BOT: THE REVISITING -- now up, 1987! MINI-EXTENSION, deadline is tonight, June 25!

Recommended Posts

Anyway, here's my top 10

1 Empire of the Sun
2 The Untouchables
3 Extreme Prejudice
4 Broadcast News
5 Maurice
6 Near Dark
7 Evil Dead 2
8 Spaceballs
9 Raising Arizona
10 Full Metal Jacket

I don't think 7-10 should be anywhere near a "best of" list, but hey what can I do.

I will give Enfants and Cambodia a try, but the rest is or sounds terrible.

Maybe I should put Extreme Prejudice two times on my list ?

If youve seen Planes Trains and you think its terrible then its time to stop watching movies. Maybe take up lawn bowling or something.

Since you have Lethal Weapon & Fatal Attraction high up I'd add Stakeout & No Way Out to your to watch list.

Looking at your lists 1987 had so many good comedies of all different types.   Sadly now missing.

Edit: Since this seems to be ranked by B.O  then might I also suggest adding the riveting Demme directed Spalding Grey monologue Swimming To Cambodia & the Michael Caine/Brosnan Forsythe spy thriller - The Fourth Protocol

I'm pretty sure his list is ordered by Domestic Gross rather than how much he liked them.

1987 is that bad, yes.

You are such a film snob sometimes. I feel sorry for you in the sense that you can't watch a movie and just enjoy it. You have to look for things that normal people don't look for you have to find flaws in everything. I'm not sure who is worse you or Lisa.

There's nothing to be sorry about. I like movies for different reasons, and that's ok?

I haven't seen PTA, but I have read its synopsis and it sounds appalling. I imagine the plot beats are telegraphed from a mile away and Hughes doesn't  seem like the kind of director who can deliver them in an entertaining, not totally obvious way.

It's not ideal, but when I have so little to go by (and what's there is telling me to not see it), reading a synopsis might help me getting off the fence. I find that directors and reviews are the best, most valuable ways to discover movies, hence why I do filmography marathons quite often.

If I chose to watch 25 films and couldn't like even 10 of them, then I would stop watching films. I watch as many films as I do because I enjoy almost all of them. for example I've watched 29 films from 1987 and I'd be OK with putting 27 on this list, which is a pretty normal ratio, 2016 would be 39 out of 42.

How do you know it's brainless?

the way people talk about it, the reviews from both profissional critics and casual cinephiles.
