right. this is why last samourai is so exacting. it has managed to cross 100M in US but in Japan as well. US film and 100m in Japan nearly 10 years ago!!!!

US groos of Life of PI is catching up with chinese one. Because theatrical run of LoP in China has eneded, there is very high possibility US gross will catch up. Right now, 85M US, 90M china.

cloud atlas (though not exactle US production), chinese gross up to day, 26,44M - 25 days in release, US gross 27,1M. With 5 days more in release in China, possbile gross fro each day max 50.000, cloud altas chinese gross will no be higher than US gross.

anyway, it is still interesting that cloud atlas, big FX hollywoodlike blockbuster (i know, it is independent production, but so was lord of the rings) is doing better in china than anywhere else.

Pacific Rim (2013)  US Groos (18.8.2013) 98.4M Chinese Gross 103,5M Difference 5.1M.

 

It is second US movie with 100M plus US gross which has grossed more in single other country. Only Last samurai achieved it yet.

I think Gus Van Sant's Elephant, Last Days and Restless, as well as James Gray's Two Lovers, all meet this criteria. They all have bigger box offices in France, and Restless in Brazil and Japan as well.

thanks for addition. there are too many indie US films which made very little in US and managed to made a little more abroad. I must admit I gave up listing such films, i do not have time to check all 500+ movies released in US every year, check if any of them made more somehwere else and check if it is US film.

 

the most important movies which made more in single country are Last Samurai (earning over 100M in Japan 10 years ago and more in Japan than in US, unbelievable) and latest Resident Evil (second best US film in Japan in 2012, bigger than anything else - even than avengers - (ok, apart from les miserables)) . and now there is pacific rim, which will finish over 100M and about 20 percent bigger chinese gross than the US one during a year of hollywood movies decline in china ....

This should really only be for wide releases only, otherwise it's just based on how big of a release it got.
