It might not be the film you are thinking of, there are other zealots of certain specific films out there. Star Trek Beyond for example.
chasmmi
Spoiler 64th - Hunt For the Wilderpeople - 81/100 Yep the winner of the coveted 'Newest chasmmi enemy' award is... @AABATTERY sorry So last year people raved about a New Zealand comedy named What We do in the shadows. My review? Meh it was funny in places, 72/100 and 58th place. So a year later and an even more raved about New Zealand comedy! And my review? 81/100 - Good, but nothing amazing and 64th place. So they are getting better at least, I think. Yeah this has some good stuff in it, but also some dragged out nothing stuff. There are more pedophile jokes that I mentioned before that I love so much so that's also a contributor to the score. I really want to like this as I am desperate for Thor to be great this year. However, it's just not my comedy style, (Flight of the Conchords also is a thing that I rate as blah at best )
chasmmi
Spoiler 63rd - The Boy - 82/100 And now on to something that should have been shit but actually wasn't. Yes, this was a decent little horror film. There was creepiness, it built up to an ending that wasn't necessarily the only possible way the film could end and it did a good job of staying horrific despite not having a lot of different characters to fuck around. If you like horror, I feel this is an underrated little film that could please the right audience quite nicely.
chasmmi
Spoiler 62nd - Ghostbusters - 83/100 This film had the Oscar best picture envelope keepers of trailer makers didn't it. I had no ill will towards this film. I like Ghostbusters (even love the sequel). So when this trailer came out I like the rest of the world went: "What the total fuck?!" This film was being directed by a great comedy director and included great female comedians (mostly), so how could it look so bad? Especially seeing as it wasn't bad at all. Hell even some of the jokes that bomb in the trailer are actually funny when returned back to context in the film. It is baffling. McCarthy, Hemsworth and University lecturer woman are all good to great in this. The big contrast comes from the two (SNL?) actresses. For me, the subway worker is brilliant, everything she says is funny and is on point. I get the argument that it maybe would have been nice to not have the Black ghostbuster be the less educated one again, but that is more a comment for hiring and casting, it doesn't impact film quality. She is damn funny and got the most laughs out of me. On the flip side, gun-licking woman consistently became a void where comedy went to die. There was a funny moment or two, but in general she just didn't fit in with the other three and seemed to be a product of Phoebe Boufet-itis (The disease that compels comedy writers to add one "zany" or "wacky" character to their show or film to appeal to a demographic that certainly isn't me. Overall though this was a good film with potential for a great sequel that we will never see.

chasmmi
Is it wrong to like over 60 films a year? Spoiler 61st - The Shallows - 83/100 Quite possibly the best Shark film to have ever been made. (Deep Blue Sea is maybe just a little too silly to push this down to second and Sharknado... just no.) For a film involving pretty much just one actress on a rock and a shark, this is a lot better than it could have become. There are far less instances of manufactured peril than I expected and everything was kind of as believable as it could have been. There were some silly bits, the drunk guy on the beach was stupid for example. But overall this is a nice little film that I enjoyed more than i could have.
chasmmi
Spoiler 60th - Fantastic Beasts - 84/100 Two films randomly spliced into one it felt like. One was charming, one was bloated. Parts of this film were so good. The beasts were pretty fantastical in general and the quartet of good guys were all good in their role and I enjoyed them being on screen. However, then a film titled that it was going to be a fun romp around new York chasing magical monsters, became a weird Harry Potter, Voldermort chasing wannabe. It was lacking and brought down the film when that plot kicked in (even if Farrell is good). Then you have the ending and... Spoiler my exact inner monologue was: "Don't be Depp, please don't turn into Depp, please. Oh Shit! Okay, it's Depp, but don't have a silly voice, don't have a silly voic...@ And then he opened his mouth and I audibly said "Oh Fuck off!" as it became clear that Depp may go forth and kill this franchise to death.
chasmmi
Spoiler 59th - La La Land - 84/100 Well this was a film that a lot of people liked. Me? This film was not targeting me as its core audience. There was a lot of positive stuff in this film, the songs and set pieces are crisp and beautifully put together. The lead actors also do a good job at stuff. However, the ending was awful in my eyes. I hated everything it suggested and really just turned me off the whole film. This film was never going to be a top 10 film for me but then again my top 20 contains a few songs that I would never expect to be top 10 or top 20 films for me, so that is no excuse. The 6th best musical of the year.
chasmmi
Spoiler 58th - London has Fallen - 84/100 Gerard Butler had one hell of a 2016 didn't he. He specialised in silliness that actually turned out to be a bit of fun. And almost nothing epitomised stupid awfulness that was actually enjoyable as a piece of silly explodey fun. This is not a good film, not at all. But it is a fun film. London's population is 95% bad guys and all of them die in convoluted and impossible ways. It's great whilst also being rubbish. If it is ever on your TV, give it a whirl

chasmmi
Spoiler 57th - The Boss - 86/100 The Best Melissa McCarthy film of 2016 This film was in my opinion much better than most seem to have given it credit for. It is nothing groundbreaking or genre defining. However it is pretty funny overall and certainly less mean spirited than most of the comedies at the bottom of this list. It's the kind of comedy I am happy to put on in the background when I am doing things like labouring over top 90 films lists of the year that has since ended.
chasmmi
Spoiler 56th - Why Him - 86/100 Two comedies in a row that I was expecting a lot less from. Yeah, this was silly and stupid in parts, but like the Boss just before, this was actually a nice little comedy that I had a lot of fun watching. It could have been better of course, but it was overall enjoyable and actually surprisingly well meaning throughout. However I think it does say a lot about comedy in 2016 in that this is one of the top rated US outright comedies on my list and it still only comes in at the mid 50s.
chasmmi
Spoiler 55th - Swiss Army Man - 86/100 Well this was a unique one, but everyone already knew that. Yeah this is a really whimsical and imaginative film. the two leads are excellent and its overall a fun adventure. So why graded so low? Well, I was not a big fan of the ending, I would have preferred it to resolve itself in a different way. However I fully understand how this can find itself in other peoples' top 20's or even top 10's. It's a film that should be watched by as many people as possible, if not for nothing more than inspiring the making of more films like this one.

Hide contents 82nd - The Neon Demon - 63/100 It's like La La Land but with models and with the singing. Some people really really loved this. I don't see it. In fact I fell asleep twice at least trying to get through to the end. The is a chore of a film. Pretty people bitch about being pretty, but not as pretty as person x, Keanu Reeves I think just found himself in the centre of a studio set while trying to get some secret rest at a motel park it seems. Such a random casting. I was hoping for some fucked up insanity when watching this. What i got was pretty girls and the hidden hardships of being pretty I get that everyone has different taste and this film is not for everyone. However, this is not just a film about pretty people and their problems. It goes way deeper than that. But this is your list, so I will leave it at that.

But it was just not what it was aiming to be. There was good build up and suspense as the band is holing up in the room, but then everything sort of happened haphazardly. People randomly die, or turn on other people or just... by the end the film felt a little bit like a TV show that has gone on 4 seasons too long and the cast is all wonky and confused. Shame really. We pretty much agree on this one.

For me, this film fell a fair bit in the middle. There was some cool stuff, some creepy stuff and some stuff that did a half decent job of pulling off clever. The film also built up suspense well and really did a good job of making the film feel like it was going to a dark place. It is a shame that it did not quite live up to the expectation that it was building. But it's a good horror for people who are a fan of the genre. It definitely gets better on subsequent viewings.
