Force Awakens jumped 23.7% on the same Tuesday last year. Seems the Discount Tuesday effect keeps getting stronger and stronger as each month goes by.

Discount Tuesday is definitely getting bigger and bigger.  AMC Premier Stubs members get $5 off on Tuesdays.  at&t customers (i think other phone carriers also) have Take a Friend for free Tuesdays also.  More and more theaters and retailers are embracing the concept.

I rarely go to concessions in the first place. If I went more often I would go to the movies much less.

I skip the concession stand and use the money I saved to go to a restaurant afterward.

Interesting thing to me is the local Regal has not adapted to the market. They still charge full price $10 on Tuesday, meanwhile the newer theater is charging $5.40 on Discount Tuesday. It is run by a much smaller company and serves alcohol plus full menu of food while Regal has the basic popcorn, candy, soda.

So Regal doesn't have a good reason to keep charging full price on Tuesday. They are getting their ass kicked in attendance and concessions in general since the newer theater has better amenities. One would think they would try to be more competitive on the ticket price.

Hidden Figures is doing terrific. Making up for that weather. $100m+ is alive, folks!

Nice to know Rogue One has a shot at $550m+. Worth noting that if Sing plays like Tintin from here on out it gets to $261m, which is entirely possible, as is $500m+ worldwide. I'm sad it'll beat Moana, but oh well. They're still both major successes.

Yeah, it varies here in the Northern VA/DC area as well.   One Regal theater across town has 2D tickets for $5.75 all day while another has them for regular price of $12 in the evenings.  Both have reserved leather seating and upgraded concessions with alcohol.  The full price Regal just happens to be in a new town center that always has heavy visitor traffic.

My local Regal generously gives us the first show of the day (week days only, no Holidays) discounted to a mere $12.  :P

Funny thing is the Regal applied for alcohol license around a year ago and was shut down by the city council. They used the morality excuse that people should have the option of an alcohol-free theater for their kids. But I strongly suspect that what really happened is the city council was bribed by the other theater.

It puts Regal at a serious disadvantage. They bought this theater in early 2013 when it was the only one in town and was usually jam-packed. Then the other theater Cinergy opened with better amenities and seems to do a lot stronger business even outside of Discount Tuesday. Would not surprise me if the Regal shuts down, which would make me a bit sad because Regal is 30 seconds from my apartment and they converted two of the screens to RPX and LieMAX. So we went from having zero large format screens to three of them pretty much overnight (Cinergy has their EPIC format).

I've never seen a major theater chain location shut down.  I take that back, a Cinemark shut down because the mall itself closed.  It was actually the last tenant to close also. I'm guessing it takes a lot for corporate to shutter a location.

I used to work for a small 4 theater that was owned by United Artists back in the 90's.  And a few years later it completely shut down here.

Although I only lasted there a month.  I decided to quit when they fired me.
