Agree to disagree! The one after the next one should be more up your alley, though :P.

I love Shane Black. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favourite movies of all time. I’m an unashamed defender of Iron Man 3. And The Nice Guys is no different. This movie is so much fun. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make a delightful pair. Gosling is ridiculously funny and Crowe is the perfect foil to Gosling’s bumbling idiot. Angourie Rice completes the trio and does an incredibly good job; she should have a bright career ahead of her. This movie had some of the best physical comedy I’ve seen in years. Everything from Gosling ending up in the ER from a failed break-in to rolling down the side of a hill had me in stitches. The Nice Guys is an excellent movie and showcases the best of everyone involved. The worst thing about The Nice Guys is how little it made. This one definitely deserved more than 36.3M domestically and I wish more people had gone out to see it.

I know a lot of people on here weren’t huge on this one but seeing Spider-Man and Iron Man together on the big screen was absolutely magical for me. The first Iron Man is legitimately one of my favourite movies of all time. Including Iron Man in a movie is pretty much a guaranteed pass for me. Civil War was no different and it helps that I think it was legitimately a great movie. I loved Winter Soldier and Civil War felt like a natural continuation of that. Yes, there were flaws. The Lagos scenes were admittedly pretty weak, Steve and Sharon was icky but the airport fight and the finale were some of my favourite action scenes in any movie. Robert Downey Jr brought his best and the new cast members, Tom Holland and Chadwick Boseman, were excellent additions to the MCU. I thought the villain was excellent as well. His motivations made sense and his plan seemed fairly logical. Admittedly, I do have a huge Marvel bias. I love the comics and I’m probably not as critical of these movies as I could be but fuck it. I like them. No one can stop me from being a fanboy.

"Say what you want about Mel Gibson, but the son of a bitch knows story structure.” That pretty much sums up my thoughts on him. Hacksaw Ridge was a great movie. The war scenes are among the best seen on the big screen and the story itself is nothing short of amazing. It’s a wonder it took so long to make a movie about Desmond Doss. Andrew Garfield is great and definitely deserves at least a nod for Best Actor. The thing that surprised me most about Hacksaw Ridge was how funny it was. I did not expect to laugh as much as I did, but the scenes in the barracks were absolutely hilarious. This movie was really great at making you feel things. It was funny, it was sad, it was inspirational, it was shocking, et cetera et cetera. All of this was expertly balanced thanks to wonderful editing and a great soundtrack, alongside Gibson’s direction. Honestly, I'd probably say this is one of the best war movies I've ever seen. Regardless, it's one hell of a return for Mel Gibson.

It feels good knowing that my humble little country can produce a film as great as this. Even though it only cost 2.5M, it looks absolutely stunning, mainly because New Zealand is a really beautiful country. Taika Waititi is quickly becoming one of my favourite directors. Boy was great, What We Do in the Shadows was hilarious and Hunt for the Wilderpeople is, in my opinion, one of the best films of 2016. I’ve gushed about before on here. Borderline shilling at times. But if you watch any movie I’ve put on this list, please let it be this one. And then put it on your top 25 so it gets on the big list . The screenplay is hilarious and touching and the characters are delightful. I just think this movie is really, really good. A decent portion of the film was actually shot in the Waitakere Ranges, which is where I live so maybe that familiarity made me like it more. Also, it’s box office run in NZ was pretty amazing. Similar to Your Name, it’s worth looking up.

I read the short story before the movie came out, so I was curious to see if Denis Villeneuve could translate such an interesting story to the big screen. Turns out he could. And it turned out amazing. Amy Adams is superb, as per usual. The production design is equally great. Bradford Young gives us some of the most beautiful shots of the year. Jóhann Jóhannsson’s chilling score is a perfect fit for the film. I can’t really think of anything they did wrong. I don’t want to say too much more because this is something I think people should just experience for themselves, but this was an excellent film. Definitely one of the best sci-fi films of the past 15 years, if not all time. I’m a huge fan of Denis Villeneuve so I’m super excited to see how Blade Runner 2049 turns out. And I hope to god that he gets to make that Dune movie.

It’s soooooo good. I loved Whiplash, and as soon as I heard that this was in the pipeline I’ve had high expectations that this movie not only met, but exceeded. The soundtrack was great. I’ve pretty much had it on loop since I came out of the movie. Emma Stone is phenomenal and Ryan Gosling is no slouch alongside her. The story is surprisingly bittersweet but ever hopeful. Every frame may as well be sold individually because they look so good. Except that one shot of the mould I guess. All in all, this was my favourite movie of 2016. It did everything right for me. I’m looking forward to seeing it again this evening.
