CAYOM - New Franchise Rights Thread

Recommended Posts

For the sake of convenience, I've started a new franchise rights thread for this new CAYOM reboot. Here are the old rules:

1. No claiming franchise rights for any property that's had a theatrical movie in the past five years.

2. Claiming franchise rights for a property with a future film scheduled is only allowed if you announce your intent in the Part 1 / Advance Schedule thread at least one year to the date before the real one comes out.
3. Some franchises are already owned by players from the old CAYOM. They have exclusive rights to make the films and decide on their own what to do with them. Make sure a franchise you want to adapt is not already owned by someone else, so be kind to ask first. Also, you can ask the owner of a franchise if he/she could sell it to you. If a franchise is owned by a player unlikely to return, you can ask others for permission to take over the rights. For Year 1, previously held franchise rights are reserved to those who had them in CAYOM 2.0, but if not claimed by the end of the first year they become available.
4. You own exclusive franchise rights to films you make up on your own.
5. Some franchises shouldn't be used altogether. Major classic franchises like Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park should be off-limits completely, and some franchises that suffered from overexposure in the old CAYOM should also be off-limits unless permission is granted.
6. You cannot reserve the rights to classic material in the public domain, like the Bible. You can still make films based off said material and the rights are reserved automatically to your particular interpretation, but others are equally free to make their own. Public domain material created by the internet still needs rights reserving.

I'll go ahead and start off, but I'll remain a bit lenient since I realize my old franchise rights list is a bit excessive.

  • Kane Chronicles
  • Mario
  • Zelda
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Kirby
  • Earthbound
  • StarFox
  • Fire Emblem
  • Kid Icarus
  • Pikmin
  • Amulet
  • Conker Games
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Amnesia
  • Fallout
  • Sly Cooper
  • Shenmue

I believe certain rules were agreed to already. Check the other threads where I believe they were mentioned.

I would suggest drawing from these two posts specifically @Alpha

22 hours ago, Xillix said:

For the record, the rule changes I had proposed in the new forum were as follows:

-Numbered caps for talent roles per year; directors could do two movies a year, actors six (with leeway for cameos).

-No claiming franchise rights for any property that's had a theatrical movie in the past five years.

-Previously held franchise rights are reserved to those who had them in CAYOM v2 for the first in-game year of the new game, if not claimed by the end of the first year they become available.

-Franchise rights can be loaned out, shared, traded, etc. at the owners' discretion.

-Claiming franchise rights for a property with a future film scheduled (but none in the past five years) only allowed if you submit the finished version of your first movie in the franchise before the real one comes out.

As for community franchises - they tend to be stuff like Star Wars, James Bond, etc., both of which have had movies in the past five years and are essentially set to continue with frequent releases for the foreseeable future. I'd personally rather avoid those franchises in the game altogether. The whole point of having the rule against claiming franchises with recent releases (which existed in 2.0 already, in less specific form) was to avoid/minimize the influence of real-world franchise box office results. Plus there's something that feels off/unfair about someone lobbing a Star Wars in there with people's original stories and other, less-known franchises. It's almost guaranteed to get you in the top five of the year based solely on you happening to have the rights at that time, whether they're "community" rights or personal.

I would revise this rule to one year to the date before that movie comes out (not that you need your movie to be completed before then, but at least announce your intent in the part 1 thread before that date). That way we don't have people doing adaptations just to capitalize on an upcoming film (say someone does an IT remake because the IRL version has so much buzz).

Speaking of Stephen King properties I believe there was a rule in 2.0 that you can't claim an author's collected works without listing all the IPs that you want to claim separately. This should go both for individual creators and companies (Nintendo, Sony, Ubisoft etc.). I think this should be worked into the new rulebook.

Right then. I had quite a lot of franchise rights in the old thread, not all of which I intend to keep. But here are the ones I am still reserving.

  • Aldnoah.Zero
  • Attack on Titan
  • Berserk
  • Black Cat
  • Black Jack
  • Boku no Hero Academia
  • Code Geass
  • Codex Alera
  • Dresden Files
  • Hellsing
  • Fate Stay Night
  • The Heroic Legend of Prince Arslan
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Log Horizon
  • Lone Wolf and Cub
  • The Lost Fleet
  • Monster Hunter
  • Mushishi
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • Once on this Island
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Planetes
  • Primeval
  • Red Dwarf
  • Redwall
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Shinsekai Yori
  • Space Battleship Yamato
  • Trigun
  • Vinland Saga
  • World Trigger
  • Zettai Karen Children

And there are a few new ones I'm adding to the bunch.

  • Dr Stone
  • The Promised Neverland
  • We3
  • Worm

Additionally, I am releasing the following: Call of Duty, Jack Ryan, Bioshock, and Halo.

That leaves me with:

  • Dragon Age
  • Pokemon
  • StarCraft
  • Mass Effect
  • A Song of Ice & Fire (+ all related materials)
  • Pillars of Eternity

Star Wars is a special case, akin to the MCU, DCEU, etc. I suggest it be temporarily suspended from activity, but if some time from now the spinoffs are still focused around the original films/characters, then the Old Republic era be unlocked for people to play around with. There are certain elements of the franchise I would intend to utilize in the future. So with that in mind, I am going to release Star Wars with the exception of two aspects I intended to adapt:

Tales of the Jedi/KOTOR (which cover approximately 40-50 years of the Star Wars universe). Everything else about the franchise is fair game. But again, I recommend that the franchise as a whole be suspended for the initial years of the reboot.

What do people think of Water Bottle's suggestion that rights revert to being available if they go unused for a certain period? Should we put that in the first post rules? How long should the grace period be?

That sounds reasonable.

The rumor was that Sony had to make The Amazing Spider-Man for 2012 because otherwise they'd lose the rights, yes? That'd be five years from Spider-Man 3. Does five years sound reasonable for the time you can keep rights without using them, or do we wanna go longer?

According to the leaked deal negotiation, 5 year's and 9 month between release date, 3 year's and 9 month before production start after the last movie release if I remember correctly for amazing spider man. They also had 90 days after the release to announce to them the intention to extend their rights and do an other one (and pay something)

Amazing spider man principal photography started 3 years, 7 month and 2 days after SM 3 release date.

Amazing spider man was released 5 years, 1 month and 29 days after SM 3 release date.

Respecting both cut off.

Frankly, I don't even remember what movies I had claimed. Then again, might as well start fresh.

There are few I can think of that I'd like to claim at the moment:

-One Punch Man

-RWBY

-The Five Ancestors

-The Haunted Mansion

-Danny Phantom

I'd also like to claim Halo since Numbers is releasing it. Besides that, I'm pretty much good.

I mean I suppose we don't really need to figure out exactly how long it takes to release franchise rights for a couple in-game years at least.

Also just thought of something... I wanna bring back the Asian horror remake dealio so I'm gonna claim the rights to Phone / Pon. It's a South Korean horror flick from 2002.
