The A-list, high profile, erotic (or just lots of nudity) film is making a comeback

Recommended Posts

In the 80's and 90's it seemed that the erotic thriller was maybe not omnipotent, but it was certainly a noticeable player at the local cineplex. From films like Body Heat, Body Double, Wild Things, Fatal Attraction and of course Basic Instinct, erotic thrillers were decent films that made money. Basic Instinct made a star out of Sharon Stone and it paid writer Joe Eszterhas a then record 3 million for his script. The erotic thriller was alive and well. Then, for reasons unknown to me, or just that I don't feel like looking up, the erotic thriller, or the movie with the sex scene with full nudity, seemed to disappear. You had the occasional stab at it with films like Eyes Wide Shut and Unfaithful but none of them really made an impression. That's not to say that they didn't do a fair bit of business or that they weren't good movies. But they failed to really ignite any kind of renewed interest in the genre. Now here we are in 2012 and with TIFF just a week away, there are three films that are either erotic thrillers or films with sex and nudity in them all playing at the festival and all of them with A-listers or close to it.First you have Paperboy. This is a film starring Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, Mathew McConauhey and Zac Efron. From what I have read of it, it is an erotic thriller where Kidman plays a trailer trash kind of woman, who has her "Basic Instinct interrogation scene moment in the film." There is a rumoured urinating scene on one another and Efron might even get nude in this one.Next you have On The Road Road starring our adulteress Twilight vixen Kristen Stewart, plus Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, flavour of the month Garrett Hedlund and Viggo Mortensen. There is a well publicized sex scene in the film that becomes a threesome with Stewart and Hedlund getting buck naked. I can only hope Dunst is part of this as well. Now this isn't an erotic thriller, but it does feature, from what I have read, copious amounts of nudity with actors that you are very familiar with. Johnny Depp was once attached to this as well. This will play at Tiff and it played at Cannes as well. Finally you have Brian DePalma gettin back to being Brian DePalma with his new film coming out in early 2013 called Passion. It stars goody two-shoes Rachel McAdams and the Dragon girl, Noomi Rapace. This one is rumoured to have lesbian sex, bondage, BDSM and murder. It is also rumoured to shed McAdams image as she is involved in all of the above. Is nudity making a comeback? Has the erotic thrilled reared it's beautiful head once more for good? Are any of these films going to be successful? No one knows, but imho, it is good to see people take these kinds of risks again. Can't wait to see them.

A couple of those movies may not even end up being wide releases.

On The Road has been bought and Passion and Paperboy have big budgets with name actors. They will be distributed for sure.

Someone get Adrian Lyne out of his apparent retirement. Let him show 'em how it's done.

He made Unfaithful, and that was excellent. Diane Lane is one of my all time crushes so seeing her get it on was quite nice. :)

There was Shame too, of course, but that was the opposite of erotic. Lars Von Triers Nymphomaniac will also depict real sex but, again, probably not what the thread is referring to!

Was Shame filled with nudity?

The thing is, with Internet, you have access to more pr0n/filth than 20 sexshops from the 80's/90's under your finger tips. With Internet, a 12 year already knows what is a bukkake.Gotta love the Intrawebz.

Yeah, but porn today sucks (no pun intended) in terms of story and characters. I mean if Hollywood could churn out some erotic films that actually have decent stories, plots, acting, and charaters it might be worth the effort. Specially if they can get high profile actors/actresses involved.
