That was better than I expected. The look of the film is nothing special and the obvious mechanics of the script are showing especially when she gets back home and there's an irish fella that likes her, a job and the evil former boss that knows her secret. But the movie makes some very important things very right.

1.It looks much more like a low key Nicholas Sparks story than a stuffy awards movie about a BIG ISSUE. It's about Ellis struggle to escape from first scene to last, they never attempt to make it something more which is a brilliant choice.

2.Ronan sells the hell out of the movie. She is captivating throughout. She should become a star.

The force of nostalgia and the pull of home never have been beter portrayed. That ending... Ronan's performance...

I already adore this movie and since last night it is constantly growing on me. The only other films to do so with such energy are TFA, Inside Out and this one.

Brooklyn is a fascinating character study and a very sweet romance. The first half of the movie where Eilis discovers Brooklyn and what it's like to live on her flirts with magic. Everyone in Brooklyn wants to be helpful in some way, and it's just lovely. Ronan's performance is stellar, showing majestic range and always being believable. Emory Cohen is great too; his chemistry with Ronan makes the movie sing, and is subtle. Actually, the movie itself is delightfully subtle with fun editing. The cinematography looks beautiful despite the digital cameras and shaky cam because it adds to the somewhat dreamy feel of the film. Unfortunately, the second half of the film flirts with absurdity a bit too much and it feels as though Eilis' character might be lost in the forced drama around her. Thankfully, the final ten minutes gives her the agency she needs and makes one realize that in a way, the unsubtle second half was subtly setting you up for the perfect ending. Brooklyn is lovely, powered by impressive performances and a charming script; although the second half might keep it from perfection, it's still a fantastic period piece and a very good movie. A-
