Poland Box Office | Avatar: The Way of Water is HUGE

It's interesting that during Communism Era it was normal that we had way above 120 milion admissions per year. But back then tickets were cheap so everyone could go and see a movie. I think it's still possible for the market to reach at least 60-70 milion admissions in 10-15 years.

Well,it was one of the rare entertaining thing you could do back then, and it was before video games and Internet.

Okay now it's time for the 1H/2014 numbers

Attendence - 19.21 million admissions ( 2nd best 1H in last 10 years )

Top movies by admissions ( LM - local movie )

[*]Jack Strong - 1,169 milion admissions (LM) [*]Wolf of Wall Street - 0.889 million admissions [*]Pod Mocnym Aniołem - 0.88 million admissions (LM) [*]Wkręceni - 0.832 million admissions (LM) [*]Kamienie na Szaniec - 0.827 million admissions (LM) [*]Hobbit 2 - 0.762 million admissions ( only 2014 numbers, total was around 1.8 million admissions ) [*]Rio 2 - 0.690 million admissions [*]Lego: The Movie - 0.669 million admissions [*]How to Train Your Dragon 2 - 0.594 million admissions [*]Maleficient - 0.551 million admissions [*]Powstanie Warszawskie - 0.548 million admissions (LM)

Only one movie above 1 million admissions is not great but 11 movies above 500.000 admissions is record.

2H/2014 started with the worst July in years so that's not a good news. Hopefully August will do better.

Weekend numbers ( 1-3 August 2014 )

    [*]Guardians of the Galaxy       64 412 / 64 412 [*]Sex Tape                             39 979 / 60 649 [*]Planes 2         26 558 / 264 522 [*]Hercules         23 212 / 117 758 [*]How to Train Your Dragon 2 13 547 / 907 265 [*]Powstanie Warszawskie 11 333 / 573 261 [*]Tarzan   10 819 / 10 819 [*]Step Up: All in   8 919 / 105 288 [*]The Nut Job 8 777 / 268 308 [*]Chef   6 819 / 33 318

Another hot and sunny weekend and another low attended weekend of this miserable summer at box office.

GOTG did very well for a comic book movie. It has a good chance at beating ASM 2, XM: DOFP and CA:TWS. If the good WOM will spread fast then it has a chance at 300.000 admissions.

Sex Tape did better then expected but I don't see anything more then 150.000-200.000 admissions.

Planes 2 are doing worse then the first movie but it's still going to end somewhere around 350.000-400.000 admissions

Hercules is doing pretty well I must say. It has a good chance of reaching 200.000 admissions.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 - there is only one question left "will it reach 1 million admissions"

Powstanie Warszawskie - back in top 10 due to 70 Anniversary of Warsaw Uprising ( Powstanie Warszawskie ). BTW this is a documentary so the total is a very impressive result.

Weekend numbers ( 8-10 August 2013 )

    [*]Guardians of the Galaxy             44 818 / 185 805 [*]Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles    32 454 / 32 454 [*]Sex Tape 30 619 / 139 422 [*]Into the Storm 30 444 / 30 444 [*]A Most Wanted Man 19 878 / 19 878 [*]The Hundred-Foot Journey     18 635 / 20 204 [*]Planes 2 17 215 / 317 898 [*]Druzyna 15 286 / 15 286 [*]How to Train Your Dragon 2     11 773 / 941 371 [*]Hercules 11 051 / 154 338

GOTG  - very good hold and very good mid-week numbers. It will become the biggest comic book movie of the year. Great suprise.

TMNT - big marketing campaign didn't help. Poor opening and only a miracle could save it now.

Sex Tape - this is doing better then expected. It looks that it will do more then 200 000 admissions, which is suprising.

Into the Storm, A Most Wanted Man and The Hundred-Foot Journey - poor opening and nothing to talk about, anything above 100 000 admissions will be a success.

Planes 2 - those mid-week numbers for kids movies are fantastic this summer ( probably the only thing fantastic about this summer in polish box office ). It might actually pass 400 000 admissions if it keeps those holds in mid-week

HTTYD 2 - mid-week numbers are the only hope for pushing this movie over 1 million admissions and they are doing just that. It's really close now and with few more weeks of schools out it might just pass it.

Hercules - it already did more then it was expected.

Movies like THFJ never open good. They are meant for long legs. Remember The best offer last year? 8k opening 80k total. If the new Allen dissapoints viewers THFJ also has a nice chance to get a good result. Especially given nothing really interesting is opening in the next few weeks. I say 120-150k for it is entirely possible. Let's wait and see how the competition performs.

Sex Tape is nothing surprising. Smaller cities like raunchy comedies and like the topic of sex. Also the only other broad, simple comedy this summer is French (ie smaller cities will not be intersted) so it's a good slot for it.

GOTG is a huge surprise. A lot of Marvel firsts didn't open well in Poland and comic books don't have a stellar track record here. Though the word of mouth is amazing I'm surprised it goes so well. Local viewers usually prefer more conventional movies.

Welcome norbar :)

Are you from Box Office'owy Zawrót Głowy on FB?

Well if THFJ will reach 100k admissions then it will have good legs too ;)

Tomorrow results for the holiday weekend ( which didn't have good weather ) so the numbers could finally be worth discussing :D

Hi

Nope, just liked it.

The weekend results are very good. Though that's hardly a surprise if one followed the reservations in major cities. Btw. Tommorow ? What is your source for results? I though paid industry services informed on them earlier.

Well I'm just an amateur who finds box office as hobby and I take numbers from BOM for $ and admissions from Stopklatka or SFP.

I wanted to gain access to boxoffice.pl but they decline to give access to public.

When I worked at Multikino I had better idea about how each movie did but that was years ago.

Even potential paying customers? That's strange.

Small towns might help because many small theaters will get the copies that big multiplex chains have returned to distributor.

2nd run has been small lately given how many distributors are willing to open 150copies or more. They help if you are interested in 10k viewers per week but I doubt Fox will be happy about that.. The dragon will be at 1mil but give it 2-3 weeks, maybe more if Giver is above 100 copies and Allen is above 150.

It's interesting how having 100 copies was quite an achievement 5-6 years ago. Now with many new multiplex cinemas and digital projectors in small theaters in small towns it's nothing special to have a movie with 100 copies.

Weekend numbers ( 15-17 August 2013 )

    [*]Lucy                       113 895 / 131 833* [*]The Pirate Fairy     103 619 / 124 408* [*]Les Vacances du petit Nicolas   69 804 / 86 078* [*]The Expendables 3           42 422 / 46 012* [*]Guardians of the Galaxy           29 848 / 271 009 [*]Sex Tape                     26 066 / 201 438 [*]Into the Storm                     20 932 / 83 482 [*]TMNT                       19 033 / 85 126 [*]The Hundred-Foot Journey             17 973 / 62 062 [*]Planes 2                     12 745 / 349  431

* with Thursday previews

Holiday weekend without good weather and box office has exploded :D

Lucy - fantastic opening with high average attendence per copy should allow this movie to reach >400k admissions.

The Pirate Fairy - animated movies always do well in Poland and this is no exception. It should have good legs and >500k admissions shouldn't be a problem.

Les Vacances du petit Nicolas - much lower opening then the first movie. If it manages a similar multiplier as first movie then it should reach ~300k admissions.

The Expendables 3 - this is the worst opening for the franchise. It's ~30% drop from 2nd movie opening weekend. This doesn't look good. It will be very hard to reach 200k admissions.

GOTG - it's doing fantastic so far. If it manages to keep those good drops then >400k admissions shouldn't be a problem and that would be a huge achievement for a comic book movie.

Sex Tape - to my suprise this movie is selling well. I should have known better. With good holds 300k admissions is not out of reach.

Into the Storm and TMNT - drops are pretty good but they won't make more then 150k admissions.

THFJ - looks like I really underestimated this movie. 100k admissions shouldn't be a problem after all.

Planes 2 and HTTYD 2 - they will crawl to 400k and 1M admissions but they will reach it hopefully.
