Rising Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, who recently garnered buzz from her performance in Ex Machina, will star in the upcoming thriller film The Circle. THR reports that that Vikander will take part opposite Tom Hanks in the film which will be directed by The Spectacular Now helmer James Ponsoldt. The project will be based on the novel of the same name by Dave Eggers which is about a young woman and recent college graduate who begins a job at a company, The Circle, a tech company run, among others, by an enigmatic older man. The job is incredibly rewarding, at first, but things start to slowly go awry. The film is among a deluge of others that Vikander is set to star in or is already awaiting release such as The Danish Girl, The Light Between the Oceans, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. http://thefilmstage.com/news/rogue-one-adds-diego-luna-jeff-nichols-sets-next-film-alicia-vikander-to-lead-the-circle-and-more/

Deadline understands there’s still some work to do to get the schedules aligned but it appears likely that, whatever happens with those two projects, Vikander is likely to drop off The Circle. Word we are hearing is that the producers have made an offer to Harry Potter star Emma Watson to play the young female lead. http://deadline.com/2015/05/alicia-vikander-tom-hanks-michael-fassbender-matt-damon-assassins-creed-jason-bourne-the-circle-1201432103/

Emma Watson has logged on for a starring role in the film adaptation of Dave Eggers’ The Circle, opposite Tom Hanks.

Watson will play a young woman who is hired for a big job in an Internet company called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. The novel turns into a contemporary thriller about the perils of life in a digital age where personal data is collected, sifted and monetized and used for surveillance, rendering privacy obsolete.

I'm reading this now. My ticket was bought with James Ponsoldt's involvement but it's engaging and surprisingly funny.

If it's being positioned as an awards contender I'm not buying it unless Ponsoldt goes full 'Black Swan' with it though.
