We're indeed a strange country sometimes, that's an amazing hold for FSD. It reminds me of Hunger Games. MJ1 and MJ2 dropped nearly everywhere in the world, especially the final installment, except for our country. I wonder why that is? Or look at the Hangover trilogy...

Germany is an admirable country, although the Germans' choices for films are really strange.

From the little I know of the German people, the LEGO franchise had everything to be a success, strangely, it is not what has been happening. The LEGO brand is very strong in the country, Germany is recognized as a country that children enjoy playing, it also hosts the world's largest toy fair in Nuremberg.

It may be a consolation, but LEGO movies are being most successful in english-speaking countries.

The humour may only work in english-speaking countries.

A rather nice weekend with two fine openers and decent to good drops all over the chart - no release dropped harder than 50%! Recep Idevik 5 has a completely otherworldly PTA, in line with other successful turkish releases - they don't get many shows but those are PACKED! The only disappointment was Trainspotting 2; cult status doesn't always translate to admissions.

Next weekend: Admission-wise, it might become a close race for #1, with Bibi & Tina 4 challenging 50SoG2. Among the domestic teenager book adaptions, Bibi & Tina is the most successful series, with 2mil admissions total for part 3. Even if part 4 might drop a bit from that success, it should become a  success - about 325-375k OW should happen (part 3: 374k). Besides that, it already has over 100k admissions in the bag from early previews! Other interesting releases: Boston, A Cure for Wellness, Lion. Among holdovers, John Wick 2 and 50SoG2 might drop in a similar range as the first ones (-40% both in the corresponding weekends).

The Thursday estimates (insidekino.de/forum):

New Releases:

Bibi & Tina - Tohuwabohu total!: ?k (starts in 715 theaters, ok reviews, had already 100k preview admissions on Sunday) - no numbers but judging from reports I would also say it will become #1
A Cure for Wellness: 8k (400, some mediocre but also some very good reviews - overall critics here in Germany are much nicer to the film than in the USA)
Bailey/A Dog's Purpose: 1.5k (216, pretty good reviews but the video, better said the controversity around the video is also known here)
Boston: 1.5k (184, good reviews)
Lion - Der lange Weg nach Hause: 6.5k (152, good or very good reviews) – indeed not bad at all

Holdovers:

Fifty Shades Darker: 44k (90k)
John Wick 2: 23.5k (35k) – that would be a very ok hold
Recep Ivedik 5: 8k (19k)
La La Land: 9k (13k)
Split: 6k (10.5k)
Mein Blind Date mit dem Leben: 3.5k (7k)
T2 Trainspotting: 3k (10k)
Elle: 4.5k (4k)
Schatz, nimm Du sie!: 1k (3k)

The carnival week started today but still most estimates seem pretty low in my view.
Monday and Tuesday are no official holidays but two states (Bavaria e.g.) have school holidays so the admission numbers during the next week should be better than normal.

Will Ferell movies never worked in Germany, so it's no surprise, that the humor didn't work out too well. I actually hated the Lego Movie.

First trend (insidekino.de):

#1 B&T 4: 500k - with large previews but still a very good start
#2 50SD: 300k – would be ca. -50% this time
#3 JW 2: 140k
#4 Lego: 120k - now that's a nicer hold than last weekend, ca. -25%
#5 Recep Ivedik 5: 110k

And some Thursday actuals (source Blickpunkt:Film):

New Releases:

B&T 4: 38k
Cure: 9.5k → should have around 75k admissions OW according to insidekino.de
Lion: 8.5k → 70k
Bailey/Dog: 3.7k → 37.5k
Boston: 3.5k → 45k

Holdovers:

50SD: 41k - so a bit under the estimate
John Wick 2: 21k
Recep Ivedik 5: 12k

With Monday numbers most of the movies are stable.

Seems like B&T4 opened on par with B&T3 (452k) including previews. But the fourth part has about 20k more admissions from previews. The really good weather hurt this one...

Recep Ivedik 5 is up to 135k (-26%) - seems leggy for a Turkish movie.

La La Land 72,5k (-12%)

Vaiana, as the twelved movie of the last year, crossed 2M admissions with 30k on weekend, down 33%.

Good start for B&T4, excellent drops for Oscars Material and also RecepIdevik5. Among smaller releases, Lion shines with its PTA and should see an excellent hold.

Next weekend: Logan should take the weekend crown, about 400k admissions would be nice. Some smaller releases: Silence; Certain Women, Tour de France, Mal de pierres.

In Austria, Wilde Maus had an excellent hold and was #1 after opening to #2 last weekend – very strong for a domestic release, might even reach a "Golden Ticket", very rare event! B&T4 was only #3, the franchise is not as strong here as in its home market.
