The Hunger Games Franchise: What went so right (THG, CF) and then so wrong (MJ1, MJ2)

LOTR would disagree. (Although one factor in LOTR's success was that each movie grew in scale and scope).

Each LOTR movie was beloved though.  Catching Fire, the best received of the HG, still wasn't close to that level of reception.

The Hobbit is a better small scale comparison to Hunger Games in that regard.  At least their finales compare well.  BOFA and MJ2 both proved that a film being a finale doesn't mean an increase if you don't market your film, and if people didn't like the previous film.  Finales will only provide that boost if you can make your audiences want to see the conclusion.

I don't think Harry Potter or Twilight were ever good comparisons.  DH1 was still well-liked and the franchise had been going on for a near decade, that's 10 years of build up for one big finale.

Twilight had a dedicated fanbase that had roughly the same people turning up for every movie.  They all averaged close to the same minus the first one.

Hunger Games lacked the build up for the finale Harry Potter had, and lost the general audience that allowed it to reach 400m by poor marketing and making the last two films total bores.

You have epic journey in the first setting the world.

The Epic battle of Helms Deep in the 2nd.

Third you likely still have the largest battle put to film in ROTK with famous shots like the Charge of The Riders or Rohan and the Epic Oliphant charge.

It was a buildup of scale that few franchises do well.

The Variety "buzz meter" is hilarious in hindsight, it joins the pantheon of "Ultron tracking for a 235M OW" from Variety as well : http://variety.com/2015/film/news/star-wars-the-force-awakens-hunger-games-mockingjay-box-office-1201600785/

The consumer tracking company polled 3,000 people about upcoming fall movies and found that “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” were the most hotly anticipated upcoming releases. In fact, both films scored some of the highest ratings Piedmont has recorded since it began polling audiences five years ago. The company rates consumer engagement on a scale of zero to 1,000, and the fourth and final “Hunger Games” had a 514 rating, beating last summer’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and its score of 509, as the best overall number it has ever recorded.

The “Star Wars” sequel posted a 495 rating, the third best figure since Piedmont began its surveys. It also had the best score among males that Piedmont has seen with 553. Females also are looking forward to the film, with their interest level hitting 383.

Thats 3 and out and the audience knew it going in though. The rule of 3 is strong. I think people naturally have a trilogy thing built in there mind like oh its the 3rd one its the final one. 4 always feels like a money grab. In this sense we felt like we were getting a nice new trilogly. If the the 3rd film was the final film, no games wouldn't matter, it was the end of a trilogy of a series high mark the hype would have been there, but 4 is a lot more to ask of people it starts to feel like a money grab to the GA sub copiously I believe, plus 2 in a row no games. Has any franchise had a 4th film be equally successful to the previous 3 (domestically) when using the same universe and characters besides Potter.

4 years in a row is too much to ask, if LOTR happened to be 4 books I'm not sure the 3rd would have gone up.
