EXCLUSIVE: Jeff Robinov’s first homegrown project in production from his Studio 8 shingle? It is an ambitious film called The Solutrean, and Albert Hughes will direct the survival tale set 20,000 years ago in the Ice Age. Word is getting around because they have begun casting a film meant to shoot late this year or early next, in Iceland and Canada. It is a visually striking epic-adventure, and the title refers to the Upper Paleolithic period of early advanced humans in Europe. It has to do with a hunting expedition gone awry and a young survivor’s quest to brave the inhospitable and dangerous conditions to find his way back. The film, which was hatched by Hughes and will take advantage of the Imax 3D format, was scripted by Dan Wiedenhaupt. Hughes is producing it with Andrew Rona.

EXCLUSIVE: Studio 8 and director Albert Hughes have just finished casting their Ice Age epic The Solutrean, which marks the first project mounted by the Sony-based company on its own. Jóhannes Haukur Johannesson (Black’s Game, A.D. The Bible Continues) is joining the film’s star Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men: Apocalypse) in the story about a hunting expedition gone bad and the tale of survival through dangerous conditions to get home. He is actually the second lead in this picture.

From Deadline: Rothman is comparing this to The Revenant

Quote

In other cases, he apparently is willing to be “creatively reckless” and find urgency in the filmmakers’ daring.

That approach is driving The Solutrean, an unusually difficult film being financed and produced by Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8, a Sony-affiliated company. Directed by Albert Hughes with 20-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee in a lead role, the film is set 20,000 years in the past and tells the story of an Ice Age hunter who is injured and separated from his tribe. Alone, he wounds, then befriends, an attacking wolf. The ensuing adventure, according to people familiar with the film, might recall The Revenant — but its dialogue is in an imagined past language, and The Solutrean’s prehistoric beasts are considerably more challenging than Leo’s grizzly bear.

I legit laughed out loud @ the dude being snatched by the animal by the fire. I can't believe it knew to go after the chief like that, what a smart animal!

So many of the horrible CGI shots got big laughs from me, but that took the cake.

Looks like the half assed love child of THE REVENANT and THE GOOD DINOSAUR.
