The Dark Knight Rises vs Batman Returns

Both films stand as divisive entries in their respective film series but which one do you consider to be better?

Maybe it's just my country but Batman Returns wasn't very divisive here. I was too young too remember the reaction when it came out but growing up it was THE batman movie at least until the Dark Knight and THE comic book movie until the early 00s when CBMs started popping up more frequently. I was almost shocked in my early internet days when I found out it gets that much hate in America.

 

So I'll go with it.

 

TDKR also exists.

Dark Knight Rises by a mile. I understand what Tim Burton was trying to do with Batman Returns, but the film is so busy and erratic that its beats only land about half the time.

I like both but Batman Returns is just more in line with my tastes for my Batman in terms of tone. Idk what it is about the film but I always feel an aching for the style presented in that film to make a return in comic book movies.

TDKR feels so apathetic to me.

 

Batman Returns is, on the other hand,  is Burton at his most energised. A kinky and depressing fairy-tale masquerading as a superhero movie - god bless it.

TDKR is stupid as can be...but it's at least competently made and somewhat entertaining.

Batman Returns is an abomination from start to finish.
