Who is your favourite director, and what order would you rank their movies?

Recommended Posts

Saw this topic on reddit and I figured I'd steal it here, curious to see how this forum skews.

While it's hard to choose between directors whose filmography I love (Nolan, Fincher, Wright just missed out), my all time favourite is Richard Linklater.

1. Dazed And Confused
2. Before Sunset
3. Before Sunrise
4. A Scanner Darkly
5. Before Midnight
6. Waking Life
7. School Of Rock
8. Everybody Wants Some!!
9. Slacker
10. Bernie
11. Me And Orson Welles
12. Boyhood
13. Fast Food Nation
14. Bad News Bears
15. The Newton Boys

Still haven't seen SubUrbia or Tape, so this order might change when I get round to it.

The first really hard choice is to choose the director... there are so many. I would say that among my favorites are Hitchcock, John Ford, Scorsese or Spielberg. But if I have to choose today, I would pick Billy Wilder. He gave us masterpieces in every genre he touched. My list:

1. The Apartment (my third favorite film ever)

2. One, two, three

3. Witness for the prosecution

4. Irma la Douce

5. Double Indemnity

6. Some like it hot

7. Sunset Boulevard

8. The private life of Sherlock Holmes

9. Sabrina

10. Love in the afternoon

11. Kiss me, stupid

I would have to think about it, but it is safe to say that 4 or 5 would be in my top 100.

How do you think this list will look after Thor 3?

I have no idea. I'll be happy if it's above What We Do in the Shadows, but I'm feeling insanely optimistic and gonna say it's going to be on top .

Terrence Malick, though his post Tree of Life Stuff is a little too far out there.

  1. The Thin Red Line
  2. The Tree of Life
  3. Badlands
  4. Days of Heaven
  5. The New World (I need to rewatch it though)

Still need to finish Knight of Cups and haven't seen To the Wonder

Francis Ford Coppola is amazing too though, although Peggy Sue Got Married and Jack are not good.

  1. Apocalypse Now
  2. The Godfather
  3. The Godfather Part II
  4. The Rainmaker
  5. Peggy Sue Got Married
  6. Jack

I've only seen 3 Sidney Lumet films But I loved every one of them

  1. 12 Angry Men
  2. Dog Day Afternoon
  3. Serpico

I'd swap Tree Of Life and Badlands, and put To The Wonder in before The New World. Haven't seen Knight Of Cups either.
