I'm finding it really hard to argue that Fast 8 was a "disappointment" and a "Skyfall" at 1 bil worldwide. The falloff in Box Office from Avengers to Ultron was far more severe in US grosses than it was between Fast 7 and Fast 8.

Avengers 2 OW was only 8% smaller than Avengers 1.

F8 is 33% smaller than F7 in terms of domestic OW.

Why would a DOM drop be more relevant than a WW drop?

The argument seemed to be based on the level of drop in US grosses. It wasn't as comparably large between fast 7/8 as it was between Avengers/Ultron

Not at the budgets that modern blockbusters require. Good luck making money off a 200 mil movie with the US gross alone. And don't give me that "But Deadpool" stuff. That's like saying all horror movies can gross what THE MOVIE THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED did.

The US gross (not the international gross) determines how much TV networks pay to buy the rights to the movie. Thats some real money. Add in home video and other revenue streams and that is where studios made their money before international markets expanded so much.

A movie that is a domestic hit but a flop worldwide can thus be more profitable than a domestic flop but international hit.

Even with international grosses, theaterical runs rarely break even for studios. But the domestic revenue streams post-theatrical is where the money is at.

Not if the movie is one like Power Rangers where it basically dies so badly internationally that there's no way it'll be profitable. Also, cord cutting is killing the "long tail" for most movies. DVD is a pittiance compared to what it was and TV will soon decline to meet it.

Only if you go by gross and not by % which is more indicative because the numbers we're dealing with are so much larger.   AOU opened to 8% less than Avengers and finished around 26-27% less domestic.

Wasn't talking opening weekend, was talking overall if Fast 8 is around 230 mil

Even *if* F8 makes $230M (which I highly doubt) this would mark a 35% decline from F7.

AOU declined by 26.5% vis-a-vis the original Avengers movie.

Kong might end up just about crossing 170M depending on the dollar theater boost. Power Rangers will most likely fall a bit short of 90M in the end. Logan won't catch DOFP and X3.

F8 was gonna hit Kong hard. Hopefully it stabilizes on the lower end now.

Why are you using Power Rangers as an example?  Its not doing well enough domestically anyways.

"cord cutting" has yet to significantly impact how much FX will pay for hit movies and services like Netflix and Amazon Prime and Hulu are picking up the slack.

As for DVD, yes sales are down (although Suicide Squad made $100 million) but itd be interesting to see iTunes/Amazon purchases and rentals.

Lost World (229) declined 36% from JP (357). F8 is looking at something similar.

TF4 (245) dropped 30% too from TF3 (352).

POTC4 dropped about 22% but it had 3D while POTC3 did not, else the drop could have been 30% or more.

Maybe. My guess is that F8 won't crack $220M DOM.
