Sunshine, Light, and Joy

This is a post that I've been thinking about for awhile. Recently, I opened up the discussion to other members of the staff to get their feelings on the matter, and their opinions generally matched mine, which is this:

Within the last year or so, there's been a steady increase of negative posts in movie threads. We've always had some heated discussions for some movies, but recently things have not only gotten more histrionic in those threads (generally speaking, the CBM ones), but they've started to spread to other franchises and other movies as well. I'm not talking about out-and-out trolling, I'm talking about members feeling they have to consistently shit on a movie (or studio, or star) simply because they aren't interested in the current project or projects. With every piece of news about a movie, it's now a virtual guarantee that there's a flood of people rushing to say they think it sucks, they don't like the current trailer/tv spot/actor/actress/director/concept. And I get it -- we all have movies we don't like, movies which we think are bad ideas, industry people that just don't appeal to us. But there's a fine line between expressing your opinion about this and doing it so often, with such consistency, that the collective emphasis of all of it basically brings down the entire thread and thus the entire forum.

There's no easy answer to this. We don't want to crush freedom of expression here. But at the same time, the spirit of this forum is for people to have fun talking about the movies they love and the box-office runs they love.

To have fun.

And while it may be fun -- in a sense -- to personally vent about a movie, or to vent at people who dare to enjoy something you don't, it doesn't bring fun to our community. In fact, it generally drags down the overall fun for everyone else. We've had people repeatedly mention to us over the last several months or so that in some cases they don't even bother going into some threads -- even for movies they're curious about! -- because they just don't want to deal with the overall mess those threads contain. And frankly, that matches the personal opinion of most of the staff as well.

So this post is both a request and a warning.

The request: Next time you feel like taking a dump on a movie (or a topic) for the dozenth time, take a moment to consider whether it's really worth it. People probably already have a good idea of what your attitude about the project is. Maybe just put your posting energy into a movie that you enjoy and love or are excited about.

The warning: The staff is going to be taking a closer look at some of these threads and we'll be more active with temp thread-bans if we think it'll help the overall vibe of the forum. I'd rather we don't have to, but it's not going to constrain any of you too much if you aren't allowed to post about a movie you supposedly don't care about anyway.

Remember the words of Bill and Ted: "Be Excellent to Each Other".

They're just movies, guys. It's about having fun.

Derby & Derby Game Feature Requests

17 posts in this topic

@Shawn and I designed the base game design and look & feel.

The beta testers ( Staff and Premium users ) offered a lot of feedback on the base game.

Now it's your turn.  What features, functionality and changes would you like to see in the Derby and related sub-games?

I'll use this 1st post to track all features I expect to add:

Base Game

  • Weekly Game Charts - These charts visualize the data for a weekly game.  Right now I am displaying: Avg Pred/Actual/You, Difference from Average, and the $ break outs of alll 10 movies by Avg Pred/Actual/You
  • Overall Charts - Not finalized but will contain comparisons between you, the average, and any other player. Also some type comparison against the actuals.

Tournaments

  • Display a comparison of you and your opposites predictions.

Would it be any trouble to add a 'Rank' column on the Standings page like we have for the Weekly Scores?

Here is a list of functionality I'm thinking of putting in the Game.  On all of these I'd love feedback on the best way to do it.

Notifications

It's challenge for people to remember to play every week.  Especially those that don't like to put in predictions until later that week.  I've tried different ways to remind people with various degrees of success.  Here are the options I can think of right now.

  1. Forum announcement ( like last week ) on the final day of predictions.
  2. An email when predictions open.
  3. An email before predictions close ( the # hours before configurable by you )

Before I do any of these I'd like feedback from the players on what would work.

Data & Charts

I'm always willing to put in more views of the data and charts to visualize the data.  However people need to let me know what they want to see

Top performers and statistics

At both a weekly/overall level - Top total %, new %, holdover %, all players against actuals, # wins, # top 10s...

Derby Fantasy League

I'm thinking of doing a Derby Fantasy League over the summer season.  In it's simplest form it would be 10 players per league who would play round-robin matches against each other throughout the summer with a tournament for the top 4 at the end of the season.  Or instead of just you against 9 other players in a league allow people to put together a team of 2-4 people and complete against 9 other teams.  Or likely some combination.

Let me know if there is any interest.

My thoughts:

Notifications - a forum announcement (preferably a banner message or similar) a day before is a must.  Would the system be capable of generating an optional pop-up notification when the Derby opens and on the day before predictions close?  Looks like we have a lot of players who don't even enter predictions until late Thursday, while many others have posted they totally forgot.  I also think a configurable e-mail reminder is great, too - perfect for those who need it but can be disabled for those who don't.

Stats - it would be neat to show how many Derby victories a player has.  Aside from that, I think what we have now is great.  There's been some suggestions about streamlining how we can view information about our Tournament opponents and anything to this end would be welcomed by most players.

Fantasy League - I like the idea of the Round Robin, probably no more than 10-12 players per league.  My suggestion would be to hold off on this until the Spring (or even start of Summer) until players can get situated playing the traditional Derby/Tournament.  I'm working to recruit more players (who will be complete rookies at this) and giving them and everyone else time before Captain America kicks off Summer in May would be helpful.

Thanks for all your hard work!

So basically what we seen on the Weekly Scores but only yours for all games played?

Should be doable... I'll look into it.

Has any thought been given to keeping all player predictions hidden until after the deadline?

On the "all your weekly scores" section, I think the weeks should be clickable, bringing you to that section on "your weekly scores".

I've noticed that I can't save edits to existing Derby estimates from my phone (IOS). I can enter the number but it won't save.  I use a computer and it's fine.

Is it possible to have access to some kind of scoring calculator to project our score before the final results?

It isn't particularly complicated scoring so you can do it yourself, or you can use this scoring calculator I made for myself: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1F-ePtMPLGuoFDN8Q70UTvrzSeROsg2gPog8xZeDSc6w/edit?usp=sharing
