The weekends are getting 'Darker' and darker as the summer gets closer, with the year reaching a new low of 121,530 weekend admissions. The seuqel had a steeper drop than the original (62% vs 56%), even though the first one opened on Valentine's Day weekend. However the weekdays, and especially Tuesday, were very strong (Mon-to-Wed sold 69,104 admissions vs 'Grey's 78,859 admissions) so 'Darker' is now trailing 'Grey' by 32%, whereas last week it was trailing it by 37%. If it follows 'Grey's trajectory from now on, 'Darker' will reach 240K admissions (vs the original's 370K admissions). As for 'LEGO Batman', its lead over its predecessor has disappeared. It had a lower second weekend (12,165 vs 14,705 admissions) and a lower 11-day total (36,512 vs 43,184 admissions). 'The LEGO Movie's first Tuesday was the 25 March national holiday though. Next Monday, on the other hand, is another public holiday so we will see if 'LEGO Batman' can gain the lost ground (I doubt it). Other films in their sophomore frame were 'Neruda' which didn't hold incredibly well but is already making decent numbers for a non-Hollywood film. 'The Space Between Us' had the best hold of the weekend and nothing else to show for it.

The news was slightly brighter for newcomers. 'John Wick 2' had a 100%+ increase from its predecessor's opening (6,300 admissions) and is less than 500 admissions away from surpassing its entire run (14,823 admissions). 'Manchester by the Sea' had an amazing per-screen average of 1,170 admissions, beating Neruda's average from last week. 'A Cure for Wellness', on the other hand, was a disappointment. With a bit of luck, 'Split' may surpass 'Assassin's Creed' as January's biggest film. 'La La Land' can easily reach 200K admissions if it gets a boost from the Oscars (next Sunday). It is still ahead of 'The King's Speech' (141,808 admissions after 9 weekends) but is making about half in weekend earnings. Finally, 'Rings' had an even steeper drop this weekend.

The box office sank once again to new lows for 2017, with cumulative admissions for the 4-day weekend scraping past 100K admissions (103K admissions, to be precise) and 5-day admissions reaching 123K, as people were too busy celebrating the Carnival (up to Sunday) or flying kites (on Monday). These dismal results are worse than the same weekend last year (118K admissions) and worse than last year's Carnival–Clean Monday weekend (114K admissions from Thu to Sun, 143K admissions including Monday). 'Fifty Shades Darker' scored a hat trick, although that indicates other films' weakness more than anything else. 'Darker' plunged 57.2%, which is on par with 'Grey's 3rd weekend drop (58.6%). The drop was the biggest in the Top 10. 'A Cure for Wellness' also dropped significantly, which suggests that it was underwhelming, in line with the reviews. Other non-Oscar films saw drops around 20-25%. 'The LEGO Batman Movie' has managed to cover most of the distance between itself and its predecessor. It scored a bigger third weekend and has decreased its lag from 6.7K to 3.5K admissions. Whatever number it finishes at, it will still have retained most of its predecessor's admissions (at least 90%) which is a feat many sequels don't achieve. Finally, the big winners of the weekend were 'La La Land' and 'Manchester by the Sea'. 'La La Land' will soon cross 200K admissions, but after losing Best Picture, it's uncertain whether it will hold well next weekend. Last (and least), newcomers were quite disappointing. 'Médecin de Campagne' had the biggest per-screen average (536 admissions).

I'll create a table of Oscar films once I get weekend figures for films below the Top 10. Next week, 'Logan' will attempt to reinvigorate the box office. 'The Wolverine' opened to 23,702 admissions in July 2013, before finishing off with 105K admissions. 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' opened to 61.5K admissions and ended with a much smaller mulitplier and 143.4K admissions in total. I think this one will be closer to 'X-Men: Apocalypse's 42.3K-admission opening and 115K-admission total. 'Trainspotting 2' also opens this week and is a completely unknown quantity (probably small though). The first film came out in 1996.

I corrected a few mistakes from yesterday's post: 4-day admissions were actually above 100K admissions, 'La La Land' was not #1 on Clean Monday and 'Hidden Figures's admissions have been updated.

Best Picture nominees have done quite well this year:

Title Admissions Up to
La La Land 189,626 27/02/17
Arrival 57,965 Final
Hacksaw Ridge 40,040 Final
Moonlight 24,583 27/02/17
Manchester by the Sea 24,545 27/02/17
Lion 24,069 27/02/17
Hell or High Water 18,645 27/02/17
Hidden Figures 6,794 27/02/17

'Lion' and 'Hell's runs are almost over. 'Moonlight' may reach 30K admissions. 'Manchester' could even surpass 'Arrival' if it holds well (otherwise, a total above 'Hacksaw' is very likely). 'Hidden Figures' may reach the high 20s and 'La La Land' is certainly crossing the 200K-admission milestone. Could go much higher.

'Logan' opened on the high side of expectations and approached 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (61.5K admissions). It is in good shape to out-gross that film's total if it manages not to collapse in the following weeks, although 'Kong 2', 'Beauty' and 'Power Rangers' will make tough competition. In the meantime, Best Picture winner 'Moonlight' had an amazing boost, although still quite a disappointing number in absolute terms. It should be able to reach 50K admissions. 'Manchester' also saw a boost after winning two awards and also seems poised to reach 50K admissions and maybe even surpass 'Arrival'. 'La La Land', however, had a mild drop which can probably be explained by the fact that it increased last week. Its weekend figure was still higher than what it earned two weeks ago, so clearly the publicity from the Oscars and its 6 awards have done it some good. The 200K-admission milestone will be surpassed during the week. Its cumulative total is still ahead of 'The King's Speech' during the same point in its run, but the weekend figure is smaller. It has been in the Top 10 for 11 weeks now. Even if it doesn't reach 225K admissions, though, it has already surpassed all expectations. 'T2 Trainspotting' had a quiet opening. Its predecessor's gross is not known so no comparisons can be made.

With regard to other holdovers, 'LEGO Batman' will almost certainly surpass 'The LEGO Movie' (66.8K admissions) after another impressive hold. 'Sing' and 'Moana' re-appeared in the Top 10. 'Sing' has been in the Top 10 for 10 non-consecutive weekends; 'Moana' for 9. The prior has a chance of surpassing 200K admissions (and maybe even 'The Secret Life of Pets') if it has very good holds for the next weeks. It is not unheard of for animated films to hold so well for so long, however, there is no guarantee that it will. On the weekend that 'The Good Dinosaur' earned about 2.5K admisisons, it had made 191K admissions in total, and despite having very strong holds until then, it dropped very hard after that and didn't even make it to 200K admissions. 'Sing' is ahead of that film in weekend figures but behind it in terms of cumulative admissions. 'Moana', on the other hand, has a far greater chance of surpassing 'Zootopia'. 'Darker' continued its precipitous descent. Reaching 250K admissions is no easy feat regardless. 'John Wick 2' had a massive drop but it has already made more than 3 times its predecessor's total.

Last weekend sold more admissions than the same weekend last year and that will probably continue next week with 'Kong: Skull Island'. The first film sold 72K admissions in 5 days. Although expecting that level of traffic is probably too optimistic, this one should be able to clear 40K admissions, at least, in its first 4 days.

This article says Trainspotting did over 100.000 tickets in 1996. But to give some context, that movie was notorious and created a shitstorm of controversy back then with constant news coverage even before it opened. The outcry about the movie that glamourised drug use and would turn our children into junkies got so loud, that a judge had to see it first, to decide if it's OK to be released on Greece:lol:

Confirming my spot-on prediction (#not_bragging), 'Skull Island' saw a sizeable decline from its predecessor who made 62.6K over the 4-day weekend. However, the result was still satisfactory and the film can hope for a long run if it's not crushed by 'Beauty and the Beast' or 'Power Rangers' in the coming weeks. With no other opener in the Top 10, what was more impressive was a long list of holdovers. 'Logan' had an amazing 35% hold. That is something you rarely see among superhero films, suggesting this was a very good one. The total will surpass 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' during the week. After that, the next target is 'X2: X-Men United' (169.1K admissions). I don't have the admissions for the first or third X-Men films, but certainly 'Logan' has been a big success regardless. Oscar films' Manchester', 'Moonlight' and 'La La Land' all had drops in the 20s and 'La La Land' has finally crossed 200K admissions. It looks poised to approach 220K admissions, thus ranking #6 among 2016 films. It is currently at #11. 'Trainspotting 2' and 'Fifty Shades Darker' dropped quite steeply, although the latter had its best drop yet. It is headed towards 265-270K admissions, which 100K admissions less than its predecessor. Animated films showed continuing strength. 'LEGO Batman' and 'Moana' are both very close to surpassing 'The LEGO Movie' and 'Zootopia' respectively. 'Sing' is still aiming for 200K admissions.

Next week, 'Beauty and the Beast' will attempt to cast a spell on the market. With expectations being very high in the US, I don't really know what to expect. The ceiling is probably 'Alice's 83.2K-admission opening, but 'Beauty' may open closer to 'Cinderella's 44.9K admissions. I would certainly bet on 'Beauty' opening between the two.

It may have cast a spell on many countries, but Greece was certainly not that fussed about it. 'Beauty' did have an impressive opening though, even if it was not as record-breaking as in other countries. Among live-action adaptations of known Disney fairytales, 'Beauty' was ahead of 'Maleficent' (45.7K admissions) and 'Cinderella' (44.9K admissions) and only trailed 'Alice in Wonderland' (83.2K admissions). In terms of Disney live action in general (excluding the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise), it is the best effort since 2010's 'Prince of Persia' (60.6K admisisons). It's also the second-biggest opening of the year so far, behind 'Fifty Shades Darker'. If 'Beauty' follows the trajectory of similar films, it could achieve a 3x mulitplier, with a final total north of 170K admissions. However, I think that 200K admissions is a probable outcome. Peculiarly, all films in last week's Top 10 dropped by more than 50%, even though the screen count drop was not terribly high. 'Kong 2' is very unlikely to approach its predecssor's 231.2K admissions. By the looks of it, it will be lucky to reach half that number. 'Logan', on the other hand, has exceeded all expectations and will soon surpass 'X2' to become the highest-grossing (known) X-Men film – I don't have numbers for 'X-Men' (2001) and 'The Last Stand' (2006). 'LEGO Batman' has officially surpassed 'The LEGO Movie', while 'Manchester' and 'Moonlight' are both nearing the end of their very respectable runs.

As for other newcomers, they all pale in comparison to 'Beauty' and didn't make a significant splash in any way. The best per-screen average belongs to 'Gleißendes Glück' (648 admissions).

'Beauty' reigned for a second weekend, exhibiting a drop in par with 'Cinderella' and 'Alice', but a bit below 'Maleficent'. It was also the best second weekend of the year, out-grossing the previous high of 'Logan' (36,575 admissions), achieved two weeks ago. If the film maintains sub-40% drops, it is well on its way to 200K admissions. 'Get Out' had the best hold of the weekend, and Univeral must already be happy with that total. 'Kong 2' and 'Logan' both dropped heavily. 'Logan' has officially achieved the highest known admissions tally for the X-Men franchise though. Finally, 'LEGO Batman' held well too but is  nearing the end of its run (80K admissions is the ceiling).

The weekend's admissions were 94.9K admissions, which is less than half from last year, when 'Batman v Superman' won the spotlight with its humongous opening. It is the lowest admissions tally for a weekend since last August and the first time it falls below 100K admissions since mid-October. In fact, last Saturday was Greece's Independence Day, but that obviously did not boost the box office in any way. Five out of nine new films debuted in the Top 10, but that was not due to their strength but due to the general drop in attendance as holdovers lost screens. None of the nine films topped 10K admissions. 'Power Rangers' fared much worse in Greece than in the US and Canada.

In other news, 'Moana' (140.5K admissions) finally out-grossed 'Zootopia' (139.1K admissions). It has out-grossed all WDAS films of this decade save for 'Tangled' and 'Frozen'. Interestingly, despite 'Moana's massive 11x multiplier, 'Puss in Boots' opened on the same date in 2011 and achieved a 12.3x multiplier, which 'Moana' is unlikely to achieve. The last possible achievement for 'Moana' is to surpass 'The Princess and the Frog' (144.7K admissions). 'La La Land' (206.2K admissions) crashed suddenly and may not even join 2016's Top 10 – 'The Secret Life of Pets' is at #10 with 207.6K admissions. Greek film 'Perfect Strangers is also less than 500 admissions from reaching 200K, but with a 102-admission weekend, the milestone is slowly fading away into the distance. 'Sing' (189.6K admissions) is giving 'The Good Dinosaur' (195.3K admissions) a run for its money. Finally, 'Fifty Shades' is basically over at 260K admissions, 110K admissions less than its predecessor, but still an impressive number.

'Smurfs 3' was the weekend's winner by far even though it didn't win in any real sense. The film opened 6.9% lower than its predecessor (56.2K admissions) and 26.9% lower than the first 'Smurfs' film (71.6K admissions). Both of those opened in the much more lucrative autumn period, so I don't expect this one to match their legs. However, a total around 150K admissions is probably achievable. All holdovers in the Top 10 dropped heavily – after all, it's not easy to survive a tsunami of new films flooding the marketplace. 'Beauty' is moving away from the possibility of a 200K-admission run. The question is whether it will surpass 'Logan' or not... 'Get Out' didn't manage to replicate last weekend's success. 'Power Rangers' has only reassured us that it's a flop. 'Kong 2' and 'Logan' continue their precipitous drop to the ground.

As for newcomers, 'The Distinguished Citizen' had the highest per-screen average (580 admissions). Nothing notable happened other than 'Sumrfs 3'. However, cumulative weekend admissions bounced back to 6 digits: about 120,000. This was all thanks to the tiny blue mushroom parasites, so a return to 5 digits next weekend is likely. The week after that awaits the 'Fate of the Furious'...

Based on weekend admissions, the first quarter of 2017 is trailing 2016 and 2015 by slightly more than 10%. It is however ahead of 2013 and 2014. The second quarter certainly looks more promising than 2016 with such films as Furious 8, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Wonder Woman and Transformers 5. With such a slate, I am almost certain that the second quearter will rebound. Will it be enough to make up for the lost ground though?

Sorry guys, I have mostly been away from the internet due to the Easter holidays. This post is for the pre-Easter weekend. It was the quietest of the year so far (Easter weekend was even lower). 'The Boss Baby' had an average opening for a DWA film – and almost identical to last autumn's 'Trolls'. 'Smurfs 3' and 'Beauty' took a hit. Other films didn't drop too bad. Other openers were virtually non-existent. Expect an update tomorrow regarding the long Easter weekend (including Monday). Bear in mind that cinemas go quiet during Easter with a lot of them being closed completely on the Friday and Saturday before Easter Sunday. Ta ta for now!

'Fate of the Furious did not break the opening weekend record in Greece, as it did in many other countries. That record is still held by '300', which had a 4-day weekend of 317-325K admissions back in 2007 (reports vary). However, no one expected it to do so, since it is impossible to break the opening-weekend record on Easter weekend. Most cinemas are closed on Friday and Saturday and people are too busy with family reunions and eating meat to death. In any case, that did not stop 93K people from watching the 8th 'Fast and Furious' film during its first 5 days. On Thursday, it broke the opening-day record for the franchise: 37,712 admissions, which was just above the 'Furious 7' (37,112 admissions). That was an impressive result in itself since the week before Easter is generally quite quiet. It then sold 247 admissions on Friday, 2,395 on Saturday, 14,100 on Sunday and 38,522 admissions on Monday. These exponential day-to-day increases are typical for this this weekend and they give useful insight into Greek moviegoing habits. It sold another 62,967 admissions on Tuesday and Wednesday for a 7-day total of 155,943 admissions. I think the sophomore frame can approach 100K admissions.

Other than FF8, no other opener did significant business. As for holdovers, 'The Boss Baby' and 'Smurfs 3' are doing well and will continue throughout the post-Easter week (schools are off for the whole week). 'The Boss Baby' still has a shot at 100K admissions, while 'Sumrfs 3' is struggling to match its predecessor's gross (185.4K admissions). Nothing is impossible but animated films tend to have long runs so it's difficult to make accurate predictions. The odds are about the same for 'Beauty' to surpass 'Logan'. The latter and 'Kong 2' probably enjoyed their final week in the Top 10. 'Logan' has truly impressed, while 'Kong 2' had a middling overall preformance.

'Fast 8' is now the biggest film of the year and is on its way to cross 300K admissions, even if it finishes behind its predecessor's 370K admissions. 'The Boss Baby' has enjoyed a nice multiple so far. Everything else is edging closer to the end. Total tickets for the weekend hit a new low for 2017 (66.8K admissions), even though Monday the 1st was a public holiday.

'Guardians 2' did not surprise as much as some were expecting but the summer period has kicked in, people are already going to the beach and students have exams soon, so it is actually quite impressive that the space opera sequel surpassed its predecessor's opening by 37%. The first one opened to 25,646 admissions in September 2014, which is a much more lucrative period for movies anyway.

The weekend hit a new record-low for the year in terms of cumulative admissions (62,452). This was mostly due to two facts: 'Legend of the Sword' was far from a king-size opening and 'Guardians 2' had a steep drop. In fact, thinking back at 'King Arthur' from 2004, that film scored a 168.5K-admission 5-day opening. Greeks tend to like this kind of films, so this weekend's result is even more disappointing. As for 'Guardians 2', the sophomore frame was lower than its predecessor, which had scored 11,968 admissions back in September 2014. The cumulative total of the sequel is still 9K admissions ahead but if the drops continue to be this bad, it will finish below the first one's 88,292-admission total. 'The Boss Baby' has held very well compared to other DWA films and if it surpasses the 128.2K-admission total of 'Penguins of Madagascar', it will actually become the biggest DWA film since 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' (256.2K admissions), released nearly 5 years ago. A major success in that sense. 'Smurfs 3' has been less lucky; it has earned a higher total but that pales in comparison to its predecessor (185.4K admissions). The multiple is also much lower (2.65x vs 3.30x). 'Furious 8' has done very well, even if it dropped from 'Furious 7'. It has still gone way higher than all other films of the franchise and is about to become only the second film of the franchise to cross 300K admissions. 'Geumul', finally, had a very impressive hold from just 7 screens.

As for other newcomers, there is nothing of note really. Horrible weekend numbers, horrible per-screen averages, pointless over-crowding of cinemas with loads of new films that have no interest whatsoever. Of course, the economic crisis is deepening day by day so it is no wonder that the cinemas are also facing big drops in attendance compared to the previous decade.

In other news, 'Logan' concluded its run with 189,928 admissions and a 3.40x multiple. This makes it the biggest film of the X-Men franchise (among those with known totals, i.e. excluding 'X-Men' and 'X-Men: The Last Stand'), while its mulitple is one of the highest among superhero films – the ones that have gone higher on my list are 'The Wolverine' (4.43x), 'Spider-Man 2' (3.86x), 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (3.53x) and 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (3.44x).

This weekend was a new record-low for the year, in terms of cumulative attendance (56,784 admissions). 'Covenant' had a disastrous start. 'Alien vs Predator' had sold 16,400 admissions in Athens only (nationwide opening unknown) in 2004. 'Aliens vs Predator - Requiem' sold 10,600 admissions in Athens only in 2008. This one sold 11,521 admissions in Athens. Finally 'Prometheus' sold 29,620 admissions nationwide in 2012 – significantly higher than 'Covenant'. 'Legend of the Sword' and 'Guardians 2' both had steep drops. 'The Boss Baby' and 'Smurfs 3' held very well and will likely continue on this course. 'Norm of the North' had an interestingly strong hold but a pathetic total. 'Fate of the Furios' has finally crossed 300K admissions but will likely finish with a total below 310K admissions. Nevertheless, it had a decent drop from its predecessor and a very respectable total for these grim times that we're going through. Three newcomers occupied the lower part of the Top 10 with nothing interesting about them worth mentioning.

Next week comes 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales', subtitled 'The Revenge of Salazar' in Greece as well. The last had opened to 153,500 admissions. Seeing how it's performing in other countries, anything above 100K admissions would be satisfactory. We'll see!

Some booty was injected into the box office this weekend, after the fifth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film debuted to what was the biggest opening since last year's 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' but the lowest opening of the franchise. The film opened to just below half 'Dead Man's Chest's then-record 219.7K opening. That was of course a different time when the box office was booming but that is not to say that there haven't been any monster-size successes since then, so clearly the Greek audience has lost interest in the 'Pirates' franchise. The fivequel is looking to capitalise on next week's holiday (Monday is a religious national holiday) but, even so, the best I can hope for is a mutliple around the level of its immediate predecessors (~2.5-2.6x). Anything more than that is welcome but unlikely. However, the small Thursday-to-Friday drop (17%) and the big Saturday increase suggest that it won't be very front-loaded. With 'Wonder Woman' not opening this week, but the week after, 'Dead Men Tell No Tales' has some breathing space to grab some extra cash. We'll see. For now, these are all the numbers for the franchise:

Pirates of the Caribbean
Title Opening weekend Release date Total Multiple
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 219,696 24/08/06 655,639 2.98
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End 213,490 24/05/07 539,622 2.53
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 152,908 19/05/11 395,955 2.59
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 140,090 12/09/03* 585,000 4.18
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales 108,145 25/05/17

*Back then, it was a 3-day weekend

As for holdovers, 'Covenant', 'Legend of the Sword' and 'Guardians 2' dropped sizeably due to 'Pirates'. On the other hand, 'The Boss Baby' and 'Smurfs 3' had big boosts and may enjoy similar ones next weekend due to the Monday holiday. 'Norm of the North' held very well too. The other openers all performed miserably.

After 5 months, the year is trailing 2016 by 6% and 2015 by 4%. It is ahead of 2014, 2013 and 2012 by more than 10%. Not so bad but not so good either. For the final update on the 2016 yearly chart and the newly added 2017 Top 10, click here.

'Pirates 5' had a big drop, as did all holdovers of the Top 10. It is trailing all its predecessors and 300K admissions is not a complete certainty at this point. 'The Boss Baby' and 'Smurfs 3' have done quite well through their 9th and 10th weekends respectively. All new films were quite disappointing. The only one that had a per-screen average of more than 500 was 'A Quiet Passion' which opened in 6 venues.

'Wonder Woman' had a solid opening, even though it was much lower than any Superman or Batman film. It was higher than last month's 'Guardians 2' by about 3.5K admissions. It should surpass 100K admissions even if it doesn't go much higher. 'Pirates 5' continued its preceipitous fall to the bottom. All other holdovers dropped heavily, except the two animated films: 'The Boss Baby' and 'Smurfs 3' both of which have done much better than their opening weekend suggested. Other openers faired poorly.

'Cars 3' had an unexpectedly good opening, above both its predecessors, which opened in the high-30s range. It is the 6th best opening for Pixar and the second-best animated opening of the year, after 'Smurfs 3' (52,324 admissions).  'The Mummy' had a middling start, not unlike its start in other countries. 'Wonder Woman' had a rather impressive 2nd-weekend drop, since most superhero films drop by far more than 50% during their sophomore frame. Other exceptions include 'Marvel's the Avengers' (-49.9%) and 'Days of Future Past' (-46.6%). 'Pirates 5' had its first sub-50% drop and will probably edge past 300K admissions by the end of its run. Other holdovers and openers have been utterly boring. 'The Boss Baby' is a rare exception, remaining for an 11th week in the Top 10.

'Cars 3' retained first place for a second weekend, although this was not due to any particularly strong holding power – if anything the sophomore drop was quite high. It was rather due to the (expected) absolute debacle of 'Transformers 5'. 'Cars 3' scored a slightly higher second weekend than 'Cars 2' and much lower than 'Cars', although it is ahead of both films' 11-day total. 'Transformers 5' had the worst opening of the franchise by far:

Transformers
Title Athens OW National OW (4-day) Release date Total admissions
Transformers 31,000 49,000 Thu 12 Jul 07 136,200

Transformers: The Last Knight 8,834 15,532 Thu 22 Jun 17

*incl. Wednesday: 72,390 admissions

**incl. Wednesday: 70,630 admissions

100K admissions for 'Transformers 5' is definitely out of the question, a milestone crossed last weekend by 'Wonder Woman'. 'Pirates 5' is nearing 300K admissions, while the lower part of the charts was populated by French films which summed up to slightly more than 11.5K admissions. 'Going in Style' had an indifferent start, while 'The Mummy' dropped sharply after its mediocre opening.

Sorry for the big delay. Coming close to this year's record-low, the weekend saw 72,511 admissions being sold. The drops were big and the openers were small. The heat was way too much for anyone to think about anything other than a beach or ice-cream. It was relatively impressive that an Italian comedy topped the charts. Notably low was the drop for 'Pirates 5' which will almost certainly cross 300K admissions. 'Cars 3' will probably surpass the total of 'Cars 2' but not the original 'Cars'. 'Trasnformers 5' was a complete debacle. 'Wonder Woman' has done quite well. All others were not worth much attention.

UPDATE: Halfway through 2017, the year is ahead of 2012, 2013 and 2014. It is on par with 2015 and 3.2% behind 2016. Overall, not bad, but there are no real signs of market recovery either. Stagnation is, at best, the way to describe it.

'Homecoming' disappointed on every front. It had a lower opening than all 'Spider-Man' sequels (we don't know the opening for the original 'Spider-Man'). It was lower than many other superhero films of the past year, even ones like 'Logan', which is a sequel. Italian comedies have become a popular choice for distributors this summer – even ones that opened in 2011 like 'Che Bella Giornata'. Other films dropped big, with the exception of 'Tarde para la ira' which still has a pathetic total. Openers were quite small and the 107.2K-admissions total of the weekend would have been quite worse without 'Homecoming'.
