New Betting Rule

It has come to my attention that a user recently foolishly accepted a bet where he would donate $1,000 to the site. It's no surprise this user has told the person he made the bet with he doesn't intend to pay.

We are a not for profit site that runs on donations. We use these donations solely to pay for site expenses and do not profit from it. For this reason we allow, although do not encourage, bets between users that involve donations to the site.

The $1,000 bet is a significant sum that while paid for a significant portion of next year's server cost (I believe we are already paid for this year), is too large for us to ask for any user especially when they can't afford it.

I am therefore placing the following restriction on bets involving money donated to the site from this moment forward (it does not affect current bets):

A cap of $100 is instituted. This is a hard rule.

I also encourage users do make sure both sides are good for the money. Getting into a bet you have no intention of paying if you lost (like we believe the user who bet $1,000 did) is a douchebag move. I would check on the user's reputation with the community at large.

Users entering into bets involving money must also be at least 21 years old.

I'd actually support temporary bans for users who make the bets and don't pay.  If they wanted to bet fake money, they could always head to the casino.  That's where you make bets for pride.  If you make it for real, you best be good for it since you should always plan to lose...

Fundamentally, this is not a place for real bets. If it's just for donations of small amounts, for fun, that's okay. But we don't want to encourage anything more substantial than that.

So I can't bet my firstborn child?

It's a good thing I never see the point of gambling, why waste your money on potentially getting nothing when you can put it to some good use.

Like buying margaritas.

It's like playing video games, watching sports, joining box office clubs except when you win, you get cash.

What's not to love?

But seriously, money increases the thrill of winning something.

It feels so good people get highly addicted to it, unfortunately.

Video games you are at least getting enjoyment in playing a game/story and are entertained for X amount of hours depending. Sports I don't gamble so I watch for pure fun and entertainment, box office I do for fun as well.

I'd rather put my money in booze than gambling. Tequila actually guarantees one a good time vs. gambling to me just isn't fun.

I didn't start any of this.  He offered the bet, I accepted.

And now, here we are.

Yeah, he was being a condescending douchebag and now, he chickened out. He lost what little respect he had left. Always prickly and ready for fight, smfh.
