>Avengers: Age of Ultron surprises over the weekend, with its estimated debut being the biggest opening weekend for a live-action film since Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends from last September, and the biggest opening weekend for an imported live-action film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 from 2011.

The weekend estimate is also 60% greater than the opening weekend of The Avengers, but it's important to note that the original film opened on a Wednesday, so it's difficult to compare them.

Additionally, the weekend estimate gives Ultron the fourth biggest opening weekend for a superhero (Marvel/DC) film of all-time, in admissions as well, behind only the original Spider-Man trilogy.

>Shaun the Sheep Movie also surprised and may have cracked ¥100 million over the weekend. Estimates have its weekend admissions around 80,000, so it'll depend on just how young the film skewed on whether or not it'll open above the mark. The film is only playing on just 145 screens and released through an independent studio, Tohokushinsha, that to my knowledge has never had an opening this high in the past. Talk about a pleasant surprise.

8b yen? Wow! Didn't expect this at all. I thought it would decrease from the first one. The biggest OW for an imported live action movie in 4 years. And it's a superhero movie. Even Spider-Man doesn't make numbers this big anymore. Summer holiday is starting, so even with heavy competitions, I don't think it will get multipliers lower than 5x.

Any Mon or Tues numbers?

looks like TA2 did $750k both days and maybe 800k today. I don't think school is out yet or those numbers would be double. Will break 10m on Friday then it faces completion but will also have school out next week

Disney was very savvy in marketing this as a family focused film - the trailer showcased Clint's family, what's at stake when being a superhero with a family, themes of loyalty, and of course teamwork - all which play great in Japan. It was a great ad campaign which is why I am not so surprised to see the increase. It played to the themes that have made Disney's fairy tale films so successful here.

Japanese like family-themed movies but their birth rate is one of the lowest in the world and it seems to only be getting worse. Kind of a strange contradiction in their culture.

Interesting point. I wonder if the Fukushima plant effected it or has that been a trend for quite some time?

It's a trend that was going on before Fukushima. Mostly has to do with the ridiculously long work hours. No time for relationships or starting a family. Maybe to them, a family-oriented movie is like an escape from their reality in the same way the U.S. audiences love to escape reality with giant robots, dinosaurs, and superheros.
