Box Office: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2' Zooms Past $500 Million

https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2017/05/11/box-office-guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-has-crossed-500-million-worldwide/#53d79e863734

After around 17 days of worldwide release, Walt Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has now halfway to the fabled $1 billion milestone. The James Gunn sci-fi sequel has earned $175.9 million after six days of domestic release, meaning it will enter its second weekend of domestic play with around $184m.

So, yeah, it’ll cross $200m domestic on Friday with a likely over/under $60m weekend and $245m ten-day domestic total. At which point it will zoom past Logan ($225m) and Fate of the Furious (around $210m) to become the year’s second-biggest domestic earner behind Beauty and the Beast ($488m-and-counting)......

Expected drop on Wednesday of 39-40% depending on actuals. I think we need to remind people every week that Cheap Tuesday is a major force now.

Probably a 5-10% drop today for 6.7-7M going into the weekend. The drop will mainly be because of screen loss to accommodate 3 different movies having previews tonight.

Looks like stripe, from the Tuesday thread, was correct about likely seeing 35-40% drops to correct for the huge Tuesday increases.

On face value, not a great drop for Guardians, but in the context of it's Tuesday increase (and the yet-to-be-known Thursday number), it's basically impossible to know. It all depends. As baumer usually says, we gotta wait and see, as we don't really know until the Friday/weekend rolls around.

Peace,

Mike

-9% on Thu will give 6.75 and 182.75 (176 + 6.75) total.

If it has Civil War's FSS % in 2nd weekend, then it gets

16.2 (+140%) + 26.4 (+63%) + 17.4 (-34%) = 60.0

So 182.75 + 60 = 242.75 cume

This isn't making $1B WW imo. It's still on track to do around $330M domestically though. I don't see it heading to an extreme number in any direction.

But of course, there will be plenty of overreactions.

If this Wednesday number really is that bad of a dive, shall we expect Thur to be somewhere around this figure if not higher? Like 5-10% higher?

I get the preview showing and all but hey, we're talking about law averages here right?

Great Sunday, horrible Monday. Surprising Tuesday, "shitty" Wednesday...

This is a definite possibility. A 59% drop for the second weekend, essentially, which would be pretty standard, I think. Civil War, Avengers 2, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 all dropped between 58.4 - 59.5% in their second weekend. I'm hoping for a somewhat better hold (56-57%).

Peace,

Mike

Thursday will most likely drop 5-10% from Wednesday. That's just how May weekdays go. Nothing surprising or special about that
