June 9-10

Weekend Forecast

Posted Image

1 (NEW) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥325-340 million ($4-4.3 million), Week 1

2 (1) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥285-310 million ($3.5-3.8 million), Week 3

3 (2) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥160-170 million ($2-2.2 million), Week 7

4 (3) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) ¥130-140 million ($1.6-1.8 million), Week 4

5 (NEW) We Bought a Zoo (FOX) ¥95-105 million ($1.2-1.3 million), Week 1

6 (4) The Final Judgement (Nikkatsu) ¥85-90 million ($1-1.1 million), Week 2

7 (5) Girl (Toho) ¥75-80 million ($950,000-$1 million), Week 3

8 (6) Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥65-70 million ($800-850,000), Week 5

9 (7) Black Dawn (TOEI) ¥50-55 million ($600-650,000), Week 2

10 (NEW) Soul Surfer (Disney) ¥40-45 million ($500-550,000), Week 1

Glow of Fireflies will likely open in the same range (300/400 million yen) as God's Medical Record and Flowering Dogwood.

We Bought a Zoo is opening at 316 locations and could break 100 million yen over the weekend. If it fails to reach the mark during the weekend, it's 3-day take (Friday opener) should be able to.

Soul Surfer is opening at only 169 locations this weekend, but should be able to make the Top 10. I doubt it makes 50 million yen, though.

Milestone Watch:

Thermae Romae may exceed 5 billion yen ($62.5 million) and 4 million admissions after 44 days in release.

MIB 3 will exceed 2 billion yen ($25 million) and 1.5 million admissions after 17 days in release. It see around 2.2 billion yen ($27 million) on Sunday.

Dark Shadows may reach 1.5 million admissions giving it about 1.8 billion yen ($23 million) after 23 days.

Updated Weekend Projections

1 (NEW) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥370-380 million ($4.5 million), Week 1

2 (1) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥295-305 million ($3.7 million), Week 3

3 (2) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥175-180 million ($2.3 million), Week 7

4 (3) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) ¥120-125 million ($1.5 million), Week 4

5 (NEW) We Bought a Zoo (FOX) ¥80-85 million ($1 million), Week 1

6 (6) Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥70-75 million ($900,000), Week 5

7 (5) Girl (Toho) ¥65-70 million ($800,000), Week 3

8 (NEW) Soul Surfer (Disney) ¥40-45 million ($500,000), Week 1

9 (7) Black Dawn (TOEI) ¥40-45 million ($500,000), Week 2

No data was available for The Final Judgement, but it should come in around ¥70/80 million in it's second week.

I also have to do some research but if Thermae Romae has a seventh weekend over ¥175 million, not only does that beat HP7's seventh weekend (¥172 million), it could beat Pirates 4's (¥188 million), too, considering Sunday is usually stronger than Saturday. So that would mean it could end up having the biggest seventh weekend since sometime in 2010.

I'm also seeing it possibly spending 12 weeks in the Top 10, and ¥6 billion ($75 million) is becoming more and more likely.

Yep, and a much needed hit for Hollywood which has been struggling something terrible this year. MIB 3 is the first Hollywood release since M:I-4 to cross 2 billion yen. It also appears that MIB 3 is #1 again this weekend despite estimates. It ranked above Glow of Fireflies at three of the four major theater chains.I'll have the Weekend Rankings posted in the morning (or 10 or so hours from this post).
