zackzack
Anyway, John Carter WW number (285M) seems out of reach. JC exploded in Russia and China (74M from the two). TLR may not reach half of that. JC is not as bad as some say it is. But that number from China & Russia is mind-boggling. Always thought China dislike all this scifi thought-provoking stuff

Goffe
It's a western and I have feeling that Disney will give up of any marketing for this after disastrous OW US. Here, they already dumped TLR, opened with only 3 showtimes in my cinema, MU is 3 weeks old and still have 3 showtimes for example.

Didn't somebody tell Disney not to spend so much on a Western? Open it in the Spring, they could do a nice RANGO number or even a GIJOE1 number. I even like Verbinski style in PIRATES 2/3. I think it boils down to interest. He has no interest in this movie. Is this Depp passion project? Tower
Westerns simply flop. Disney wont listen. Django didn't, True Grit didn't, this isn't a problem with westerns it's a problem with Lone Ranger specifically.
tomknf
Django didn't, True Grit didn't, this isn't a problem with westerns it's a problem with Lone Ranger specifically. Django is a Tarantino film first and foremost. True Grit was a remake of a well known western, was released in December, had tons of Oscar buzz, was released in the Bermuda triangle that was the fall/winter of 2010 (where a movie like Black Swan made over 100m) and wasn't a complete crap-fest like TLR is. And it still only made 80m OS.

Tarantino isn't a big draw by himself,Django was his biggest film both DOM and OS. The lone ranger is also a remake of a well known western. What we are left with is quality which is definitely true, Lone Ranger would have done better if it were a better film.

And it still only made 80m OS. TRUE GRIT appeals to a different audience, older more thoughtful & has patience for story unfolding deliberately. LONE RANGER is sold as an action movie, populated by younger audience and most of them don't care for Western. The older audience see it as loud, garish, and too liberal (Johnny Depp, an Injun as the more heroic of the two). They lost both demographics in US, and Western is the most American-specific genre in H'wood, so it is not a big surprise the movie didn't play so well overseas when audience are expecting a wisecracking flying man with thunderbolt coming out of his hands.
