JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

Any reasons why Ted seems to have a better hold than the rest? Adult demo?

Yup. Older the demo, better the hold. Sunday to wed hold;

1Ted Rated R, Some teens, mostly working adults

2 MI5 PG13 Teens, adults

3 JW Rated PG13 Family Film, widest demo, good mix of teens and adults, a lot of younger teens, not Kiddies though

4 Min For the kids

This, of course was in reverse order when school was out

JW needs 700k for 1B. OS should report a few 100k for the week

Decent post summer holds. Nothing huge that indicates an extended run into fall. Good performances overall.

11 (08) ¥51,229,700 ($431,000), -45%, ¥3,016,778,600 ($24.5 million), Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Toho) Week 6

What a battle at the top of the charts this weekend. Ted 2 manages to rise to the #1 spot in gross, however, Unfair: The End while ranking #3 in gross, actually placed #1 in terms of admissions.

>Ted 2 was denied a #1 debut last week, but pulled ahead of Jurassic World in its second weekend and fended off Unfair: The End to claim first place. The surprise hit sequel sold 211,365 admissions in its second weekend, bringing its 10-day total up to 957,125 admissions.

The solid second weekend is an indication that any negative WOM the film may have certainly isn't affecting its box-office performance so far, and there's a good chance it'll exceed the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone if it keeps up the pace. I highly doubt it'll have the incredible longevity of its predecessor to match/surpass its ¥4.24 billion total, though.

>Jurassic World's reign atop the box-office comes to a close in its fifth weekend, but it continues to post great numbers post the summer box-office season and is still in the running to possibly beat Big Hero 6 to become the highest-grossing film of 2015.

As of its 33rd day in release, the fourth dino outing exceeded 5.2 million admissions, making it the most-attended live-action Hollywood release since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2

>Unfair: The End, the third and final film adaptation in the Unfair TV drama series, may have only debuted in third place in terms of gross, but with 214,198 tickets sold across 328 screens over the weekend, it actually debuted in first place in terms of admissions.

The debut is pretty decent, however, it is 6% lower than its predecessor from 2011. The original film, Unfair: The Movie grossed ¥2.72 billion, and the second film, Unfair: The Answer grossed ¥2.34 billion. The franchise has had decent legs in the past, but a gross just over ¥2 billion is probably as high as the final film will achieve.

>Minions has drastically slowed down now that summer has ended, but its performance continues to be quite remarkable. As I've mentioned (weeks ago), it became the highest-grossing imported non-Disney/Pixar animated film by a considerable margin, and it'll soon reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone

>Piece of Cake rounds out the Top 10 with its debut, selling 36,982 tickets across 158 screens over the weekend. The opening figure itself is poor/mediocre, but considering it's a Toei live-action film playing on under 200 screens, a debut above ¥50 million is okay.

>Attack on Titan - Part 1 finally crossed the ¥3 billion milestone in its sixth week in release, but it got there at a much slower pace than it probably should have. Since it's reached the ¥3 billion mark, it's considered a nice success, but it's at least 25% less than most expectations.

Wait, there's another Unfair movie? Should've known that since the story wasn't exactly concluded in the 2nd movie. I loved the series back in 2006 and the movies were great, with all the plot twists and surprises. They're doing really well despite the long intervals between the movies, especially for a heavily serialized movie franchise.

>Pixels appears to have pulled off the small victory over the weekend, but a debut around ¥200 million is mediocre. This is, I believe, Adam Sandler's biggest opening by a huge margin (and definitely his first #1 debut) since his films always bomb or don't get theatrical releases (common for imported comedies), but this opening is all due to the Pac-Man and his gaming comrades, obviously.

This is Sony's second #1 debut this year, and second highest opener, following Shinjuku Swan.

>Bee of the Sky looks likes it had a fair opening, one that Shochiku is most likely satisfied with having. It'll be tough to reach the ¥1 billion milestone with this opening, but it at least has a chance. Love Live! The School Idol Movie is their only release so far this year to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone.

>Kingsman opened quite well, and gives Kadokawa their second film to debut above ¥100 million this year (after The Maze Runner from earlier this year).

>San Andreas, well, was dumped by Warner Bros.. But a debut well below ¥100 million is still pretty bad, even with the small-scale release.

Just additional info (perhaps you know that, but just point out)

Love Live! The School Idol Movie is already the best gross among Shochiku distributed film since 2010, (Ranked 5th for films aired 2000 onwards).
