What about Baby Driver? Is it getting a release here?

Baby Driver was previously scheduled for 6 September.

But today Sony Pictures Indonesia announced that they will release it earlier.

I suspect it will be a week from now, 23 August, right before American Made (25 August, Indonesia getting a super early release).

Or, American Made will be delayed to play day and date with the US, we'll see.

Dammit, I actually had it on my spreadsheet all along, hahahaha.

But many thanks anyway!

With a multiplier of 2.69x, BATB is the leggiest major release in Indonesia so far this year. Limited screen numbers have cut legs brutally short.

F8 was 2.27x, GOTG2 2.26x. And those two had breathing space.

End of May until early July it gets really brutal.

POTC5 1.61x, WW 1.79x, Mummy 1.80x, TF5 1.64x, DM3 1.74x, SHC 1.82x, Apes3 1.56x

Yeah, legs depend on WOM to some extent, but release timing is the most important factor. I hate how fast movies disappear from the theaters here because they have to make way for new movies. Thankfully, CGV tends to play movies a little bit longer, since they have a lot of screens in one theater.

I just came back from watching Annabelle: Creation. Damn, the theater was still 75% full.

Screams and funny quips adorned the screening.

And at the very end, there was this group of about 25 people taking a group photo in front of the screen, holding a big banner that says "Nobar Annabelle: Creation - PT H********* Indonesia". So very Indonesian, hahahaha! They asked for the theater staff to wait until the very final moment in the post credits scene to take the picture.

If this movie had some more breathing space it would have been HUGE.

Baby Driver confirmed to (finally) open 30 August on CGV.

I didn't bother to post the update for Indonesian BO chart because last weekend Warner Bros again decided not to report their numbers, despite the obvious success of Annabelle 2.

The reported champ? Emoji Movie, 326k :D

Last week, beside Annabelle 2's stellar $1.5m second weekend despite necessary screen count drops, was also the release of Cars 3.

It grossed $900k, about 340k admissions. It certainly dwarfed the lifetime gross of Cars 2 ($600k something), but still a lot smaller than DM3's $3.48m opening.

Latest Pixar Indonesian grosses: Dory $4.6m, Dinosaur $2.5m, IO $2.5m.

We should have the numbers tomorrow night Indonesia time, but I won't hold my breath for Annabelle's numbers as WB Indonesia somehow stopped publishing BO numbers since Dunkirk.

INDONESIA BOX OFFICE RECAP - JANUARY 2017

OK, I'm going to try to recap the month of January. Whenever obtainable, data is shown for the movie's Indonesia opening date, final gross and opening weekend, along with estimated admissions. Different exchange rates were used for each movie depending on when they actually opened.

I also show percentages of Indonesia's gross to international total and worldwide total.

3roOTm8.png

(sorry, I don't know how to resize the embedded image - Hollywood wide release only, by the way).

  • Underworld: Blood Wars opened more than month earlier than the US, in the end of November 2016. It was a solid hit, opening at $1.41m (552k adm) in 419 screens (31% of total).
Its final reported gross was $2.70m (1.05m adm). However by that time it was still playing in 190 screens, so there could be some more dollars left unreported. Indonesia was one of the top 10 international markets for Underworld 5.
  • The Bye Bye Man opened day-and-date with the US, grossing $104k (40k adm).
  • Monster Trucks opened 2 weeks later than the US, opened to an okay $435k (166k adm), ended up with $766k (296k adm).
  • xXx: The Return of Xander Cage was the second blockbuster of 2017 (The Great Wall opened earlier on 4 January), opening at $2.59m (985k adm) and finishing strongly at $5.08m (1.94m adm). It opened in the customary Wednesday slot, 2 days ahead of American release.
  • The next blockbuster came soon after that, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, 3 days earlier than the US. Milla Jovovich thanked Indonesian audiences in her Facebook page for making RE6 the #1 movie in Indonesia at that time. It opened solidly at $2.58m (983m), tad lower than xXx. Screen count was 530, a commanding 35% of total. It then legged out (by 2017 Indonesian standard) to $6.09m (2.32m adm).
  • Split screened almost a month later in mid February, yet still managed to open at $1.10m (418k adm) and finish at a respectable $2.14m (815k adm).
  • Sleepless, A Dog's Purpose, and Gold screened but grosses were not reported, while The Founder and The Resurrection of Gavin Stone did not screen at all. (The Founder came close though).

Reported total gross for these US wide-release movies was close to $16.9m, representing over 6.46m tickets sold.

Now for Indonesian movies.

ltvRRFu.png

Indonesia hit an all-time high attendance record of 36.5 million something (actually 37.2m by my reckoning). Obviously people were curious whether that was a fluke or not. Luckily, January 2017 gave a good sign. Total attendance was almost 1.76m, way ahead of 2016, fueled by two solid hits: Promise and the truly awful Security Ugal-ugalan (which will spawn a sequel, sadly).

Other movies screened during January 2017 (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Korean, European, US non wide releases, US wide releases released early or late, other movies).

Fellow Asians can check whether your county's movies got screened in Indonesia here:

  1. The Great Wall ($3.71m)
  2. Ballerina (Leap! in the US)
  3. Arrival ($1.17m)
  4. A Gift
  5. Unspoken
  6. Live by Night ($190k)
  7. Master
  8. La La Land ($243k OW only)
  9. Patriots Day
  10. Kaabil
  11. Hacker
  12. Kung Fu Yoga

As BOTH The Dark Tower AND American Made claims to be the #1 movie in Indonesia last weekend, Annabelle: Creation sets another milestone: $9.2m (about 3.5m adm .... more than Wonder Woman and Beauty and the Beast!). Annabelle is also one the leggiest this year at 2.36x, only BATB is better (2.69x).

Dark Tower probably was #1 for the whole Indonesian 5-day weekend, while American Made #1 over FSS.

  1. The Fate of the Furious (aka The Fast and Furious 8 in Indonesia) - $19,329,335 - roughly 7,344,000 admissions, an Indonesian all-time record
  2. Spider-Man: Homecoming - $12,333,268 - roughly 4,705,000 admissions
  3. Transformers: The Last Knight - $11,712,577 - roughly 4,451,000 admissions
  4. Annabelle: Creation - $9,200,000 - roughly 3,502,000 admissions
  5. Beauty and the Beast - $9,157,840 - roughly 3,491,000 admissions
  6. Wonder Woman - $8,600,000 - roughly 3,273,000 admissions
  7. The Mummy - $7,956,529 - roughly 3,025,000 admissions
  8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 - $7,683,449 - roughly 2,919,000 admissions
  9. Logan (aka Logan: The Wolverine in Indonesian posters) - $6,195,583 - roughly 2,365,000 admissions
  10. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter - $6,090,864 - roughly 2,320,000 admissions

INDONESIA BOX OFFICE RECAP - FEBRUARY 2017

Data for February 2017 US wide releases:

FlO0Efj.png

  • As mentioned in a previous post, The Great Wall screened early in 4 January and became the first blockbuster of 2017. The OW was a solid $1.951m (751k adm), while the final gross was $3.708m, about 1.428m admissions.
  • John Wick: Chapter Two came in next in 8 February, a customary Wednesday opening. It grossed $1.388m, about 529k admissions.
  • The LEGO Batman Movie followed on Friday 10 February. It didn't really break out and ended with a meh $1.4m (533k adm).
  • Rings might be a failure everywhere else, but in Indonesia it still did OK. OW was $1.123m (429k adm) when it opened on 22 February, while the finish was $2.157m (823k adm).
  • Finally, Get Out screened late in 7 April, opening at $310k (117k adm) and petered out quickly to $470k (177k adm).
  • The Space Between Us had limited run on 1 April, while Collide already screened way back in August 2016. No screenings for Fifty Shades Darker (didn't pass censorship like its predecessor), A Cure for Wellness (advertised in January but pulled back), Fist Fight and Rock Dog.

Reported total gross for these movies was $9.124m, representing 3.49m tickets sold.

Indonesian movies:

Mq3zzMN.png

February 2016 yielded a solid 2m admissions, so it was a challenge for February 2017 to come up with comparable result. As we can see, eventually it made more than 2.3m admissions, so all good and 2017 still running ahead of 2016 by a whopping 62%.

Running cume for February 2017 was 4.078m admissions, way ahead from February 2016's 2.514m.

Other movies screened during February 2017 (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Korean, European, US non wide releases, US wide releases released early or late, other movies).

  1. Raees
  2. Bleed for This
  3. Don't Knock Twice
  4. Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back
  5. Museum
  6. Guardians
  7. Man Down
  8. Lion
  9. Sword Art Online (special screening)
  10. Silence
  11. Doraemon the Movie: Nobita and the Birth of Japan

(note: plus Sleepless, Split and A Dog's Purpose from January)

Today it's been revised that Dark Tower's $800k take was actually #3.

American Made was #1, should be more than $1m.

While #2 must be Annabelle 2.

Indonesian box office juggernaut Jangkrik Boss 2 began its run yesterday, breaking the opening day record for Indonesian movies with 300k admissions.

Previous record was set last year by Jangkrik Boss 1, 270k admissions. As it expands massively into even more theaters today (some locations only offer this movie, some shows start as early as 9:30 am), we sure will hear a lot more from this movie.

And Jangkrik Boss 2 is already at 1 million adm in 2.5 days! Wow. Is it possible to get 2m in 4 days?

Warkop DKI really is a strong brand and has a strong connection with Indonesians. But I don't think this will be bigger than the first one. I mean, Jangkrik Boss 1 is by far the biggest local movie of all time, so it will be hard to top that. Also, most people say it's not as funny as the first one. I personally think they're about the same. 50% jokes were laugh-out-loud funny and 50% fell flat. Anyway, it's exciting and interesting to see how big it's gonna be.
