Another non-Hollywood non-Greek comedy tops the charts ahead of numerous Hollywood blockbusters. 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' debuted to 16,644 admissions in early August 2011 and 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' started with 18,595 admissions in July 2014. Pathetic numbers overall, but for 'War' to debut even lowet than that, clearly this franhcise does not concern the Greek audience anymore. This is also the case for the 'Spider-Man' franchise, whose latest outing will most likely be the lowest of the franchise in total admissions. All holdovers dropped heavily (55%+) except 'Cars 3' which had a minuscule drop, surpassed the total of 'Cars 2' and will probably surpass the original 'Cars' in Athens admissions (nationwide admissions for 'Cars' are not available). 'Cars 3' is also on course to surpass 'The Boss Baby' and 'Smurfs 3' to become the biggest animated film of the year. In other news, 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' will surpass 'Furious 8' mid-week to become the biggest film of the year with about 305K admissions, the lowest number for the franchise.

I'm sorry for being less consistent this summer. Hopefully, by the end of the month, I'll be back to business as usual. The summer has been quite uneventful. 'Contratiempo' has been the most notable non-Hollywood film in the past 3 weeks. It surpassed 'À Bras Ouverts' which opened higher but had bigger drops. The biggest non-Hollywood film of the summer so far has been 'L'ora legale' (53,667 admissions), but 'Contratiempo' has chances of surpassing it. 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' is closing in on 'Wonder Woman' (125,196 admission). 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' surpassed 'Furious 8' and is now the biggest film of the year. 'Cars 3' is the biggest animated film of the year and the 8th biggest out of 14 Pixar films released since 2003. Meanwhile 'The Boss Baby' and 'Sumrfs 3' have both crossed 150K admissions. It will be interesting to see if 'Despicable Me 3' manages to top these films, when it comes out at the end of the month.

Weekend 10-13/08/2017

Sorry for the long absence from the thread. The weekend numbers for the weekend 10-13 August 2017 are not available at any source that I track.

Weekend 17-20/08/2017

For the weekend 17-20 August 2017, I shall not post the numbers as they are available in the above post (first chart), but also because I cannot calculate the % change from the previous weekend (since the numbers from the previous weekend are not available), therefore I cannot add any new information. It is important to note that, during that weekend, we had the closest ever photo-finish of the last 6-and-a-half years (my data runs back to January 2011). Only 65 admissions!! August is generally a very quiet time for the box office, therefore admissions are very low and this increases the likelihood of photo-finishes anyway. That is why, in my opinion, the second-smallest photo-finish, the one between 'Doctor Strange' and 'Trolls', remains the most impressive.

'Dunkirk' had an impressive start. Among non-Batman Christopher Nolan films, only 'Interstellar' had a normal 4-day weekend and available numbers: 49,581 admissions in November 2014. 'Inception' had 20K admissions in previews the weekend before opening officially and then it opened on a Tuesday and totaled 150,680 admissions by Sunday. Massive numbers but that's why you put DiCaprio in the lead role. No opening weekend numbers are available for 'The Prestige', but are certainly lower than 'Dunkirk'. 'Dunkirk' opened close to 'Batman Begins' (56K admissions) but came nowhere near its sequels. The other two openers of the week in the Top 10 were completely unimpressive.

As for holdovers, 'Atomic Blonde' had an interesting jump, although last weekend it did open on Saturday, so it only had two days of play. The three first places of last week's race finished in reverse order, in places 4, 5 and 6 and it is likely that their final totals will rank that way too. Steep drops across the board, with the exception of 'Cars 3'. It has made an unexpected 170K admissions (it has probably surpassed the original 'Cars' by now). Things will finally get interesting next week with ' Despicable Me 3'...

Using the average ticket price, this should be over 70k tickets which is great considering that the release date wasn't that good.

It sold 82,418 admissions over its 4-day opening. It is the 4th biggest opening of all time for an animated film.

The release date is perfect. The summer box office is very quiet in Greece but the first weekend of September is always an ideal spot to open a film. 'Finding Dory' and 'Minions' both opened in September and scored big openings too. More later today...

I was just worried that with schoold opening traffic may be hurt a bit. Anyway, it seems that it will be fine.

'Despicable Me 3' revived the box office after a dreadful summer. It started off with 21,307 admissions on Thursday (almost identical to 'Finding Dory' which opened on the same weekend last year – 21,393) but then it didn't hold as well throughout the weekend. It has certainly come down a bit from 'Minions' and I suspect that it will be equally front-loaded. This would mean a total around 260–270K admissions. Not bad but certainly not amazing either.

Biggest animated openings (and their totals)
Ranking Title Opening weekend Release date Total
1 Ice Age: The Meltdown 93,000 06/04/06 350,000-360,000
2 Minions 91,770 24/09/15 290,513
3 Finding Dory 90,356 01/09/16 295,338
4 Despicable Me 3 82,418 31/08/17
5 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 80,337 29/06/09 384,829
6 Tangled 77,247 06/01/11 232,500
7 A Christmas Carol 72,323 24/12/09 175,456
8 The Smurfs 71,600 08/09/11 283,010
9 Ratatouille 68,000-70,000 27/09/07 312,019
10 Ice Age: Continental Drift 67,836 05/07/12 305,445

'Dunkirk' had a sizeable decline (compared to 'Interstellar's 7.9% sophomore drop) but it was still good enough. 200K admissions now looks like a serious possibility and it will only be the 5th 2017 film to achieve that, assuming 'Despicable Me 3' does too. Most other holdovers had huge drops and even for those which didn't there is not much to write about. As for other openers, 'Rock'n Roll' had the best per-screen average (573 admissions).

As of last Sunday, the 2017 box office is running 6% behind 2016 but is ahead of 2012–2015. It does seem to be headed for the same sort of range as 2015 and 2016: between 9.5 and 10 million admissions for the year. No growth and nothing exciting.

I am actually very fluent in Greek since my mother comes from Greece. So the worry is not about me :P . I come for holidays every summer. Amazing country!!

'Despicable Me 3' had a solid drop. There is no definitive picture here though. It had a bigger drop than 'Minions' but a higher 11-day total. It had a smaller drop than 'Finding Dory' but a lower 11-day total. 'Dory' however held better than 'Minions' in the long run and eventually out-grossed it (although not by much). All in all, a total 260K–280K admissions is quite likely for 'Despicable Me 3' and I'm starting to feel that 290K admissions may not be far off. 'Dunkirk' had a big drop but is still headed for 200K admissions. This may not be an astronomical figure but it at least suggests that Nolan has established a decently-sized following in Greece by now. 'American Made' had an unimpressive opening as did the other openers. Other holdovers fell hard, with the exception of 'The Hitman's Bodyguard' and 'The Son of Bigfoot'. Sub-50K admission totals for both so not much else to say.

Last weekend saw the fourth film of the 'Conjuring' franchise open to record numbers. Hopefully it can gather a solid number of admissions before 'It' arrives, which remains an unknown quantity. I wouldn't be surpised though if 'Creation' ended up being the lowest-grossing film of the franchise.

'Despicable Me 3' saw a big drop as did most other films in the Top 10. It is now behind both 'Minions' and 'Finding Dory' at the same point in their run (227.5K and 221.9K admissions respectively). It had a much smaller third weekend than 'Minions' (38.4K admissions) and was on par with 'Dory' (23.4K admissions). I wonder if 'Emoji Movie' will have an impact on Gru when it arrives next week. My estimate remains within the initial range of 260–270K admissions. 'American Made' is headed for a modest 60–70K admissions, while 'Dunkirk' is still on course to cross the 200K-admission milestone. 'Victoria and Abdul' and 'Sense of an Ending' were the other openers in the Top 10. Quite unremarkable openings for both. Finally, 'Wind River' and 'The Son of Bigfoot' had increases from last weekend, although their totals are not particularly exciting.

I wouldn't worry much about DM3 lagging behind Minions and Dory, animations in Greece have marathon runs. Lack of competition will help a lot despite bigger drops in the first few weeks. Minions was released 3 weeks apart with Inside Out, and Dory had Pets released two weeks before. DM3 has only stuff like Emoji, The Star and Ninjago to face for the next 3 months which all them will top out under 150.000 admissions, if at all. I can see it crawling its way to 300.000 adm. just because it will be around until mid-December when Coco gets released.

'Annabelle 2' enjoyed a second weekend at the top with an amazing hold. It is the fastest film of the franchise to reach 100K admissions by a significant margin. The first 'Annabelle' had made 92.9K admissions by its second weekend. We'll see if it can withstand the tide of 'It', which arrives this weekend. The good news continues in #2, where 'Kingsman 2' opened to a higher number than the original. That one had opened to a 4-day 12.5K admissions and 15.9K admissions, when previews are included. Both numbers were beaten by the sequel. The first film's 51.7K-admission total is thus well within reach. At #3, Gru's threequel enjoyed the first sub-50% drop, in a similar way to 'Dory' and 'Minions'. It is still trailing both films in total admissions but the arrival of 'The Emoji Movie' doesn't seem to have affected it much. The latter's opening is not very good news for Sony Pictures Animation, which has had multiple successes in the past with the franchises like 'Smurfs', 'Hotel Transylvania' and 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs'. All of them, except for 'Cloudy 2', had surpassed 100K admissions, a feat that 'The Emoji Movie' is unlikely to achieve. 'Dunkirk' is headed steadily for 200K admissions and 'Interstellar' numbers are now getting closer. A couple more openers made a quiet arrival, while 'American Made' and 'V&A' plummeted. 'Bigfoot', another animated film, had another small drop.

Total admissions for the weekend were on par with last year. Hopefully, things will pick up as we approach Christmas.

IT absolutely slayed with 101.000 admissions OW.

It's going to be the biggest horror movie since the Shyamalan heyday of 6th sense-Village by a very wide margin.

Also DM3 droped just 6% to the surprise of absolutely no one and will continue to dominate early afternoon screenings since nobody cares about emoji.

'It' had an out-of-the-park opening. It is the biggest opening for a horror film since 'The Village' opened to 118,000 admissions in 2004.  The latter sold 306,300 admissions in total. Other horror films that have crossed 200K admissions include 'The Others' (365,067 admissions), 'The Sixth Sense' (360,000 admissions), 'What Lies Beneath' (330,000 admissions), 'Signs' (325,000 admissions) and Hannibal (250,000 admissions). It will be interesting to see how far up the list 'It' can go. 'Despicable Me 3' cruised past 250K admissions and is now certainly aiming to give 'Minions' and 'Dory' a run for their money. It had a higher 5th weekend than both, although their totals are still higher at the same point in their run. 'Annabelle 2' is close to surpassing 'Annabelle' and 'The Conjuring 2'. Not much else happening in the Top 10.

With three quarters of the year behind us, 2017 is ahead of 2012-2014, on par with 2015 and 4.2% behind 2016.

I don't have any data to back it up but I'm pretty sure the 6th sense number is Athens-only because back in the 90s all the papers/magazines were reporting almost exclusively Athens-only numbers and the 6th sense was a gigantic hit that played for months. I'm also sure if we got numbers for Signs it would also be in the 250.000+ ballpark. Shyamalan was huge between 99-04.

You're right. 'Signs' sold 325,000 admissions according to the LUMIERE database. I can't say anything about the 'Sixth Sense' number though, as I was just using your list as a source.

'It' stayed on top for a second weekend, although it dropped rather sharply. If its weekend drops fall below 50% in the following weeks, though, it could still reach 300K admissions. The following weeks will thus be quite interesting to watch. Will any film push 'Pirates 5' off its perch (310K admissions)? 'It' and 'Despicable Me 3' are both in contention to do that. 'Justice League' and 'Star Wars 8' are also vying for that spot. The answer may be: all four, in which case I wonder which one will end up staying at #1. In my opinion, the year's top spot will be a race between 'Star Wars 8' and a Greek film, 'To teleftaio simeioma' ('The Last Note'). This is another historical drama, just like most Greek films that perform exceptionally. It is directed by Pantelis Voulgaris, who gave us 'Brides' (680K admissions in 2004) and 'Little Enlgand' (367K admissions in 2013) and will be released on October 26. In any case, an interesting quarter lies ahead.

'Blade Runner 2049' was as disappointing here as it was elsewhere. 'Un beau soleil intérieur' had a high per-screen average (764 admissions) but otherwise there was nothing of note with regard to openers. 'Annabelle 2' and 'Kingsman 2' are now day(s) away from surpassing their respective predecessors, so we can safely call them successes. 'Dunkirk' is also days away from topping 200K admissions, becoming the 6th film of 2017 to achieve that, since 'It' beat it to #5.
