Wall Street

Written by:  Oliver Stone, Stanley Wiser

Directed by:  Oliver Stone

Starring:  Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Daryl Hannah

51PSMDDFG1L.jpg

After the success of Platoon (1986), Stone wanted film school friend and Los Angeles screenwriter Stanley Weiser to research and write a screenplay about quiz show scandals in the 1950s.  During a story conference, Stone suggested making a film about Wall Street instead. The director pitched the premise of two investment partners getting involved in questionable financial dealings, using each other, and they are tailed by a prosecutor as in Crime and Punishment. The director had been thinking about this kind of a movie as early as 1981[2] and was inspired by his father, Lou Stone, a broker during the Great Depression at Hayden Stone.

The filmmaker knew a New York businessman who was making millions and working long days putting together deals all over the world. This man started making mistakes that cost him everything. Stone remembers that the "story frames what happens in my movie, which is basically a Pilgrim’s Progress of a boy who is seduced and corrupted by the allure of easy money. And in the third act, he sets out to redeem himself". Stone asked Weiser to read Crime and Punishment, but Weiser found that its story did not mix well with their own. Stone then asked Weiser to read The Great Gatsby for material that they could use, but it was not the right fit either. Weiser had no prior knowledge of the financial world and immersed himself in researching the world of stock trading, junk bonds, and corporate takeovers. He and Stone spent three weeks visiting brokerage houses and interviewing investors.

Near Dark

Written by Eric Red, Kathryn Bigelow

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow

Starring:  Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Jeanette Goldstein, Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright

nd7.jpg

Vampire films had become "trendy" by the time of Near Dark's production, with the success of 1985's Fright Night and 1987's The Lost Boys (released two months before Near Dark and grossing $32 million). Kathryn Bigelow wanted to film a Western movie that departed from cinematic convention. When she and co-writer Eric Red found financial backing for a Western difficult to obtain, it was suggested to them that they try mixing a Western with another, more popular genre. Her interest in revisionist interpretation of cinematic tradition led her and Red to combine two genres that they regarded as ripe for reinterpretation, the Western movie and the vampire movie. The combination of the genres had been visited at least twice before on the big screen, with 1959's Curse of the Undead and 1966's Billy the Kid Versus Dracula.

Bigelow knew (and later married) director James Cameron, who directed Aliens, a 1986 film that shares three cast members (Paxton, Goldstein, and Henriksen) with Near Dark. A cinema seen in the background early in the film has Aliens on its marquee and Cameron played the man who "flips off" Severen. The film was scored by the German electronic music group Tangerine Dream.  The film was a disappointment at the box office as it took in 3.4 million against a 5 million production budget, but it has gone on to become a cult classic.

Christian Bales performance as the 12 year old Jim is mesmerizing. He is in virtually every scene of the 2.5 hour movie and gives us the full range of emotions. .As a history lesson Empire give us an insight to the happenings in China in WWII, and the ambitions of the Japanese Empire, which are never touched on in other WWII movies.Emotions abound when Jim is looking through the fence at the Japanese airbase, the sun is setting, he is dreaming of flying in those incredible machines, pilots are smartly uniformed and decorated, offices passing drinks to the young pilots, superb music playing, Zeros ready to go, Jim salutes the Japanese heroes as they are flying out. What we know is that the war is lost for Japan and these pilots are surely on Kamikaze suicide missions. We feel great empathy for these fellow human beings despite the fact that they are the enemy. The images in Empire are beautiful to look at, the movie is thought provoking and provide some history lesson, if somewhat fantasy and sacrine sweet. The film marked a widely noticed change in the repertoire of John Hughes. It was greeted with critical acclaim upon release, a revelation in that Hughes was considered a teen angst filmmaker. It also got two thumbs up from Siskel & Ebert, with Siskel declaring it John Candy's best role to date. It has 94% positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and is featured in Roger Ebert's Great Movies collection. Ebert said the movie was "... perfectly cast and soundly constructed, ..."

The film was a box office hit taking in almost 50 million dollars and has since gone on to become a staple at the American Thanksgiving.  John Hughes is great at writing sentimentality and he misses nothing here.  When you can go on a journey with a character like Del Griffith (Candy) and come out not only empathising with him but liking him, it's the sign of a great screenplay.

James L. Brook is one of those directors who always seems to take a quirky look at life. He isn't only the producer for "The Simpsons," he has some classic comedies under his belt -- "Broadcast News" is one of them.Although it doesn't match his later effort "As Good As It Gets," "Broadcast News" is still a very clever, funny and witty movie about a television broadcasting station and all the problems they suffer. There's a great comedic sequence of physical humour where Joan Cusack is running around the building trying to rush a news tape to the editing room in a matter of mere minutes before it is to be broadcast live on TV.This isn't only very truthful in terms of how hectic broadcasting stations are operated, but also a skillful and honest portrayal of human beings. A low-key, subtle movie with good acting and apt direction.

Evil Dead II

Directed by: Sam Raimi

Starring: Bruce Campbell, Dan Hicks, Kathy Wesley

wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==

600px-ED2_03.jpg

The film picks up where the first film left off, where a spirit is seen throwing Ash through the woods. Ash briefly becomes possessed by the demon, but when day breaks the spirit is gone, and Ash returns to normal. Ash finds little chance of safety, however, as the bridge leading to the cabin has been destroyed. Linda's revived head attacks Ash, biting his hand. Ash brings Linda's severed head to the shed, where her headless body attacks him with a chainsaw. Ash gains the upper hand and slashes the relentless deadite Linda to death, killing her a second and final time. Then Ash's possessed right hand tries to kill him, and Ash is forced to sever his hand with his chainsaw. Ash then attempts to shoot the severed hand hiding in the wall of the cabin. The hand mocks him and ultimately gets away.

If this sounds like your idea of a good time, then you probably loved the first one.  This is more of the same but in many people's eyes, it outdoes the first in every way.  More blood, gore, violence and comedy.  The Evil Dead films never really took off at the box office (this one made 6 million) but they are all cult classics that have gotten immensely popular over time.  Dino DeLaurentis put up the money for the film.  Raimi wanted 4 million but DDL would only give him 3.6 million.  This is why Raimi's idea for time travel and different worlds had to be scrapped until Army of Darkness.

The Untouchables

Written by:  David Mamet

Directed by:  Brian DePalma

Starring:  Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro

TUTCWPP-2.jpg

De Niro wanted one extra scene written for his character, and time to finish his commitment to the Broadway production of Cuba and His Teddy Bear and to gain about 30 pounds  to play Capone; according to De Palma, De Niro was "very concerned about the shape of his face for the part." The Untouchables began production in Chicago on August 18, 1986.  Actual historical Chicago locations were featured in the movie.

A month after the film was released, De Palma downplayed his role on the film:

Being a writer myself, I don't like to take credit for things I didn't do. I didn't develop this script. David [Mamet] used some of my ideas and he didn't use some of them. I looked upon it more clinically, as a piece of material that has to be shaped, with certain scenes here or there. But as for the moral dimension, that's more or less the conception of the script, and I just implemented it with my skills – which are well developed. It's good to walk in somebody else's shoes for a while. You get out of your own obsessions; you are in the service of somebody else's vision, and that's a great discipline for a director.

De Palma met with Bob Hoskins to discuss the role in case De Niro, the director's first choice for the part, turned it down. When De Niro took the part, De Palma mailed Hoskins a check for £20,000 with a "Thank You" note, which prompted Hoskins to call up De Palma and ask him if there were any more movies he didn't want him to be in.

The Untouchables has a few famous lines in it, one of them being the Connery quip when he says that it's just like a WOP, bringing a knife to a gun fight.  But perhaps the most famous part of the Untouchables was the homage to the Sergei Eisenstein Classic, Battleship Potemkin, Odessa Steps sequence.  Shot in heart-stopping slow-motion, the sequence is thrilling when seen in the context of the film, but so strongly directed that it can easily be viewed in isolation, without any prior knowledge of who its characters are or their motivations. De Palma’s use of camerawork and editing is so precise that it’s easy for even a casual observer to discern who the villains, heroes and victims are.

Predator

Written by:  Jim and John Thomas

Directed by John McTiernan

Starring:  The most macho cast every assembled, including two future US governors, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Duke, Jessie Ventura, Carl Weathers, Sonny Landham (RIP), Shane Black, Richard Chaves

This, imo, is the best trailer ever made:

predator-movie-poster-1987-1010675168.jp

Producers Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon first approached Arnold Schwarzenegger with the lead role. To play the elite band of soldiers, both Silver and Gordon, with co-producer John Davis, searched for other larger-than-life men of action. Carl Weathers, who had been memorable as boxer Apollo Creed in the Rocky films was their first choice to play Dillon, while professional wrestler and former Navy UDT Jesse Ventura was hired for his formidable physique as Blain. Native Americans Sonny Landham and Richard Chaves, and African-American Bill Duke, who co-starred alongside Schwarzenegger in Commando, provided ethnic balance. As a favor to writer Shane Black, whose first screenplay had become Silver's blockbuster Lethal Weapon a few months earlier, Silver hired Black to play a supporting role in the film, which also allowed him to watch McTiernan direct.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast as the Predator creature, the idea being that the physical action star would use his martial arts skills to make the Predator an agile, ninja-esque hunter. When compared to Schwarzenegger, Weathers, and Ventura, actors known for their bodybuilding regimens, it became apparent a more physically imposing man was needed to make the creature appear threatening. Additionally, it was reported that Van Damme constantly complained about the monster suit being too hot, causing him to pass out. He also had allegedly voiced his reservations on numerous occasions regarding the fact he would not be appearing on camera without the suit. Additionally, the original design for the Predator was felt to be too cumbersome and difficult to manage in the jungle and, even with a more imposing actor, was felt to not provoke enough fear. Van Damme was removed from the film and replaced by Kevin Peter Hall.

Predator was a gigantic hit and was the film that sent Arnold's career into a different stratosphere.  It only took in 98 million WW but it became a massive hit on HV and also one of the more quotable 80's films.  When checking out the user reviews on our site, a lot of us just quote the movie, that's how the good and memorable the script was.

As much as I hate to leave you guys hanging, I have some other things to take care of.

I will have this completed possibly tomorrow in the morning (my time) and at the latest, in the evening (my time).

But the top five will cause a few meltdowns and some celebrations.
