An animated sh film about singing animals, filled with pop/western references and opening in the Usa right before Chistmas. I was actually worried it would make 400M+ DOM.

OS it necessarily has some (minor) troubles connecting with GA in some countries.

Excellent performance and milestone by SING this weekend!

It has now passed THE CROODS and DESPICABLE ME and only trailing PETS and KUNG FU PANDA among the non-disney original animated films of all time!

600m WW is the next milestone.

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic:  $269,347,740    45.7%
Foreign:  $320,500,000    54.3%

Worldwide:  $589,847,740

MinaTakla you should be a political spin professional!!  Lol

There is nothing "EXCELLENT" about an animated film struggling to make 350 OS from a studio that has been hitting home runs.

Its decent/mediocre but it's definitely not EXCELLENT, no matter how you want it to be.

Just like Moana struggling for 400 OS is decent and not EXCELLENT.

I swear he works for Universal or Illumination given these press releases.

We aren't talking profit margin.

Obviously Illuminations has got a winning formula going in terms of budget.

Im not bagging on Sing.  It's domestic run was very good and it's OS was not a failure by any means, but to label 350 OS EXCELLENT is ridiculous.

Also, when marketing budgets are thrown in, these Illuminations films ARENT half of the Disney budgets.  Their marketing budgets are STAGGERING!!!

Just hearsay talk and it was widely discussed that the Pets and Minions marketing budgets were humongous, coupled with the fact that there is no comparison in terms of how many commercials are run for an Illuminations film as compared to a Disney film.  No hard facts but what I mentioned isn't exactly non factual.

I think Sings domestic run is really good.  A really good OS run to match would have been about 425 giving it a WW of about 700.  It might not even reach 350 OS.

Youre honestly arguing that 350 is a fantastic OS run these days for animation?

Let me just check Pets, Inside Out or Zootopias OS run which are all original animation releases in the last 2 years.

I feel like Moanas OS run has been just OK, and it still has a shot at 400 OS, so how could I personally label Sings struggle to get to 350

as EXCELLENT.

Its just a bit disappointing for me but part of that is because of OS performance of recent ILLUMINATIONS releases.

I think 350-400m O/S is still very good for both films.

But yes Illumination marketing budgets are staggering, that's their formula, less on production and then double down (+) on marketing.  US TV ads alone for Sing were over $56m while Moana's were about $20m (info via ispottv/Variety).   Minions had near $600m in marketing expenses but much of that was provided by promotional partners because of their huge pre-existing popularity.

Thanks, interesting facts. All things considered, I tend to think that putting more money to the budget instead of marketing makes the movies more "rewatchable" ten years from now. Obviously I am generalizing and I am also a Disney shareholder [emoji6]

Weekend update on DHD. 590m WW and 600m WW approaching!

SING

sing3.jpg?w=301&h=202&crop=1
Universal

Illumination and Universal’s Sing continues to have voice overseas with a $9.1M weekend in 40 territories. That lifts the offshore cume to $320.5M and brings global to the tune of $589.8M. Japan, which is the film’s final theatrical release, opened at No. 1 this session with $6.3M at 360 dates. With a national holiday on Monday and two weeks of school break ahead (and before Beauty And The Beast comes dancing in), Japan should help push Sing past $600M worldwide.

@ ttr

Illumination knows that, but they certainly don't mean to produce classics. And they're smart, since there's already a studio that does a much better job with that. They are smartly focused on maximizing the yearly profit and making "stories" that can be easily serialized (just because their films are not about stories, but funny characters and situations).

And this whole talk about the interpretation of Sing's results is just silly. Both that and Moana had a respectable (if unspectacular) run, and that's it. Certainly not mediocre (it's not like we can compare every animated movie to Zootopia, Pets or Inside Out...), certainly not excellent (it's not like we can compare them to IA5 or KFP3...).

Hades what are you talking about?

Im the guy who always defends Peabody and Sherman and even The Lorax.  I'm just speaking factually and I in no way am I bagging on Sing or Pets.  I tend to root for ALL animation and have stated that taking sides is stupid.

Know what your talking about next time!!!

Check your anti-Disney bias and stop assuming others have the same childish  "side-taking" opinions that you have.

Deadline Hollywood

‘Sing’ Gives Voice To $600M At Worldwide Box Office

Illumination and Universal Pictures’ animated let’s-put-on-a-show show Sing has reached the $600M mark at global turnstiles. The current split on the Garth Jennings-directed charmer is $269.7M domestic with $330.3M at the international box office. That makes for a nice round milestone through Sunday. Sing had passed $500M last month.

lat

The movie, featuring the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton and Scarlett Johansson, world premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival in September and began offshore rollout in early December before bowing Stateside later that month. The current weekend tuned up $4.6M in 32 markets, primarily driven by Japan.

The Top 5 international plays are the UK ($35.4M), China ($30.5M), France ($22.9M), Australia ($21.3M) and Germany ($20.2M).

This is Illumination’s 6th fully animated feature and was the company’s second original film of 2016 following the global success of summer blockbuster comedy The Secret Life Of Pets.

The encore, Sing 2, will be released on Christmas Day, 2020. Next up for Chris Meledandri’s Illumination and Universal is the Despicable Me threequel which goes out on June 30.

In all, Illumination’s films have grossed more than $4.6B in worldwide box office. Additional upcoming releases are a newly-imagined version of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which is set for November 2018; The Secret Life Of Pets 2 in July 2019; and Minions 2 in July 2020.
