The Academy doesn't normally go for Todd Haynes, so I'm a bit reluctant to say it'll win this soon. It needs to have a lot going in its favor.

this sounds way more oscary than what he's been doing. there's a plot about a classical movie star, or something!

right. that just seems like something the academy will jerk to hard. so did la la land tbf and that didn't go all the way. still, even if he don't win i think this will be the film that finally gets haynes into major academy recognition like grand budapest did broke Anderson through.

Good Christ, Adapted Screenplay is barren this year. All the top BP contenders are original, AND there are creative films like GO, Sacred Deer, and Three Billboards that the writing branch normally goes for. Goddamn.

The Disaster Artist is probably A24's #1. It has an excellent release date and is going wide before Christmas. Sacred Deer is going to be too niche, and Lean on Pete doesn't have much buzz right now.

Is Molly's Game adapted? That could happen. And based on buzz alone Call Me by Your Name would be considered a more than worthy winner I think. Especially if they remember that they never gave James Ivory an Oscar back in the day and he's turning 90 next year.

Yeah. I had it as my alt until I realized Last Flag Flying was by Linklater. I don't trust STX to handle Molly's Game well.

I definitely think it has a better shot than Blade Runner. (If it's good, mind you.) Plus Sorkin's name is still big. If the movie's good enough they'll notice, regardless of the distributor I think.

Sorkin didn't work out for Steve Jobs (unfortunately).

I will say Sundance seems to have produced a healthy list of contenders this year.

Call Me by Your Name is really the only thing from Sundance that has a really great shot this year at becoming a major contender (and not just because the studio's holding onto it until the end of the year). The Big Sick's only shot is a lone Original Screenplay nom. Everything else will be either too small or too under the radar to really catch fire.

Wonderstruck is getting good enough reviews and all but nothing that screams Best Picture winner, and I agreed with Coolio that it had a good shot to win. At this point reviews look ehhhh for a nomination.

If Wonderstruck was by a more Oscar-friendly director, I'd say Wonderstruck would maybe still be in contention for a nomination, but there's just way too many contenders for a Todd Haynes film with mixed reception to stand out.
