Logan officially classified as a 15 in the UK, no cuts. It sure is a strong 15...

Logan is going to big. Bigger than some of the latest X-Men movies.

Logan will do well but I imagine it'll do less than Deadpool simply because there is so much competition in March, I could see outgrossing Days of Future Past though

WARNER BROS

The Lego Batman Movie fell only 19% as it retained top spot at the UK box office for the second straight week.

Warner Bros’ animation enjoyed a $5.52m (£4.43m) second weekend for a strong $21.7m (£17.43m) to date. As expected, it prospered over the half term as it amassed more than $6.2m (£5m) across Mon-Thurs.

The Lego Movie stood at $27.4m (£21.97m) at the same stage of its run, but didn’t have major family competition like Lego Batman does with Sing, with its main rival being Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

Also for Warner Bros, John Wick: Chapter 2 shot to a promising $2.78m (£2.23m) UK debut from its 436 sites to chart third.

The action sequel took $311,000 (£249,000) from Valentine’s Day previews and has already surpassed the entire UK haul of John Wick, boosted by that film’s cult status on home entertainment.

Sequels are usually front-loaded, but Chapter 2 could benefit as counter-programming to a family and Oscar heavy market at the moment.

UNIVERSAL

Fifty Shades Darker remained in second as it dropped 55% on its way to a $4.29m (£3.44m) second weekend.

Universal’s raunchy sequel whipped up $2.49m (£2m) on Valentine’s Day and has now reached $20.8m (£16.71m) in the UK, making it the ninth highest-grossing 18-rated film of all time.

Even with similar drops, it should cross £20m by the end of its run.

Also for Universal, Sing fell only 10% with a $2.64m (£2.12m) fourth weekend, helped by boosted Friday takings.

Illumination Entertainment’s latest hit animation took more than $3.74m (£3m) across Mon-Thurs thanks to the school holidays, and has now reached a superb $29.3m (£23.45m) in the UK.

Rounding off this week’s top five, The Great Wall sliced to a so-so $2.06m (£1.65m) debut from its 459 sites.

That marks director Zhang Yimou’s best-ever UK opening, ahead of Hero’s $1.25m (£1m) from 254 sites, although that film was entirely in Mandarin compared to The Great Wall’s mix of English and Mandarin.

Split added $516,000 (£414,000) for an impressive $13.1m (£10.5m) after five weeks in play, making it director M Night Shyamalan’s fourth-biggest UK result.

FOX

Hidden Figures recorded the fourth-biggest UK debut of this year’s crop of Oscar Best Picture contenders.

Fox’s biopic accumulated a non-final $1.8m (£1.44m) from its 489 sites, including around $287,000 (£230,000) in previews from its Bafta-qualifying run since last Friday (February 10).

The middling debut is director Theodore Melfi’s best-ever UK result.

Also for Fox, Secret Cinema’s production of Moulin Rouge! opened its doors on Valentine’s Day and has grossed a non-final $246,000 (£197,160). It runs until April 30.

Trolls has now taken $30.6m (£24.55m).

SONY

T2 Trainspotting will soon break into the top ten highest-grossing 18-rated films of all time in the UK.

Sony’s long-awaited sequel journeyed to a $990,000 (£794,000) fourth weekend for a decent $19.1m (£15.3m) to date, and will shortly overtake the $19.2m (£15.4m) results of Fatal Attraction (1988) and Basic Instinct (1992), not adjusted for inflation.

ENTERTAINMENT

Lion continued its remarkable UK run with a tiny drop of 7% on its way to a $867,000 (£695,739) fifth weekend.

Entertainment’s drama has now travelled to $9.97m (£8m) and could still overtake Arrival’s $11.7m (£9.4m) result to become the second highest-grossing Oscar Best Picture nominee of this year.

LIONSGATE

La La Land fell a slim 32% in its sixth weekend as it danced to an extra $810,000 (£649,252).

Lionsgate’s Oscar favourite has now amassed a dazzling $35.3m (£28.29m) in the UK and expected awards success should see it past the £30m mark, which would also see it become Lionsgate’s third-biggest film ever.

Also for Lionsgate, Hacksaw Ridge fought to a further $320,000 (£256,381) for $6.17m (£4.94m) after four weeks in play.

ALTITUDE

Moonlight enjoyed an auspicious start to its UK box office run after limited previews over the past week.

Altitude’s Oscar contender posted an excellent debut of $774,000 (£620,636) from its 85 sites, including $317,000 (£253,924) in previews. Its Fri-Sun total of $457,000 (£366,712) saw it record a healthy site average of $5,381 (£4,314), lifting to $9,098 (£7,294) for its overall opening.

The result marks Altitude’s biggest-ever opening, surpassing Amy’s $652,000 (£523,192), and the distributor is looking to expand into around 140 sites from Friday (February 24).

Also for Altitude, The Eagle Huntress has reached $424,000 (£339,881), surpassing the results of fellow documentaries like Exit Through The Gift Shop, Finding Vivian Maier and Grizzly Man.

PARAMOUNT

Fences expanded to 148 sites on its way to a non-final $470,000 (£377,000) second weekend.

Paramount’s Oscar contender has now grossed $707,000 (£567,000) after ten days in play, and expands to more than 300 sites from this coming Friday where it will hope to profit on Oscar success.

Also for Paramount, Rings has scared up $2.18m (£1.75m) after three weeks in play.

STUDIOCANAL

In a crowded market, Studiocanal’s The Founder opened with an unspectacular $289,000 (£231,412) from its 181 sites, marking a site average of $1,595 (£1,279).

That’s one of the lowest debuts for director John Lee Hancock, although The Blind Side and Saving Mr. Banks benefitted from awards contention.

Also for Studiocanal, Manchester By The Sea crossed the £3m mark as a $68,000 (£54,197) weekend lifted it to $3.76m (£3.01m).

EONE

Jackie has now grossed $4.1m (£3.29m) following a $119,000 (£95,401) fifth weekend through eOne.

Also for eOne, 20th Century Women expanded to 48 sites for a $101,000 (£80,929) second weekend and $226,000 (£181,448) to date.

SODA PICTURES

In its third weekend, Soda Pictures’ Toni Erdmann added a non-final $43,000 (£34,263) for $528,000 (£423,473) to date. Following its widespread critical acclaim, the team will now be hoping for an Oscar bounce to help get the film well clear of the £500,000 mark.

UPCOMING RELEASES

This week sees saturation releases for Lionsgate’s Patriots Day (opens February 23) and Fox’s A Cure For Wellness.

Curzon Artificial Eye’s It’s Only The End Of The World, Lionsgate’s The Fits, Arrow Films’ Shut In and Dogwoof’s Best are among the films receiving a limited release.

Some amazing holds this weekend, and some good openings.

Lego Movie seems to be heading for around £25m or so, possibly more, which is a great result given Sing will probably end up around the £30m mark. Fifty Shades will easily pass £20m, and La La Land £30m. For comparison, the first two months of 2016 and 2015 produced 2 £20m+ films. 2017 has 4. It's been a very strong start to the year, and March looks set to be huge, especially Beauty in the Beast, which has £50m+ potential. The Jungle Book last year grossed £46m, which should be the floor for BatB.

Excellent for Lion, £10m should happen, which is an 8x multiplier from its opening.

Admissions update

Admissions numbers – actual tickets sold – are in for January, and they show a year-on-year rise of 6.9%. Cinemas should be happy with this outcome, especially since January 2016 was boosted by continued play for Star Wars: The Force Awakens – a film that grossed nearly £36m of its £123m total in 2016. This time, we had Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sustaining its run in a similar fashion, but it’s a smaller title. January this year was boosted by La La Land’s impressive performance, plus some nice wins for Sing, T2 Trainspotting and Split (a title that has quietly piled away £10m in UK box office).

UK TOP FIVE

Ranking Film/Distributor Weekend gross Running total
1 The Lego Batman Movie (WB) $3.6m (£2.89m) $28.7m (£23.06m)
2 Fifty Shades Darker (Universal) $1.86m (£1.5m) $25.2m (£20.31m)
3 Sing (Universal) $1.83m (£1.47m) $33m (£26.55m)
4 John Wick: Chapter 2 (WB) $1.42m (£1.15m) $5.52m (£4.44m)
5 Hidden Figures (Fox) $1.22m (£985,666) $4.16m (£3.35m)

(Note - Dollar conversions are based on today’s rates)

WARNER BROS

The Lego Batman Movie comfortably saw off the competition to record a hat-trick at the top of the UK box office.

Warner Bros’ animation fell a respectable 35% as it swung to a $3.6m (£2.89m) third weekend for a terrific $28.7m (£23.06m) so far, giving it an outside - if unlikely - shot at £30m.

Logan will likely prevent Lego Batman from a fourth week as the UK’s number one, but it can prosper over the next fortnight until new family competition arrives with Beauty And The Beast on March 17.

Also for Warner Bros, John Wick: Chapter 2 shot its way to a $1.42m (£1.15m) second weekend for $5.52m (£4.44m) to date, and has already done more than double the result of its predecessor.

Within posted a UK bow of $10,400 (£8,364) from its 18 sites.

UNIVERSAL

Fifty Shades Darker has crossed the £20m mark at the UK box office in its third weekend.

Universal’s raunchy sequel fell more than 50% to add $1.86m (£1.5m) for a decent $25.2m (£20.31m). It is now the sixth highest-grossing 18-rated film in the UK, with American Beauty ($26.5m/£21.3m) and Hannibal ($26.7m/£21.5m) next in its sights.

Also for Universal, Sing dropped 30% on its way to a $1.83m (£1.47m) fifth weekend for a superb $33m (£26.55m) to date. When final figures are confirmed, it could swap places with Fifty Shades Darker.

The Great Wall fell 42% with a $1.2m (£963,040) second weekend for $4.4m (£3.54m) and will soon become director Zhang Yimou’s best-ever UK result.

Split has reached an impressive $13.7m (£11.02m) after six weeks in play.

FOX

Hidden Figures rounded off this week’s top five as it fell only 18% (excluding previews) with a non-final $1.22m (£985,666).

Fox’s drama has now accumulated $4.16m (£3.35m) in the UK and will hope to not be affected too much by its shut-out at last night’s Oscars.

Also for Fox, A Cure For Wellness posted a lacklustre $504,000 (£406,045) UK debut from its 388 sites, arguably affected by its hefty running time and 18 certificate.

It’s on par with director Gore Verbinski’s lowest-ever UK opening, The Weather Man’s $503,000 (£405,509) bow from 258 sites back in 2006.

Secret Cinema’s production of Moulin Rouge! has danced to $843,000 (£678,410) after two weeks of its run, while Trolls has now amassed $30.7m (£24.71m).

LIONSGATE

Patriots Day missed out on the top five as it landed in seventh on its UK debut.

Lionsgate’s latest Peter Berg outing grossed $1.05m (£844,000) from its 440 sites, including $118,000 (£95,000) in previews, marking a solid, if unspectacular, site average of $2,381 (£1,918).

The opening marks Berg’s fifth best overall UK bow, behind The Kingdom’s $1.14m (£919,537) from 393 sites.

Also for Lionsgate, Oscar winner La La Land fell a slim 32% on its way to a $555,000 (£447,000) seventh weekend for a dazzling $36.2m (£29.19m), with its awards success likely to see it comfortably past £30m.

Hacksaw Ridge added $199,000 (£160,000) for $6.6m (£5.31m) after five weeks in play, while The Fits opened with $2,100 (£1,690) from its nine sites on its UK debut.

ENTERTAINMENT

Lion continued its remarkable UK run by not dropping at all with a $860,000 (£692,555) sixth weekend.

Entertainment’s drama is now up to $11.5m (£9.26m), a result that is more than seven times its $1.58m (£1.27m) debut, and it will soon become the second highest-grossing Oscar Best Picture nominee, ahead of Arrival’s $11.7m (£9.4m).

SONY

T2 Trainspotting is now the tenth highest-grossing 18-rated film of all time at the UK box office.

Sony’s long-awaited sequel fell 51% as it journeyed to a $488,000 (£392,979) fourth weekend for an excellent $20.1m (£16.14m) to date, surpassing Bruno’s $19.5m (£15.7m) result.

ALTITUDE

Expanding to 181 sites, Moonlight enjoyed a 6% boost (excluding previews) with a non-final $486,000 (£391,504) second weekend.

Altitude’s Best Picture winner crossed the £1m mark over the weekend to stand at a promising $1.56m (£1.26m) and is set for another expansion of 80 more sites this coming Friday after its Oscar success.

The unique circumstances of its Best Picture win which has gone viral on social media could provide an added boost to the usual awards win uplift.

PARAMOUNT

Fences expanded to 359 sites to post a minimal drop with a non-final $434,000 (£349,147) third weekend.

Paramount’s drama is now up to $1.43m (£1.15m) following its gradual rollout and could benefit from Viola Davis’ Oscar win last night.

STUDIOCANAL

Receiving a pre-Oscars boost of 58%, Studiocanal’s Manchester By The Sea added $119,000 (£95,478) for $3.97m (£3.2m) to date. Its two Oscar wins could see a similar boost over this coming week.

Also for Studiocanal, The Founder dropped more than 70% with a $76,000 (£61,241) second weekend for $536,000 (£431,048) to date.

CURZON ARTIFICIAL EYE

From its 15 sites through Curzon Artificial Eye, It’s Only The End Of The World recorded a UK debut of $44,000 (£35,165), including previews, failing to dislodge Mommy’s $74,000 (£59,935) from 24 sites as Xavier Dolan’s best UK opening.

UPCOMING RELEASES

This week sees saturation releases for Fox’s Logan (opens March 1), Warner Bros’ Fist Fight and Pathe’s Viceroy’s House.

Lionsgate’s Trespass Against Us receives a wide release, while Park Circus’ Certain Women and Arrow Films’ Headshot are among the films receiving a limited release.

Amazing for Lion. It seems like it could end up with a 10x multiplier in the end.

Another big week for Lego Batman and Sing. The latter should be able to reach £30m, and LB also has a chance. Will have to move quickly though because BatB arrives soon.

La La Land should reach £30m this week, and will probably end up around £31-32m.

As for openers, Logan opens tomorrow. A 5-day of £10m is doable imo. Marketing is really good. For comparison, Days of Future Past opened to £9.1m 4-day, and £11.6m 5 day which included bank holiday Monday. Deadpool had a 5-day opening of £13.7m. It's very unlikely Logan matches that as it doesn't have a VD boost, but the harder rating will probably work in its favour.

Can't believe Lego Batman is only slightly behind Despite Sings's bigger opening, even if it only gets to £25-26m, it's still a big success.

Logan, £9-10m seems likely, I imagine it could get to £30m total which might be tricky with the huge competition in March. I have a feeling Kong is going to be squeezed as its released in between Logan and Beauty and the Beast
