/10.

Well I can't say it's factually incorrect if that's his opinion.

It's wrong opinion nonetheless. Like saying black people are inferior, or Uwe Boll is a competent director

I'll post my more in depth review on RTM, but for here I'll say I gave it a 6/10, C rating. It wasn't flat out terrible as it had some good action sequences and some really nice set pieces, but other than that I hated the story. The plot to me was just too over the top, and although I liked some of the characters, they annoyed me more as really they made stupid decision after stupid decision. I can't say I'm dissapointed as I went in with little to expect, so my attitude to it is just blah.

I guess what is frustrating about it is just the fact that these movies were suppose to anwser our questions, and yet this movie just made questions and the few "answers" Scott gave us I didn't like.

Lol the fans of this franchise don't know what they want. They expect some A grade masterpiece in today's day and age from a franchise that was never meant to be more than a B grade one with thrills and blood. Alien got horrible reviews and extremely mixed reaction from audience back in the day. It wasn't considered a cult classic until time passed and Aliens made alien a must see.

Yes... Way too many questions left unanswered. Like...

how did Walter create the eggs with the facehuggers? How did he know that scenario would create the perfect alien, the Xenomorph? This really annoyed me, because I feel like Ridley really wanted to show how you get the Xenomorph after seeing different ways to get a alien in Prometheus and Covenant...
