cannastop
Looks like not that many people have seen Castle of Cagliostro. Which makes sense, because who the fuck knows how to pronounce that, and it's Miyazaki's take on an established Manga/Anime series, Lupin III. It is the movie that got him attention as a filmmaker though.

Difficult to compare them as they are so diverse. Lupin III was the 1st one I saw and it was really entertaining and top notch. My Neighbour Totoro,Porco Rosso, Princess Moononoke, Spirited Away and Howls moving castle also deserve special mention. Wow. When exactly did you see Lupin III? That's an interesting way to get into Miyazaki, even if it's how the world got to know him. I don't really know how diverse his work is though. There are obvious similarities in all his films. Its a gorgeous looking film and it has a magnificent score, but overall its a huge mess. I haven't seen Howl's Moving Castle, but that's how I feel about Nausicaa. Also I think Nausicaa is kind of boring. I thought I wouldn't like Laputa: Castle in the Sky because I didn't like Nausicaa, but that turned out to be dead wrong. cannastop
@Plain Old Tele Do you remember which Ghibli (or Ghibli adjacent) movies you've seen? Akira itself has lots of overlap with Ghibli, actually. Edited July 29, 2019 by cannastop

The movie that alienated fans of the franchise but showed film-making flex. The Last Jedi of its day. Actually I don't know how much that movie alienated fans of Lupin III, but I just heard that it's not a big fan favorite for fans of the series. cannastop
Lol. Miyazaki has made three movies with "Castle" in the title. Also, I think only one of his movies doesn't have flying in it? Princess Mononoke?
peludo
I have seen 10 films of him (I am trying to see all of them). I could rank those 10 films as follows: Spirited Away (A+) Princess Mononoke (A+) My neighbour Totoro (A+) Castle in the sky (A) Ponyo (A) Kiki's delivery service (A-) Porco Rosso (A-) Howl's moving castle (A-) Nausicaä in the valley of the wind (B+) The wind rises (B+) IMO, Spirited Away is the best animated film ever. And it is among my 10 favorite films (and maybe in top 5). It is an absolute masterpiece. Mononoke is epic. And probably, the most adult Miyazaki's film. It is thrilling. Talking about children oriented films, both Totoro and Ponyo are magical. If I had seen it being a child I would probably see both over and over again. I had Pixar as the best studio of animation, but I discovered Ghibli some years ago and I think it is already a step over. I love Pixar, but Ghibli is really special. And Miyazaki is Ghibli's soul.
titanic2187
Spirited Away is the best animated ever, it is so spiritual-satisfying. 2nd will be My neighbor totoro 3rd will be Princess Mononoke The worst for me is the wind rises. In fact, each movies of his after SA is worse than the last. Still good through just SA and PM set the bar way too high for even Miyaozaki to compete

CoolioD1
finally saw his first three movies because they're covering him on the blank check podcast. nausicaa i wasn't really a fan of, sort of a duller trial run for princess mononoke. castle in the sky mostly great but loses me a little towards the end. castle of cagliostro RULES. 1
