For me, I have to separate original film characters from film characters based on literary/stage/comic source material.

Among the latter, Bond is certainly one of the most iconic film characters created via adaptation, but iconic and best are two very different things. I've come across a good number of adapted characters who are better depicted, portrayed, etc.

Well, he's no where near the best movie character ever. He's incredibly two dimensional and far too restricted to be the best movie character ever. It's compulsory for him to have gadgets, say the same lines in every outing, drink the same drink (made the same way), use the sam gun etc etc.I can see why people would put him into the conversation, simply because he's had a lot of movies made with that character, but that doesn't mean that character is very good. It's the villains, stunts, and action that makes the Bond movies good, not really Bond himself, and especially not because he's a good character (perhaps people like Bond because he's a poster image of an impossibly perfect male, but his character actually stinks).

Yes, Best. Like the Most. That is what I think. And like I said in my first Post. Talking Top 5 or 10. And another reason. Look at how many sequels go lower and lower in box office. Well, how many Bond films have we had over time. 30ish? And the upcoming Bond movie is still one of the most anticipated of the year. That has a lot to do with the Bond James Bond character.

Bond movies are not sequels. That, in my opinion, is one of the factors that have made them become popular year on year, because people do not expect the same actor to reprise their role. Bond movies are the same every time one is released. He does the same things, same gadgets, same girls, same quotes, it's nothing special, but people like it, and that has nothing to do with his persona (character).....but he does happen to be the main character in this franchise that is full of explosions and thriller/action plots, and people love that.

Sorry. I disagree. I think people like the character of James Bond.. or there wouldn't still be some much interest. And yes they aren't sequels but they are connections through the James Bond character doing his thing. Just like Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and even say the upcoming Alex Cross and others.

Actually You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and Diamonds are Forever do form a trilogy because they're centered around the same core foundation, carry on plot points film to film, and acknowledge events in the previous film (for example Diamonds are Forever acknowledges the murder of Bond's wife in the previous film which is why Bond is obsessed with finding and killing Blofeld).

Ok, didn't know that. But on the whole, they are not sequels. Right?

Correct, generally they are standalone films that have some characters and organizations recurring (like SPECTRE in every Bond film through Diamonds are Forever except Goldfinger, Felix Leiter, etc).Quantum is a sequel to Casino Royale because it continues and expands the storyline from the previous film.

James Bond is a great character in the sense that both men and women can idolize him. Men want to be him, and Women want to be with him.

James Bond is a shit character in that he has seen very little character development over 40+ years.

Just depends on your POV.

Can't improve much when he is perfect to start with or do you want to lose some of his great traits > James Bond is a great character in the sense that both men and women can idolize him. Men want to be him, and Women want to be with him.

Also per the above he does different things, uses different gadgets but usually uses the same classic lines. But Arnold used I'll be back a lot. So big deal.

But Arnold wore different clothes, drank different drinks, used different guns, said many other catchphrases, appeared in other films. Totally not the same. Now back to the real issue with your statement: You're comparing a real person to a fictional person.
