Recommended Posts

Couldn't find any thread about Central America Box Office so here's so info.

For box office purposes, Central America consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama, with a combined population of around 43 million and a strong GDP growth.

In 2014, according to Rentrak, Central American cinemas grossed $107,184,606, up from $104,553,755 in 2013 and $ 94,814,293 in 2012: growth of about 13% in two years. There were 93 performing theaters in all of Central America in 2012, and 96 in 2013 and 2014,

Across Central America in 2014 the highest grossing movies were all studio blockbusters:

1. Transformers: Age of Extinction
2. Rio 2
3. Maleficent
4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
6. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay – Part 1
7. X Men: Days of Future Past
8. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies
9. How to Train Your Dragon 2
10. Guardians of the Galaxy

In Panama, the top 10 for 2014 were:

1. Transformers: Age of Extinction
2. Rio 2
3. Maleficent
4. X Men: Days of Future Past
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
7. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
8. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
9. The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay – Part 1
10. Annabelle

An adventure drama from Costa Rica, “Maikol Yordan”, opened in Dec 2014; it grossed $1,080,511 in Costa Rica in 2014, with accumulated gross of $3,528,104. That's a lot for a country with just 4.5 million people!

The region of latin America we know the less about given most of it is still very poor and it's relatively small in terms of population..But still I'm interested :)

Panama and Costa Rica are particularly interesting, they're probably the biggest markets.

Manu, you are from Panama. It says on the - numbers.com that Fast 7 did $10m in Panama. Is that possible?

I just saw that

It is impossible, we are only 4 million people

Also we only have 13 cinemas I think  (3 cinemark, 3 cinepolis and the rest are smaller)

there are many under construction right now, it is certain that the box office continues to rise but not for 10 million

maybe it's 1 million

Panama is the country with the highest economic growth in the last years of the region and tickets are still cheap

$5.00 normal and maybe $7.00 3D average

Maybe what they write as Panama is really the entire region of Central America, which have in the past been reported together.

That is correct , Panama is often reported as pretty much all central AM, other areas world similar some Middle eastern countries are combined, South Africa total is several other countries. well take US (or domestic) it includes Canada, other US territories PR,

Panama itself is almost at $us2m
