I hear that EuropaCorp will be hurt the most with this transaction given the fact that they acquired the James Ponsoldt-directed title for $7M-$8M and are on the hook for at least a $22M domestic P&A spend. Presumably tax credits plus foreign sales covered the $18M estimated production cost of this Tom Hanks-Emma Watson feature which was financed completely by Image Nation Abu Dhabi. STX walks away with a distribution fee thanks to their new EuropaCorp distribution deal.

EuropaCorp might have a very bumpy year.

For anyone thinking of watching the first Bahubali out of interest or just to see what the hype is about, it is available to rent on Youtube at the link below

I would recommend it for sure, it is a pretty simple story with good special effects for Indian standards i.e. they don't look like they were made in MS Paint. Not as epic a scope as the second movie, but all the money they spent is onscreen for sure.

Quick question, not sure if you know the answer, but do you know if there's a reason why Bollywood movies tend to be so long?

I was looking some up last year and a lot of the ones I saw had fairly long running times (150 min+), especially when compared to usual Hollywood stuff.

$17-$19 million for Fast 8. North of $10 million for Latin Lover is pretty good for a debut of a foreign film, while The Circle looked unappealing either way. But foreign films are doing well for a sleepy weekend!

Bollywood movies cater to all ages and have to be literally every genre at the same time. Most movie watching is a family event, the entire extended family heads out so they want value for money. Also, Bollywood movies have intermissions, so instead of one 150 minute session it is 2 75 minute sessions with a 15 minute break (which is when theaters make bank on concession sales).

If you removed the songs out, movie lengths would go drastically down. With new filmmakers who are more influenced by foreign movies coming in, the movie lengths have started going down a lot. I remember sitting through this torturous hellhole of a movie called "LOC Kargil" which was (and I am not joking) 4 hours 15 minutes long with 2 intermissions. Why the filmmaker thought anyone wanted a 250 minute long war movie, we may never know. Most recent movies are within 2 hour 15 to 30 minutes at max. Only very few movies can get away with a 3 hour runtime now, they need to be one of the superstar movies or a known franchise.

To be fair, Bahubali is not a bollywood movie. Bollywood refers to the Bombay film industry which makes films in Hindi. The Indian Film industry has many 'woods', Bahubali being a product of the Telugu industry.

Deadline says industry projection for F8 is $230M but a $20M 3rd weekend with a $193M cumulative should allow F8 to speed through $240M-$250M.

I don't know about that. FF6 had a 19.6m 3rd weekend, putting it roughly 10m ahead of F8 at the same point in time, yet it only finished with 238m while having summer weekdays. Even if F8 would somehow get a 20m weekend, it would need some excellent drops over the next weeks to catch up to FF6, much less top it by up to 10m. With GotG 2 coming up, I don't really see that happening.

Another bomb for Europa Corp

Spoiler

Originally, test scores for The Circle were low. A reshoot was ordered four months ago and the ending changed, putting a positive light on Watson’s protagonist in the end. Test scores fell even further.
