Maybe it'll be a situation like Passengers and Rogue One where both films will (most likely) do well.  Not to mention, Holmes and Avatar both succeeded.

But I don't know if a SHERLOCK HOLMES kind of run will be enough for MORTAL ENGINES to have a sequel. I'm sure it'll be vfx heavy and therefore will require a big budget.

This is a directorial debut for a weta guy backed by Peter Jackson, so most likely the crew at weta workshop and vfx will do it all for cheap or nothing. Kinda like District 9.

...what? No, a VFX company isn't going to work for nothing no matter who owns it.

Lulz. Clearly, you have no idea how bad things are in the vfx industry. Nothing doesn't mean they get $0. But they will work overtime and take a cut which may get covered in future projects depending on the profile or pedigree attached behind the project.

Ask the Life of Pi and Sausage Party folks who worked overtime but didn't get paid their fair share.

Why do you think D9 costed so less to make even though it had more complex vfx than Elysium or Chappie? Please don't tell me that the latter 2 had big stars so they got fat paychecks to the tune of 15-40 million. They didn't.

Wait, Stephen Lang? So his movie is going to compete with AVATAR II. :D

Engines = gold (The book has won a Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and was shortlisted for the 2002 Whitbread Award.)

Instruments = shit

A 3 hour long YA movie will be interesting to see for sure. Or maybe PJ will split it into 2 parts per book.

Sounds about right with each getting a 4 hour director's cut.

Oy! Everyone is so old! The characters in the book are teenagers but they cast a 28 years old in good old Hollywood tradition. Flop.
