Resident Evil is a "buy-out film" 买断片, right? Anyone in the forums here happen to know which company bought the rights and is distributing in China?

Yep, the production company will only get $7M plus some bonus if the movie break out big(50% of revenue of the amount over 500M yuan gross).

7M is very expensive for a buy-out movie, Your Name was bought for only 19M yuan($2.75M).

So they get half of 25% above 500m?

RE running at 8.5m per hour. 200m/$29m+ likely. Sat PS pacing to 50m+. 10-20% bump likely for tomorrow. 600m/$87m~ OW possible. Near 800m by Thursday.

I don't see Logan on Maoyan next weekend as someone mentioned. Only lego and  Dog at a paltry 10k and 20k in PS.

Even with a 70% drop next weekend(without Logan) it'll reach 1B by the following Tuesday.

Edit: RE blowing the f*** up. running at 10m per hour.

@fmpro you're right. It's gonna do 120m on OD.........by 1430  :locked::D

If it makes 1B.

 the company will get $7M+ 500M yuan *22-28%(according to their contracts)*0.5

Yup and thanx.  Did 12m from 5-6pm and 14m from 6-7pm. It's a monster. Going to clear 210m.

Sat PS pacing to 52m. Assuming it does 5x, 260m possible. 660m/$97m for the weekend.

I couldn't be more happy now, didn't see that coming (I think no one did). If only US was that crazy for this.

Shows how important the release date and marketing is in China.

If it was released 1 week later with Logan, it might have gotten killed (or the other way round since Logan's title in Chinese is more like Wolverine 3 : Battle to the death instead of Wolverine: The Final Chapter, haha).

Heard from some insiders that Resident Evil trailers were shown infront of most showings of xXx since 2 weeks back when official release date was announced, the distributor wanted to show that they have a similar popcorn product to ease the Chinese's cravings... and xXx had almost 2 full weeks of run which it diminishes all competition and most movie-goers already watched it and needed something fresh. And with that "Final Chapter" title - BAM!

At some point in the future, box office fans are going to look at the Chinese market, and scratch their heads at Resident Evil being the 5th biggest debut in the country... That feat just sounds impossible.

I imagine someone is on the phone to Paul Anderson and Mila Jovovitch saying "Hey, can we book you a flight to do one last Resident Evil film with Donnie Yen?"

Edit: WHAT IS UP WITH THE REVIEW SCORES? Do the Chinese really like the movie THAT much, or is it 1st-day inflation?
