The Descendants

6:05PM Sunday, December 4th

AMC Boston Common 19 & Lie-MAX

Theater Capacity: 170 (40% full)

Ticket Price: $11.50

TRAILERS:

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - great cast and funny trailer, good reaction

We Bought a Zoo - nice trailer and got some talking from audience, too

Contraband - the trailer effectively over-sells the whole movie, showing WAY too much of the content; weak reaction

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - cool trailer, great music, but silent audience reaction

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close- nice trailer, no reaction

In the Land of Blood and Honey - this is the Angelina Jolie-directed movie; looks interesting, but no reaction

Being Flynn - weak trailer, no reaction

THE FILM:

This is easily the most depressing film I've ever seen set in a tropical paradise (Hawaii). Before going to see it, I assumed The Descendants trailers did a lot to spoil the film, but I was instead taken aback at how the movie played out. And also, I admired how the tone of the film was in line with pretty much every other Fox Searchlight picture (which I personally believe is the live-action studio equivalent of Pixar).

As usual, George Clooney delivers an excellent Oscar-worthy performance. He was definitely better in The Descendants than this year's The Ides of March. The girls playing his daughter were pretty impressive as well, especially Shailene Woodley. Mark my words that Woodley will have a very successful career ahead of her. There were a few surprises among supporting cast, but (like many others have said) I think the biggest surprise was Judy Greer's dramatic performance. I was also really intrigued how the film not only included a plot point about an oceanfront development in Hawaii, but also the roll that ends up playing through the whole movie.

The Descendants definitely deserves any/all buzz it has been receiving. The comments from my audience were similarly enthusiastic as people exited the theater. As I stated, the film is ultimately a depressing one, but in no way does that adjective describe the quality of performances, direction, and writing that went into the movie. I wouldn't go so far as to recommend this movie to everybody, but at the same time I think The Descendants has more mainstream appeal than some other Fox Searchlight films.

THE VERDICT: 9.2 / 10.0, A-

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel trailer seems to be getting great reactions from what we're seeing in the crowd reports. They may have a nice little sleeper hit on their hands.

I was surprised at how well it was received at my showing! Granted it was an older crowd, but still. Even I thought it looked pretty good.

Arthur Christmas

Sunday, 4:20 PM, only 5-10 people in the theater :(. It was also in 3D. The 3D was alright at best, nothing spectacular.

Trailers (there was not much reaction to any of them)

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

The Adventures of Tintin

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax

The Pirates!: Band of Misfits

Sony found it necessary to attach a Justin Bieber music video to the film. It was tolerable, that's all I'm going to say...

The film was pretty good, of course, it's an Aardman Animations film. I didn't think it was as good as "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" and "Chicken Run", but it was a very fun film with a lot of heart, and a lot of laughs. The 5-10 people in my audience barely laughed, not sure if they really enjoyed it or not. I also missed the old character designs and style of their previous films, ("Flushed Away" was CGI, but yet the characters still had that look) although they are going back to that style for "Pirates!" as well as going back to stop-motion. However, Aardman hasn't made a bad film yet, IMO. "Arthur Christmas" was a good old fashioned holiday family film, the kind that the family would watch every Christmas. Here's hoping it finds an audience.

Valentine's Day New Year's Eve

5:10PM Friday, December 9th

AMC Boston Common 19 & Lie-MAX

Theater Capacity: 300 (50% full)

Ticket Price: $0 (because my friend has tons of gold passes and is awesome!)

TRAILER(S): (***NOTE: the projector and sound weren't working, so the trailers and movie began 20 minutes late)

Mirror Mirror - looks like a crappy movie, but the audience didn't care because they still love Julia Roberts. Great reaction.

THE FILM:

I was counting on New Year's Eve to be a shamelessly entertainin, star-studded, cheese-ball romantic comedy that hits all the sentimental notes one comes to expect from these holiday-centric movies, and it didn't disappoint.

Should a few of the actors in this film be ashamed of themselves for stopping this low? Probably. Will we forgive them for this? Yes. Why? Because the movie's not about any one person or couple--it's about love, and fate, and new beginnings, and so on. I'm just gonna give grades to everyone in the story that I and the audience enjoyed--from best to worst.

Sofia Vergara - A+

Halle Berry - A+

Zac Efron - A

Seth Myers - A-

Jessica Biel - A-

Common - A-

Michele Pfeifer - B+

Ashton Kutcher - B

Lea Michele - B

Larry Miller - B

Robert DeNiro - B-

Ludacris - B-

Hillary Swank - B-

Josh Duhamal - C+

Sarah Jessica Parker - C+

Katherine Heigl - C

Jon Bon Jovi - C-

Abigail Breslin - D

Hector Elizondo - D

Cary Elwes - F

If I missed anyone, it's only because I lost count. One pairing will easily make you cry. Another couple pairings will charm the pants off of you. And another couple will make you sick to your stomach. In any case, though, the movie was a fun time at the theater and I recommend it to everyone looking for just that.

THE VERDICT: 7.2 / 10.0, C-

SHAME

2:15 Showing (1st show)

I was really surprised by the size of the crowd, 300 seats and at least 90% full, after the front 2 rows it was jam packed. Given the subject matter, the 18A rating (in Canada) and that it was the first show I was expecting maybe 50 people.

3 Trailers

Coriolanus - This looks really good and has a great cast. Definitely some buzz.

A Dangerous Method - Again, a little buzz.

The Iron Lady - Meryl looks and sounds spot on, I expect an Oscar nomination for her, but the movie isn't really my type and I didn't hear much reaction to the trailer.

The movie was interesting, and I did like it. The audience was pretty quiet, with a few mild laughs at a couple of spots. I counted 3 walk outs, actually lower than I would have guessed. I was prepared for the Fassbender nudity (some actors really do have the total package Posted Image) but I was surprised at Carey Mulligan, I really wasn't expecting such an extended full frontal scene from her, but she looked great. There was definitely some exit chatter, but it was all whispered, rather unusual compared to most movies.

Grade- A-

Arthur Christmas 2D6:25pm95% fullMovie: Wow this is the best animated film of the year. I loved the story, voice cast, and animation. It is definitely a classic Christmas film. The audience ate it right up and loved it. Lots of positive talk after and the kids said they really enjoyed it. 9.6/10

The Sitter

7:50PM Saturday, December 10th

Regal Fenway 13 & RPX

Theater Capacity: 120 (25%, all college students)

Ticket Price: $9.00

TRAILERS:

The Three Stooges - looks dumb except for the very end of the trailer where they make fun of Snookie; good reaction.

[untitled] - All it says is to check out facebook.com/chronicle, so I'm guessing it'll be called "Chronicle". This had a very intriguing trailer and sort of a Cloverfield/Paranormal Activity vibe. Good reaction.

21 Jump Street - excellent reaction, very funny trailer. I hope this does well.

Project X - looks like a racier Can't Hardly Wait. Lots of talking from audience.

American Reunion - fantastic trailer, loads of laughs from audience, great reaction. My friend and a couple other people exclaimed "Priceless" at Jim's dad in the end.

The Devil Inside - truly haunting trailer, this freaked out several folks in the audience.

THE FILM:

This film had the laughter and production equivalent of last year's Date Night. Except with fewer stars and only a couple surprises, The Sitter falls short among other R-rated comedies. My friend and I enjoyed it and laughed very hard, but now that I've had a day to think and remember the film I realize it was kind of forgettable.

Jonah Hill is funny as usual and as the marketing suggests, this is his movie. The three children are pretty funny, too, in completely different ways. It's a little ridiculous to believe that they are siblings, though, and their kinship only seems believable when around their mom. It was fun to see Sam Rockwell playing a villain again, even if his character was over-the-top (yet somehow fell short at the same time).

The Sitter is definitely better to watch with other people/a group of friends, but I don't think it'll find an audience more diverse than the one I watched this film with. I'd probably recommend saving your money, though, and waiting to check this out on Netflix instant on a rainy day.

THE VERDICT: 7.5 / 10.0, C

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, SpyAMC Lincoln Square - 12:20A million seats, two floors, 100 people ish.Trailers:Dragon Tattoo yay!Extremely Loud good!A movie with the kid from There Will Be Blood "The lord works in mysterious ways yes he duzzah!"Movie:It's really slow, but compared to the book (which I just finished last night) it's faster than The Social Network. Everyone is great, particularly Gary Oldman. Tom Hardy and the guy who plays Guillam were also good.It starts getting tense in the archives scene around halfway through. The ending is changed from the book, but I think it's for the better. The whole ending, the montage of everyone set to La Mer (Beyond the Sea but in French), was really amazing. It was so perfect. I'd see the movie again just for those 5 minutes.I can see Picture, Actor, Score, Cinematography (it's really pretty), Art Direction, Supporting Actor (I don't know who though, there are so many great performances, not Colin Firth though) and Makeup.-Everyone was talking on the way out. Great reactions - and it sounded like most people read the book.

I went to see Shame yesterday, but I just don't feel like writing a whole crowd report for it.

Feeling a little ashamed about watching it to be honest. It is the first NC-17 movie I've ever gone to see in theaters (and only the 3rd or 4th NC-17 movie I've ever seen, period). Very heavy, dirty stuff... like watching a porno with a big audience. Except there was a definitely a story being told. And while the film does have an American Psycho vibe throughout, all I could think of for some reason when the score was really overpowering was how much Shame reminded me of Memento. Maybe the scenes of Michael Fassbender alone in his apartment coupled with the music subconsciously reminded me of Guy Pearce in the motel, but whatever the case they are totally different movies.

Prudes and conservatives beware.

Huh, didn't realise Mulligan is nude in the film too. Another reason to see it.
